Chapter Four

Chapter Four
Five minutes later found Sakura and Naruto walking down the eerily silent streets of Konoha. Naruto was now dressed in a similar outfit he wore to the Third Hokage’s funeral. He was still trying to adjust some of the clothing because he had been forced from his house almost as soon as he had put the outfit on, due to Sakura.

Both teammates were quiet, neither wanting to talk about what they were going to. Naruto had a plethora of thoughts flying through his head and the more he lingered on certain thoughts, the more confused he became.

The first time he saw Sasuke…was that a dream too? Had he fallen asleep in the tree? It has happened before, so it was possible, he supposed.

He knew that the dream he had had some truth in it; there was no way he could think up something as bizarre as that. It had felt so real, all of it. A light blush spread across his whiskered cheeks as he thought on a particular moment in the ‘dream.’

Why did those feelings surface now? Now, when Sasuke was gone?

Wait, Naruto thought. If his odd dream was anything to go by, then Sasuke was in fact, still alive. He was just having some spiritual problems, thanks to Orochimaru. And if Sasuke’s body was buried, then Orochimaru’s plan would succeed. And if that happened, the snake bastard would be stronger than before!

“I’ll meet you there, Sakura!” Naruto shouted hurriedly and darted off towards the Hokage Tower. He needed to see Tsunade and warn her.

Concentrating chakra to his feet allowed him to cross the village in a matter of minutes. He came to a stop when he reached the building, barging in and demanding an audience with Tsunade.

“What is it, Naruto?” Tsunade demanded once Naruto reached the office. She was dressed in a simple black kimono, obviously on her way to the funeral as well. “We don’t have much time, you know.”

“I know that, but this is serious, old hag,” Naruto said with a cheerful smile.

The older woman looked at him with brief confusion in her eyes. Wasn’t it just last night that Naruto was depressed and sulky? How could his mood change so rapidly, especially seeing as how the funeral was today? She was almost afraid to ask, “What’s wrong, brat?”

“Sasuke’s not dead.”

Tsunade stared. The blond teen stared back. Hazel eyes bored into blue. One, replaying the previous three seconds in their mind; the other smiling brightly, waiting for the first to respond.

“Come again?” She wanted to be sure she wasn’t hearing things. And if she weren’t, how could Naruto joke about something as serious as this? On second thought, “How could you joke about something like this?!” She had to know what was going on inside the teenager’s mind. Had his grief consumed him? No, that couldn’t be it…

“Sasuke isn’t dead, Tsunade! I’m not joking, I’d swear my life on it.”

Knock, knock.

“What is it,” Tsunade demanded as someone stuck their head inside, peeking into the room.

“Lady Tsunade, the people are all waiting for the funeral to begin.”

“I’ll be there, just give me five minutes.”

“Yes, Lady Tsunade.”

With that, the person exited the room, shutting the door behind them. Tension was thick in the room. It was a whole minute before either blonde spoke, the elder speaking first, “Alright, spill it Naruto. What did Kakashi give you?”

If Kakashi had given her Naruto drugs, she’d kill him. That was the only logical thing entering her mind right now. That was the only thing that made sense. Drugs could addle someone’s thoughts like this.

“I haven’t even seen him lately, old hag. Now listen, Sasuke’s life is in serious danger.”

“Naruto—”

“Let me explain!”

The next two minutes consisted of Naruto informing Tsunade everything that had happened between last night and this morning. Well, almost everything. He did leave the make-out session out of his report. When he was finished, Tsunade had a doubtful look on her face.

“You say it was a dream, Naruto? How is anyone supposed to believe that? It was a dream.” Tsunade crossed her arms over her large chest.

“I know, but it all fits! I mean, if Sasuke really isn’t dead, and is just a wandering soul, how would anyone actually be able to see him while they’re awake? We can’t see ghosts, you know. That means he would have to enter someone’s dreams. Or possess them. That’s the only way the undead can make contact with the living.”

“You’ve got a point there, Naruto.”

“Of course there’s a point! I’m right!”

Dropping her arms to her side and sighing, Tsunade said, “I’ll take your word for it, Naruto, but what do you propose we do? It’s not like we have solid proof that Sasuke is alive—”

“—which he is—”

“—and we can’t just cancel the funeral.”

“You’re right. Cancelling it would only alert Orochimaru. He’s more than likely got spies posted everywhere. We have to let the funeral go on,” Naruto concluded, an idea forming in his mind.

Tsunade, seeing the glint in his eyes, asked, “What is it you’ve got planned, Naruto?”

“We’re going to switch the body.”

It amazed her how intelligent Naruto had become. From the loud-mouthed, annoying brat to the loud-mouthed, annoying—but smart—young man. He really had changed in the last three years, training with Jiraiya.

Tsunade smiled as she left her office and made her way to the funeral. Naruto had gone on ahead, intending to switch the body while putting up a genjutsu. Sure, he wasn’t the best at it, but really all he needed was to trick the attendants for a couple minutes while he traded out the body.

Meanwhile, she had enlightened Shizune of what had happened and her assistant would meet up with Naruto to store Sasuke’s body in a safe place.

The Hokage reached her destination, spotting Naruto near the front of the crowd. With her arrival now known, everyone turned to look at her. She caught Naruto’s eyes and he flashed her a brief smile along with a thumbs-up before placing a grieving look on his features again. Everything had worked out. Tsunade returned the smile and the funeral proceeded.

Naruto, Shizune, and she had come to the obvious decision of not alerting anyone else to the fact of Sasuke’s possible life, keeping everything secret. They would bury the fake body where they buried all the other deceased ninja, giving him an honorable service.

With a sad smile, Tsunade stepped forward to begin the funeral.

A/N: So...long time no see? I'm really sorry about that. I'm not even going to bother with excuses because I know you don't want to hear them. I'm just going to apologize for the ridiculously long wait. So, if no one wants to review because I have been a douche, I'll understand.
