Chapter: Kakashi
His one eye surveyed the land as he stood, hands in pockets, and listened to Sakura fuss over Iruka. The man was down right refusing treatment, which was the norm for the noble shunobi.
“Iruka-sensei if I do not heal your pathways that were damaged there is a large possibility that you will no longer be a ninja.” The pink haired kunoichi stated pushing her green hands back into his body.
Iruka pushed her hands away once more shaking his head. “Then I am no longer a ninja. I don’t really do ninja things anymore anyway.”
Kakashi always found himself amused by the man. Iruka had always put himself below everyone else even as a child. It was slightly strange to think that he’d been an orphan like Naruto and yet so different. The silver haired nin looked over at the scarred man and his bleeding back then at the irritated Sakura.
“I don’t think you understand-”
“Haruno, I said no. There are people far more valuable than I. I am man enough to admit this, now stop fussing over me and move on to someone else.” Iruka reprimanded sternly.
Sakura sighed finally conceding to the older man. Kakashi smiled fondly at the two of them before looking out over the small group of Leaf still left. Most of them were civilians, not a good sign. Madara probably purposefully targeted ninja specifically, less chance of an uprising. Still he was hopeful, not something he was very often, one ninja could make a difference.
Kakashi noticed that Ino was a little shaky and he frowned about to say something to the blond, when he was interrupted by Sakura.
“Kakashi-sensei?”
“Yes?”
“As you know Sai is out there, and possibly others.” She explained looking at him pointedly.
He sighed, it was obvious she wanted him to go back out there and fulfill his ninja duty. She was however very tactful on how she had presented it, guilting him into it was wise.
“I suppose that’s your way of telling your old sensei get the hell out there too hm?” He teased earning a cross frown.
He smiled with his eye and bowed to her getting her to blush, before he leapt off and down the mountain side. Just because disaster was all around didn’t mean he couldn’t have just a wee bit of fun. It was much better than despairing over it all and it might help to keep spirits up.
****
He swiftly landed behind the wielder of ink, not all that surprised the younger man knew it was he who was there. Sai had the uncanny ability to know these things and just go with the flow as if it were normal that people materialized around him. Kakashi was surprised however that Sai was able to combat so many enemies at once and the jutsus he had in his arsenal.
Quickly Kakashi’s hand flew through the seals of the water based jutsu he was about to use and upon calling out the name of it water materialized from the air and went slicing towards the enemy wielding the bugs. He already knew that the bugs were not that good against water techniques and the water quickly shot past them sliding into the man’s chest. Kakashi closed his eyes and said a small prayer for the man, as he knew the family to be of the religious sort.
Kakashi had gone from compound to compound looking for students or older nin that he could utilize to help protect those who had gathered on top of Hokage Mountain. He looked back down at the young man who stood, his scrolls rolling themselves up into his hand. Sai was quite impressive and highly secretive about it too.
“Sakura explained to me the situation.” Kakashi told him as black eyes looked at him.
Sai nodded, sometimes the kid was just as aloof as Sasuke, but other than the hair color the similarities ended there. He was starting to see why Danzou had had Sai under his wing. He looked back at the Hyuuga compound.
“Nobody is alive there.” Sai commented before he could ask.
“Have you found survivors at all?”
“Three, Akamaru, Hinata, and Shino.” Sai answered.
Kakashi looked over at the dead Kiba and frowned under his mask. It was highly unusual to know the two were separated now. His one eye darted back over to Sai who was carefully dusting himself off. The kid was a mess, covered in dried blood and dirt, he even seemed to be favoring his left leg. He looked back at the carnage Sai had left while battling against many foes and a small smile graced his lips.
“Do you know what happened?”
Sai shook his head, “whatever it was Akamaru ended it.”
Kakashi’s visible silver brow rose to his hair line, now that was an interesting piece of information. It was also sad, the two had been like blood brothers to have it end like it had was probably devastating for the pup. Then it occurred to him that the other dogs should still be alive, or maybe not. They would have to go to the Inuzuka area which could be highly problematic as the Akamichi were near by.
“There could be more hounds still alive, hopefully unchanged.” Sai commented turning in that direction.
It was sometimes uncanny how the younger man seemed to always know exactly what he was thinking. Though it probably had more to do with Sai thinking along the same lines. Kakashi watched the kid frown, something Sai didn’t usually do.
“Akamichi live near by.” he murmured.
“Aa, they do indeed.” Kakashi replied slipping his hands into his pocket.
Sai let out a breath of air and appeared to seem as if he was far to put upon for one so young. Kakashi stifled a chuckle, it was good to see the young being themselves even amongst the chaos that was now ensuing. Slowly they started to walk in that direction, Kakashi trying to think of a plan and Sai probably doing the same.
“The Abarame house has been set afire.” Sai commented.
“I saw.”
“Shino did it.”
Kakashi looked over at Sai, “did he tell you?”
“No, but Shino is that kind of person.”
Kakashi thought about it and realized how insightful Sai could be. Shino would indeed set his own house on fire if he felt the need to do so. It only meant that he’d seen something horrific there, Shino would see no other reason to do such a thing. The silver haired nin shook his head, he only wished that these young people could have been spared such pain and loss.
