First Day

Kakashi was having a lovely dream. He was lying with his head in Sasuke’s lap while Sasuke caressed his forehead, brushing his hair back again and again. It was so peaceful. Then Sasuke whispered his name. Kakashi hummed in contentment.

Then Sasuke yelled his name.

Kakashi woke up with a massive headache. Sasuke was sitting on the edge of the bed. Kakashi groaned.

“What time is it?” Kakashi asked.

“Noon.”

Kakashi jolted upright. This was his first full day as Hokage, and he was ungodly late.

Sasuke put a hand on his chest and pushed him down. “I’ve been running interference. I sent Shizune off on tasks to keep her off your back. Now, take this pill for your hangover, drink this entire glass of water, take a shower, and by then I will have a meal ready for you. Then you can saunter in late like you always do.”

“Sasuke—”

“When Naruto becomes Hokage, I will suggest he celebrate the night before the ceremony to avoid this situation.”

“Thank you.”

Sasuke smiled and stood up. “All the toiletries are mine. I’ll move your stuff today and tomorrow. Tomorrow night, you can find everything I missed.”

“I really don’t deserve you.”

“No, you don’t.” He smirked as he left Kakashi to get up.

-----

Kakashi arrived at his office horribly late.

“Maa, maa,” he waved at Shizune sporting his rainbow eyed smile, “I helped an old woman carry her baggage up a hill.”

She just glared at him.

“Sasuke’s the one who let me sleep too late,” he defended.

“That, I believe,” Shizune said. “When I came to find you, he just gave me your robe and told me to take it back to the seamstress to finish.”

Kakashi laughed uncomfortably, his smile greatly exaggerated.

“Gomen,” he said. “I won’t be this late again. Hangover.”

And thus, he started his reign as Hokage.

-----

Kakashi was haggard when he returned home that evening. Shizune was a slave driver. How he missed ANBU right about now.

“I’m home,” he muttered.

“Welcome back,” Sasuke responded from the sofa.

Kakashi walked in a few feet then stopped.

Sofa?!

He looked around. “We have furniture?” The house was practically barren when he left in the morning.

“Of course. You didn’t have that much stuff and I shanghaied Naruto into helping me move your four pieces of furniture. Since I had his help, I dragged him to a furniture store to buy a few other things.”

Kakashi sighed and sagged. “I feel like you’re doing all the work. You covered for me this morning, you moved my stuff, and you bought furniture.”

“I also stocked the kitchen and made dinner.”

“You’re making me feel worse.”

Sasuke smiled softly at him. “You’re Hokage now. You will be stuck working in that office. You’ll stay late and hardly have days off. You’re not running halfway across the continent or fighting fifty rogue shinobi, but you’ll be working long hours. I don’t want to interfere with your work or your position.”

You won’t interfere. I won’t be able to spend as much time with you as I want. I want this job less and less.”

“I’m proud of you, sensei. I know you’ll be a better Hokage than Saratobi.”

Kakashi sagged again. “Don’t raise your expectations so high.”

“High? I think they’re quite low. Bastard let we three orphans live completely alone, let Danzo do what he wanted, let the wedge grow between my clan and the village, and more. I think he was a lousy Hokage. He projected the image of everyone’s grandfather, but in my eyes, he was a failure. As long as a whole clan isn’t wiped out on your watch, you’ll be a far better Hokage than him.”

Kakashi gave him a sad smile, though it was hidden behind his mask. Sasuke was correct on all counts, but Kakashi still respected Saratobi. He’d done what he felt was best, but Sasuke was right.

“Get cleaned up,” Sasuke said as he stood. “Dinner is prepped, just needs to be cooked. It will only take a few minutes.”

Kakashi intercepted Sasuke on his way to the kitchen. He pulled the younger man into a kiss. “I love you. I will be better.”

“I expect no less.”

-----

Kakashi was only five minutes late the next morning. Shizune had a look of absolute shock.

“Eh? Something the matter?” he asked Shizune.

“You’re early?”

“Eh? I’m five minutes late.”

“I didn’t expect you for a while.”

“You have an exaggerated opinion of me.”

“Gomen.”

“So, let’s get the urgent business out of the way first. I don’t want to be here past six.”

“Hai!”

His first day was rough, but he was motivated to make his lover proud.
