Same Moon
As Sasuke stared as his own reflection, Naruto shifted his weight, causing the ruffling and crunching of the grass to break the silence first. He walked over to Sasuke slowly, reaching down to put his hand on his best friend’s shoulder. “Sasuke, I…”, he began to speak, but Sasuke jerked away.
“I don’t care.” Naruto blinked a bit, parting his lips to speak again, but Sasuke responded as if he already knew what Naruto was going to say. “I don’t care”, Sasuke repeated, moving to stand up and took a step away from Naruto, looking at him coldly. “Whatever it is you’re about to explain to me, I don’t care. I don’t care how, why, when, or anything else you’re about to say.” Naruto pressed his lips together, looking at Sasuke firmly, then sighed, giving a nod. “Alright. Fine, but why…” The blond was cut off again with Sasuke’s cold, harsh tone. “That’s none of your business.”
Naruto’s eyebrows twitched as his lips pressed together again. He looked away, scratching the back of his head as he tried to think of something else to say. “…You come back, make me come out here, but won’t tell me anything…Mn, you haven’t changed at all, have ya?” Naruto laughed, obviously irritated. Sasuke just huffed, crossing his arms as he looked over the lake. There was another round of silence as Naruto watched Sasuke. His blue eyes examined this friend from head to toe, taking note of everything about Sasuke’s body that had changed. He was taller, his hair longer, his muscles more defined, but most noticeably were his eyes. The eyes that use to change between serious and playful now looked as if he hardly slept at all, as if he had been up all night crying for the entire time they were separated. Naruto gave Sasuke as sympathetic look, knowing what that was like.
Sasuke looked at Naruto from the corners of his eyes, noticing that he was being stared at, but more so that Naruto was looking at him with such sadness. “What?” Sasuke snapped, but that only made Naruto snicker. “Your hair. It’s gotten longer.” Sasuke raised an eyebrow, dropping his guard for a moment as the comment threw him off. “What?” he asked again, not really sure what the hell Naruto was going on about. Naruto walked up to him, tugging at the left end of Sasuke’s long bangs. “It’s gotten longer here, and here too”, he smiled, managing to run his fingers through the long back spikes of Sasuke’s black hair. Sasuke stumbled a step back, more embarrassed then anything, slapping Naruto’s hand away. “Don’t touch me so freely!” scolded the ninja, but at least this time he didn’t pull out a weapon. Sasuke’s reaction only made Naruto smile more, and he put up his hands, giving up. “Okay, Okay…”, he sighed, keeping his smile on his face. He looked up at the sky as the sun finally set, giving the moon space to rise, leaving it’s reflection on the lake.
Sasuke looked up as well, pressing his lips together, then spoke on his own accord. “It’s the same moon.”
“Same moon?” Naruto asked, but if finally dawned on him that it was the same as from when they fought in the very place that night. “…Oh…Yeah, yeah it is…”, he nodded, then looked back down at Sasuke. “Sasuke….” Sasuke had looked down as well, but at the ground this time.
“…You’re going to kill them.”
“What?”
“You’re going to kill them. Everyone in the village.”
“What?! What are you talking about, Sasuke?! I’m not gonna kill anyone!” Naruto protested, grabbing Sasuke’s shoulder to shake him. Sasuke closed his eyes, letting himself be shaken, but when he looked up suddenly, his eyes were their signature red and black.
Since Naruto was looking directly at Sasuke, it didn’t take any effort for Sasuke to absorb Naruto into his world. The pair stood miles above the center of the destroyed village, the ground zero with the tower of dead bodies. Squatting on top was the cause: the fully-awakened form of the nine-tailed Naruto. Both Sasuke’s and Naruto’s appearance had changed to something Sasuke believed was more calming to both of them. The childhood bodies and clothing back from when they first met was secretly a memory Sasuke held dear. As Naruto’s eyes grew wide and tears freely began to flow uncontrollably, Sasuke reached out to take Naruto’s hand. As soon as they touched, the scene changed. They had aged to the teenage years, roughly the age soon after they formed team Kakashi, and were inside of Naruto’s mind in Sasuke’s nightmare. They stood in front of the gate that once held the demon, the paper seal on the ground as the gate doors were wide open. Naruto’s age and clothing finally updated to his current-life as he stared at the doors. His hand was being held tightly by Sasuke, making it easier for Sasuke to pull Naruto’s arm back with the blond tried to move to pick up the seal. “Don’t. You can’t touch anything in here and don’t let go.” Naruto’s body was jerked back and he turned to look at Sasuke. “Why?”
“If you do, you’ll be sucked into this nightmare.”