****
Sai’s bird disappeared and he landed softly next to Kakashi, the silver haired nin noted that Sai had landed as if his left side wasn’t hurting. Sai was quite interesting, even though Kakashi knew him to be injured, he refused to let his body show the weakness.
“So?”
“No sign of movement that I could see.” he stated.
Kakashi took in the unsaid ‘but I felt it’ and took a deep breath in slowly letting it out. It was such a long night and it was only half over. He also knew that Konoha was lost and they would not be able to stay here for very long. He looked over the darkened area, the fact that it was so deadly quiet, and dark gave him chills.
“They’re out there,” Sai whispered.
Indeed.
“I’m not sure we should do this.” Sai breathed.
The thought had occurred to him as well, for all looks and purposes this section of the village was gone. Still what if someone was hiding in there, what if someone was being raped, or worse? As much as he was loath to go in he couldn’t just turn his back either, he being a ninja sworn to protect and all. He looked at Sai and knew the kid also felt the same. It still amazed him how much affect Naruto had on people.
“You ready for this?”
“Not really.” Sai answered back pronouncing each letter.
Kakashi leapt off the building and before hitting the ground he disappeared in a swirl of leaves. Appearing a few blocks down from Sai he looked back behind him to see the younger man disappearing between the shadows of two buildings. Landing quietly on the dirt he immediately froze as the feeling of being watched hit him square between the shoulders.
Jumping in the air while his hands flipped through the seals he pulled his mask down to throw fire at the beast. Landing deftly he turned pulling out a kunai as yet another animal attacked and slammed it into the chest of the large wolf. He looked over his shoulder as the last cries of the burning dog was yowled into the night air.
He sighed, as he was so hoping to have other dogs on there side. A growl came from behind, a warning of sorts and he slowly turned with his hands in the air. The large husky sniffed the air before nodding its head at him. The silver haired nin took a long look at the female and noted she was heavily wounded. Judging by the color of the coat under all the blood, he was looking at the dame who had given birth to Akamaru.
Behind her an equally large male came up to stand beside her, he too having sustained large injuries. Kakashi frowned, they would not last much longer judging by the way they looked and panted. He closed his eyes and went through the summoning seals to summon his dog companion.
“Oy,” the pug greeted.
“Could you ask them what the hell happened?” He said nodding towards the two huskies.
His companion walked over and sat in front of them bowing his head in respect. Kakashi kept look out while the three grumbled and quietly barked through their conversation. He was always thankful that he had decided dogs would be his summoning animal, it made things far easier.
The dogs stopped and all on queue including himself turned to look to the right. Kakashi’s eye narrowed as a large hulking body came into view. The dogs growled low in their throats and backed into the shadows disappearing once more.
“Hm, smart dogs.” He commented.
“Yes, and you are not.” the pug complained.
“What did you find out?” Kakashi asked.
“Nothing good,” The pug stopped as the large shadowy figure turned in their direction. “Possibly could we do this on the go?”
Kakashi nodded and the two jumped out of the way as the man turned into a ball and came barreling down the street at them. Kakashi and Paku landed on the roof and took off running back towards Hokage Mountain.
“Nobody is left alive. The moon eyes rose and everything went quite.”
“Like everywhere else.”
“Yes, other than when all the screaming happened it didn’t happen here.”
“What did then?”
“Some of the family slinked off as if dazed and confused, others began ripping at each other.”
“Kiba must have been one to slink off.”
“They said that it became a war of dominance and those who lost were raped and or killed.”
Kakashi winced, he did not want to picture that.
“Upon seeing the carnage, they did what any honorable dog left in their right minds would do and had told Akamaru to make sure that he took care of the problem while they stayed to take care of theirs.”
“Why are only some of the pack unaffected?”
“Younger pups who haven’t seen much battle, or those not as well trained fell victim to the eyes.”
“All the Inuzuka were effected?”
“Every last one of them.”
“Damn. Any still around and about?”
Paku paused, when the pug did that it was never a good thing. “Some where out on missions.”
“Fuck.”
“You said it.”
The building before them exploded with dust as another body slammed into it and the two skidded to a halt. Kakashi pulled up his forehead protector, he couldn’t control them, but he had other techniques that could help.
“Go tell Sakura and Iruka that no Inuzuka for any reason is to be trusted. Kill them on site.”
“Of coarse.”
Kakashi watched the dog run and leap taking off to the rendezvous point before he turned his eyes to the task at hand. About to do a serious jutsu he was surprised to see a green clad man fly threw the air and connect his foot into the large body sending it flying backwards. Lee landed on the ground gracefully and gave him a thumbs up.
Kakashi waved at him with his fingers and then the kid was gone in a flash only to appear in front of the man slamming a devastating punch to the gut blood spilling from the Akamichi’s mouth. The silver haired nin chuckled and pulled down his headband once more. Better to save it just in case. He noted, that Gai was nowhere to be seen, and the two were always together.
Leaping into the fray as the first Akamichi came barreling into the road Kakashi landed beside the green monster of Konoha.
“Kakashi-sensei good to see you are well.”
“Dido.”
Hopefully wherever the ink wielder was, he was safe or at the very least winning.
