Chapter Five: Walking Towards the End

Sakura flipped through scroll after scroll, biting on her bottom lip. Tsunade was wrong, she felt in her gut. This was something much bigger than a simple Jutsu. The jutsu may have been a factor, but it wasn't the issue. Still she was coming up with nothing, no explanation for what was happening.

Sakura glances up at the warded restricted area. Her eyes become serious, she would bet her life what she was looking for was in that room. Standing she walks towards it stopping two feet from the warded door. For Naruto, For Gaara, for them she would do this, she would break the rules and enter the room without permission.

Besides them, her natural curiosity was more powerful than her fear of getting caught and in trouble. Glancing over her shoulder to see if anyone is there she turns back to the door and studies it. If she did it wrong the alarm would go off, and Tsunade would come storming in pissed fists a swinging. If not her then several dozen of her special ANBU would come in and kick her ass.

She tries to imagine how the hell Naruto had done it as a simple genin, correction a simple genin whom couldn’t even do a simple clone jutsu. She snorts, god Naruto had always done the most absurd things, when people least expected it. Still breaking into a highly restricted area, with the wards up was an amazing feat for the kid known as the looser, as the drop out.

Her eyes sadden, as the memories of who absurdly mean she had been to him. So stuck on herself and how awesome Sasuke had been. Naruto had loved her for everything she was, would have given her everything on a silver platter if she but asked. Yet now, he lay unconscious in bed unable to do anything, and it was all up to her.

Right, she says concentrating pulling her hands up to gather chakra with her eyes closed. Sakura jumps when someone enters and she quickly turns toward a pile of scrolls she’s already gone through, pretending that she had no intention what so ever to... oh it's Sasuke.

"What do you want?" She asks him bringing her hands up to her waist.

He looks away from her, off to the side feigning disinterest. "What can I do to help?"

She stares at him then smiles. "You know how to undo a ward without getting caught?"

He looks off to the door he just came through and then back at her as if she's stupid.

"Yeah." he drawls.

"Good." She all but purrs a smirk coming over her features. “Get to it genius boy.”
Sasuke looks to the warded door behind her, then back at her before a small smile rises to his lips.

“This’ll be easy.” He tells her stepping up to it.

“Yeah yeah, I get it everything for Sasuke is easy.” She jibes receiving a glare.

Somebody had to tease him since Naruto was no longer present to do so, she thinks looking off in the other direction. Besides, she’s matured and moved on from her childish infatuation of him. If Sasuke is interested he can work for it this time.

She watches as he traces over the door frame, his eyes activated, trying to see what he’s dealing with. It’s one back up ward after another, and the only way to get rid of it is to get rid of them all at once. He stands back thinking over his options. It had to be simple, even if they had changed it up a bit since Naruto had gotten in at twelve.

“Well? I thought it was going to be easy.” Sakura comments.

Sasuke shoots her another glare over his shoulder, “Shut the hell up and I’ll be able to do it.”

“I can talk if I want to.” She replies childishly, okay so not all her immaturity had left her.

Sasuke snorts and his fingers fly through the signs to turn himself into someone else. Suddenly he’s Tsunade and Sakura blinks.

“How is that supposed to work?” She chides him.

He ignores her and in a puff of smoke he’s gone, the next she knows the door is opening from the inside. Standing there is Sasuke himself once more, smirking triumphantly at her. Sakura looks around expecting people to barge in at any moment. There is just no way that it could be that simple.

“It’s not,” he answers her reading her expressions like an open book. “I just wanted to fuck with you.”

Sakura’s mouth falls open and she blinks a few times surprised to hear such a thing from Sasuke. Then her face darkens into a frown, Sasuke really was a bastard. Clenching her hand into a fist she hits Sasuke for his trouble, but no where near as hard as she would have if it were Naruto.

“Ass.” She says walking past him and picking up a few scrolls. “Well get some yourself I’m not doing this alone.”

The man nods and reaches for some himself, “So how are we going to do this?”
“We go through each one of them.” She answers. “ Meticulously so, and then if it doesn’t give us any answers we put it in a done pile.”

“What are we looking for?” He asks.

“Anything that has to do with Naruto and his family. I figure eventually one of these scrolls will shed some light on this problem.”

“Hm.”

The door opens and shuts again and the two occupants freeze as if deer caught in the headlights. They turn to see Sai standing there uncertain if he should be there.

“Yeah?” Sakura calls out to him.

“I want to get into trouble with you as well, if it would help Naruto out.” He says to them.

