Chp 6: Just for tonight…
Sakura stared at her reflection in the mirror, giving her long hair one last satisfactory brush before turning her back on the glass, bending down to put on the comfortable sandals she had put out to wear for her date tonight. Not that she was prepared to call it a date. She merely needed some time away from her thoughts of Kakashi. Besides, this was Sasuke. He had never been interested in her and she had given up on him. It had just been a girlish crush. And tonight was just a dinner at Ichiraku, between friends. She was dressed simply in a white shirt and standard black ninja pants. She was ready.
She locked her apartment door behind her as she left for Ichiraku. She now lived in her own apartment after her parent’s death two years ago on a dangerous mission. She couldn’t bear to live in the family home without them. At least they had spent their last moments together…She liked to think that. Her steps soon found herself outside Ichiraku. But then her apartment was not too far away from the establishment. She entered, greeting the jovial hosts behind the counter, her eyes soon resting on Sasuke’s dark head. He was early. He looked up at her and in a rare show of affection, he smiled. She was startled but managed to hide it behind a smile of her own. It must have been all the practice in dealing with so many shocks recently. She gingerly sat on the stool next to Sasuke’s. For once, she was at a loss of words. Usually, she couldn’t stop gushing to, and often about, the onyx-eyed guy but ever since that dream…….And besides, she was rather curious to see how the eternally morose Sasuke would start the night. She was also quite looking forward to seeing him come out of his shell.
“So…,” he began. He wasn’t used to this. But he was prepared for something new. He was nervous but he was also quite looking forward to this. He smiled again. This was quite nice. “I hope you don’t mind that I ordered for you….," he said gruffly, “miso ramen. Naruto’s favourite” His eyes lifted to meet hers tentatively and he took a chance. He decided that at least for this one night, no matter how out of character it was for him, he would reach out to another. He would allow himself to be vulnerable, to have fun, to think about something other than the massacre of his family and killing the brother who had perpetrated it. Just for tonight, if the only time, he would allow Sakura to get to know him. To enjoy himself in her company. Something about her brought out the best in him. Even at his most serious, he had always known that Sakura was the one female able to reach him. Maybe it was how much she had always cared for him…He wondered if she still did.
Sakura laughed. “Thank you. It’s a good thing Naruto has Hinata to cook for him every night! If not, he might very well be here, finishing my ramen for me!” Sasuke laughed. It was unfamiliar. Sakura was still not used to these rare displays from Sasuke but the night seemed to promise more to come so it was probably in her best interests to get used to them now! She came here to avoid any more confusing thoughts after all…”Enjoy your meal!,” the host said, plonking down two steaming bowls of miso ramen in front of the both of them, interrupting their joyous camaraderie. They started eating their delicious fare, relishing the tantalizing textures and flavours that were a treat for their palates and hungry stomachs. Sasuke was enjoying himself. He turned towards Sakura. He had never realized how much pleasure it brought, watching a person you cared about enjoying themselves in your company. And he knew that he did care about Sakura. He had long accepted that as he mulled over his thoughts and feelings in the shower before coming here. “It must be nice having a girlfriend…,”Sasuke said with a slight smile, “Naruto seems to be very happy.” “He sure is! He can’t talk about anything else but her and her cooking!,” Sakura replied, laughing light-heartedly. She was glad Naruto was finding happiness in his life. “They do say that the way to a man’s heart is through his stomach, wouldn’t you say?,” she winked at the onyx-eyed guy next to her.
He stared at her intently in return. She felt a bit wary of his gaze but shrugged any uncomfortable feelings aside. She was here to enjoy herself and Sasuke was a friend, nothing more. Tonight, he appeared to consider her as one openly and she didn’t want to jeapordize that. He was one of the important people in her life. Sasuke started, “Well, when two people love each other, I imagine that they’d love everything about each other, no matter what the circumstances. Of course, a guy wouldn’t mind having the woman he loves cook her way to his heart everyday. That would be pretty nice.” He returned her wink. She may not be used to a wise and joking Sasuke, but she was enjoying his company. She laughed with him. He stared at her again. “How would a guy win your heart? Would he have to cook his way there?,” he asked quietly, with just the merest teasing inflection colouring his tone. The air felt heavy. It was like a loaded question. But she shrugged off any idea of it being so. This was probably just how Sasuke was when he opened up…
Sakura laughingly humoured him. She closed her eyes, smiling. “Well…he’d have to be nice of course. Treat me right. Strong. Romantic. And he has to love me very very much…,” she sighed. “Of course, it wouldn’t hurt if he was really handsome and sexy as well!,” she finished, laughing and blushing at the same time. Sasuke smiled. “Would you say I’m handsome?,” he teasingly asked her. “You don’t need me to give you the answer that a thousand of your fan girls could gladly confirm for you,” she said mischievously. He laughed at that but he registered a slight pang of hurt. Had her feelings for him totally gone? She didn’t appear to be the least bit fazed as she said that. Maybe her feelings for him had truly gone away. Maybe he had chased it away all these years, with his gruff and serious exterior and flippant comments. Now, when he rather enjoyed reciprocating her feelings, he was loathe to believe that she was lost to him. She was his wasn’t she? This time, the thought didn’t quite ring as true as he had cockily thought only that morning.
