Chapter Five
Chapter Five
She ushered him down the hallway, fussing over the bow on his obi and tutting about how his hair should have been cleaner or how the young master might not like it down. Sasuke grunted in response, walking faster, wanting to get this over and done with. Hopefully, once the Hyuuga laid eyes on him, he’d be thrown out. Surely Neji would be able to see through this damn jutsu! He was a genius ninja as well, even if he was somewhat less smart than Sasuke himself. But Uchiha pride wouldn’t let him just dispel it. That would be admitting to defeat and the fact that he’d let it all run out of his control. And Uchiha never, ever lost control. Especially not where anyone else could see them.
His will wavered slightly when the lady pulled him up short outside a door, her hands patting him down again and making sure everything was just right. She still fussed over his hair, horrified that he’d wanted it down this time. He’d angrily insisted, unsure why he felt so vehement about it. She’d slyly countered that if he wore the kimono she picked out he could have his hair however he liked. After some small argument they’d settled. She could pick the kimono but only from a certain few, while he could wear his hair down but only with decorative combs either side of his ears. In Hyuuga colours, of course.
So, it was dressed in the inevitable white and gold, hair trailing down his back in a silken sheet, hands clasped modestly in front of him, that Sasuke knelt gracefully to the floor as the woman opened the screen.
The soft voices talking inside ceased as the woman calmly announced his presence.
“Hyuuga-sama. Neji-sama. Please let me introduce…ah…” She quickly cut her eyes at Sasuke, realizing she’d never asked for a name.
“Uchi-…” He stopped short, realizing his mistake. “Uchina Sa…Satoko” He hissed, closing his eyes in embarrassment immediately after. What a ridiculous name. Surely he could have come up with something better, given time.
The lady repeated it and Sasuke bowed afterwards, his prestigious clan manners coming in handy for once.
He heard a shuffle of cloth as both men turned to face him, the twisting in the pit of his stomach rose when no one spoke. Surely Neji would leap to his feet in a fit of outrage, that the Uchiha should sully something so sacred and seeped in tradition as his marriage formality with his obvious prank.
But nothing was said. No shouting ensued.
Hiashi’s voice came softly, no doubt trying to calm the tense girl in front of him.
“Satoko-san. Raise your head please.” An undercurrent of irritation rode in his voice, as if he expected the willful woman he had seen earlier and not this somewhat wilting flower he saw now.
‘If I can make him think he’s made the wrong decision, I can get out of this…’ So he played the part and kept his head lowered.
Suddenly, Sasuke froze, his pulse quickening, as he heard the other occupant of the room, obviously Neji, stand almost soundlessly and pad over to where he was sitting. A lightly callused finger caught him under his chin and tipped his face up.
He glared into pale orbs as the edge of Neji’s mouth quirked up in an expression the Uchiha had never seen on him before. This wasn’t the superior smirk that was handed out left, right and center to those that were considered ‘beneath him’. No, this was almost a smile, his eyes imparting something to Sasuke that he hadn’t seen in a long time.
Affection.
Neji’s hand slid up his cheek, cupping his jaw, bending to whisper to him softly.
“Now…that wasn’t so hard, was it?”
Sasuke angrily jerked his face from Neji’s touch, his eyes flaring as Neji’s smile widened. He stood slowly and walked back to the low table that Hiashi was sitting at, sipping tea.
“I see what you mean, Uncle. She has a fire in her.” He said conversationally as he sat and reached for his cup. “She will make an interesting partner and hopefully bear strong children. I accept her.”
“Hey!” Sasuke’s mouth was open before he even realized he was speaking. “Don’t talk about me like I’m not here! I’m not beneath you, damn Hyuuga!” His mouth shut with an audible snap as he struggled to get himself under control. Neji arched a calm eyebrow and set his tea on the table, mirrored by his uncle.
“She does, however, need some discipline.” Hiashi stated coolly.
Neji nodded his agreement and they turned back to each other to discuss the wedding date, ignoring the frail girl shaking with anger by the door.
His mouth opened again before a wrinkled hand slapped across it and dragged him back out the door. The screen slid shut and Sasuke turned to see his dresser shaking her head sadly.
“The young master likes a challenge, dear…”
Sasuke glared at her, wordless.
“…and sorry if you wanted to get out of this, but I think you’ve just given him one.”

Neji sat, long after his uncle had gone, the tea cooling in his cup. His pale eyes stared off into the distance, unseeing as he leisurely browsed over every detail he could recall of the young girl picked to be his wife.
A small smile crossed his lips as he remembered the flash of spirit in her eyes, the way she had jerked her face away from his touch, preventing his fingers from further exploring the silky soft flesh he’d felt under his hand.
His fingertips itched, and he absently rubbed them against the fine wood of the tabletop, wondering why, when he’d felt such an instant attraction to this girl, he’d never seen her before and yet she seemed so familiar.
So very familiar…