Sasuke and Sakura look at each other as slowly smiles start to spread on their faces. Soon they are laughing quietly at Sai’s oddness and the way he so bluntly said that out loud for all to hear. Sai blinks at the two, unsure of what is so funny about anything and he frowns a little.

“Yeah Sai, might as well join in, being a part of Team Seven and all.” Sasuke says sitting down in a corner and opening a scroll.

Sai smiles slightly at the notion that even the Uchiha considers him apart of team seven even with his return. Sakura smiles at Sai holding out a scroll for him.

“Well get started misfit, we have a lot of ground to cover.”

Sai nods taking the scroll and walks over to the window sill to keep watch at the same time he looks over the scroll. Finally finding her seat at the desk she opens the scroll carefully and starts to read over it. She can already tell that it’s going to take awhile to get through this and find anything of use. But her heart feels a little lighter as she looks up over at the other two men who are here to help. Naruto may be slowly fading away, but Team Seven was still alive, well, and kicking.

Hold on Naruto, we’ll figure it out.

*********

“It just isn’t making any sense anymore ya know?” Sam confides to his therapist.

Sarah takes a deep breath in a little bit at a loss as to what to tell her patient. The original diagnosis, multiple personality disorder and acute schizophrenia didn’t seem to be matching up anymore. She had always thought it odd that Doctor Jamison had given that as the reason for Sam break down. It always seemed to her that yes, the schizophrenia could fit and the meds seemed to work, but the multiple personality disorder did not. She sighed looking over at Sam who looked absolutely defeated. It was possibly time to give him a new diagnosis.

"Well,” She began. “ Maybe your characters are based on people you've met or once meant something to you."

Sam’s brows knit into a frown. "You guys said that I completely made them up."

She nods fiddling with her pen between her two hands. "That is still true to a point, but what you've just told me makes me wonder if maybe, just maybe, you've built characters from people you've known before."

Sam stares at her as if she grew a horn on her head and Sarah sighs. She figured Sam wasn’t going to understand or even except that a point value. She would have to explain some of the finer details to him. Hopefully he’s understand then.

"Sam, sometimes people have impacts on our lives, but we brush them off as if they are nothing. Simply put, through your subconscious guilt you've made them into people that have been endeared to you. You indeed made them up, but they‘re based on people that you have met or seen before."

Sam nodded, okay that made some sort of sense. Sasuke could have easily been him, and his need to change Sasuke was what he had wished to do to himself. Sakura was someone he wanted to protect, to love and to love him back, but she never did. That could have easily been a manifestation of the woman who had started the whole mess. The list could go on, Tsunade the maternal figure, Jiraya his father figure, but he had always put them one step farther away than that.

"Alright,” He said slowly, “what do I do about it?"

Sarah seemed to contemplate what to tell him, she wanted to help him, but there wasn’t a whole that could be done. There was always the new…. She bit her bottom lip. Was that really wise what with Sam tendency to laps in to the make believe? Sarah finds herself torn on what to tell him, and decides that it should be his choice to make.

“There’s this new technique.” She says.

Sam nods, “alright.”

“It’s a machine that can project subconscious images onto a screen.”

Sam’s eye widen at the implications. “Seriously?”

“Yes,” She pauses.

“But?”

“It’s still completely experimental, and the F.D.A. hasn’t approved of it.”

“Then can I even get access to such a thing?” Sam asks.

“Well yes, but as a candidate of experiment.”

“Meaning that I’ll have to sign a bunch of wavers and only after I get approved yes?”

“Right.”

Sam paused and sighs thinking this information over. Things could obviously go wrong, but it could be worth it.

“How does it work?”

"In theory we should be able to send you back to the place you made inside your head. In Theory mind you, we'd be in control of it and I could talk you through it."

Sam stares at her long and hard. "Is it safe to do?"

Her lips thin. "There is a chance you could relapse, that I could loose control over the whole thing. I couldn't tell you that it will work in our favor or against us. but I’d bargain that given what you‘ve told me, that you‘re going to relapse if we don‘t do something drastic."

Sam nods he can feel it himself, something inside him always seemed to be tugging on him. Then there was his strange obsession with the color red.

"Well I guess I don't really have anything to loose then."

She smiles. "I'll call around, try to get you in, with your case I’m sure I’ll get you in in no time. So I'll call you when I find out the date and time."

"Thank you." He says with a half hearted smile.

She nods leaning over to him and placing a hand on his forearm. "If this works Sam, we can start to integrate everything together for you, and then you'll be free."

Free… what did that even mean to him anymore?
