Under the Enemy's Roof
chapter vi
----------------------------------------------------------
To say that Itachi creeped Naruto out would have been an understatement. The older Uchiha freaked the younger boy out to the point that he was actually docile and meek compared to his usual bubbly and fiesty state. There was something innately wrong about the older man that set off security alarms and sparking neon lights in the blonde's head. It wasn't a good sign to say the least.
"So," started the blonde nervously, trying to break the silence, "you're...Sasuke's brother, right?"
He stared at the rear view mirror and shuddered as a pair of onxy eyes glance up at him through the same mirror.
"Yes," came the flat reply. Naruto expected the eerie silence to fall back into place after the laconic answer until Itachi continued. "It's nice to see you again, Naruto-kun, or, as you referred to yourself as when you were two, Naru-chan."
The blonde sputtered incoherently at this new shred of information about his childhood as he turned into a marketable shade of lobster. An odd shiver ran down his spine as Itachi chuckled at the teen's reaction.
"Don't worry," soothed the Uchiha, "I won't tell Sasuke."
"Shut up!" exploded the blonde in embarrassment, "I bet that isn't true anyway! I don't remember you from when I was little!"
He watched as the pair of black eyes glanced up at him again from the rear view mirror, studying and recording.
"That's because I was sent away to a private bording school by the time you were four," answered the Uchiha smoothly, not missing a beat, "You probably don't remember me, but I looked after you a couple of nights when your parents were out. I was also there to...observe you."
This stunned the blonde as he simply gawked at the man before him.
"As my mother already told you, you were born with a condition. I was often there to collect data on your behavioral patterns. They picked me to do it because children often act differently when they're around adults." Itachi paused as he turned a corner. "But I can't say that you weren't amusing to be around either."
Naruto heaved an exasperated sigh.
"What the hell is this condition that everyone keeps talking about?" shrieked the boy as his hands flew up in the air in frustration.
The brunette paused for a moment before saying, "It's..."
Naruto lurched as the took a sharp corner and the Uchiha brought the sleek car to a quick halt accompanied by the screech of the wheels.
"Nothing."
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
"And what do you like to eat, Naruto-kun?" asked Ms. Uchiha sweetly as she refilled her husband's ricebowl. Naruto looked up from his spot next to Sasuke, surprised that he was being addressed by his host family. Although they made little indication that he was unwelcomed, it was quite obvious that the Uchiha household was one of those families that still held the idea that children should be seen and not heard. The blond glanced up at the head of the Uchiha household and mentally made a face at the middle-aged man. Dinner was one of those occasions where everyone listened interestedly in the utter success of his day as a multi-billionare. "You don't seem to enjoy vegetables..."
The woman trailed off, frowned, and added, "...or onigiri."
Although it was true that Naruto absolutely hated vegetables, he didn't personally feel that onigiri was all that bad, except for the fact that Sasuke seemed to love them. Unfortunately for the blonde, that automatically meant that, in his book, he needed to hate them and avoid them like the plague. It was also unfortunate that the Uchihas loved to dote on their children and there was never, ever, a shortage of the food in the house. They had onigiri for afternoon snacks, onigiri during weekend lunches, and they always had one in the bento boxes that Ms. Uchiha packed.
"Erm," started Naruto abashedly. "I like ramen."
The entire table stared at him.
Naruto scowled underneath. Apparently Uchihas were too rich to eat ramen.
"You mean...those chemically-treated noodles?" asked Itachi, frowning. Although the elder Uchiha son had eaten them like any respectable citizen of Japan, he found absolutely nothing appealing about them. He tended to stay away from them, like most people, since they consisted of absolutely no nutrients. In fact, he might have vaguely remembered writing an essay against the widespread consumption of packaged ramen due to possible harmful side effects of the packaging process.
The blonde grimaced, they did sound sort of gross if you put it like that.
"Tch. What else did you expect out of a dobe?" scoffed Sasuke from behind his cup. His mother and brother frowned at him from across the table. Naruto bristled.
"T-teme!" exploded the boy as he finally cracked from the insult. He was tired of Sasuke and his own-all attitude, tired of him putting down his parents, and tired of him calling him dead last. He hadn't ever done anything to the brunette, well, nothing permanently traumatizing, at least. "Y-yeah we were poor, I'll admit it! We weren't rich like you guys, and we couldn't afford to eat sushi and onigiri everyday, but we were still happy! Just because you're more wealthy than us doesn't mean that you can just push us around! We've got our pride too!"
Naruto was rambling, but he didn't care. Everything was narrowing down to all of the hurt and abuse of the past years. He didn't care if he was screaming at his 'brother' in front of his foster parents. he didn't care if he was on the verge of tears. He didn't care if he was directly calling them snobs.
Suddenly, a spark of pain stopped him mid-rant as he clutched his chest in pain. It was only then that he remembered that he hadn't taken his medication that morning when he rushed off to school, almost late. He winced as the pain spiralled through his body. It felt like he was being pulled some place deep down within himself, somewhere far, far away. He was losing control and he could feel it.
The last thing he remembered before he passed out was a million voices shouting all at once. An old and seasoned one shouting for something in the basement. A shrill and feminine one chatising someone. A strong and stoic commanding the chaos. And finally, a firm and concerned one asking if he was okay.
Strong arms surrounded him as he was lifted from his spot on the floor and hoisted into unconconsciousness.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
Scolding voices permeated Naruto's hazy slumber as the world began swirling into place.
"Really, Sasuke, you should know better than to excite him, especially since he's still weak from his previous attack." There was a clatter of metal beside him.
"Tch. It's not my fault if he's easily excitable, plus, he's the one who forgot to take his medication."
"Still, Sasuke, you should try to make peace with Naruto-kun, especially since he's going to be part of our family now. You ought to think of him as a brother! Plus, he's younger than you!"
Naruto could practically hear the teen sulking at that.
"Only by a few months!"
A sigh resounded through the air as he felt a cool cloth on his forehead.
"Still! Younger is younger! Plus, he's sick! You could at least have the decency to give some consideration for his wellbeing."
"Tch."
Naruto rolled his eyes beneath his eyelids. However, as much as he was irritated by the other boy, he couldn't pass up the opportunity to listen in to his rival being told off by his own mother.
"And, until Naruto-kun gets better, you are grounded."
"Not as if I have anywhere to be anyway."
"And, you are going to help take care of Naruto-kun."
Silence.
"You can start by picking up some ramen at the store."
The blonde smirked contently into his blanket. Ramen and a pissed off Sasuke, what could be better? However, before he could rejoice, a violent cough ripped its way through his throat. Unable to hide his conscious state, blue eyes eased open slowly to find the face of his foster mother and rival peering anxiously at him.
"Ah, you're awake, Naruto-kun!" exclaimed the woman warmly. "I'm going to go get some tea for you, Sasuke, you watch over him." Sending her son a warning glare, she skirted off down the stairs to prepare some chilled green tea for her charge.
Naruto pointedly ignored Sasuke.
"Oi," started Sasuke after a long silence. The older boy looked down at his feet, suddenly heating to a soft pink. "Look, I'm sorry for before. I didn't mean what I said. I just...lost my head, okay?"
The blonde huffed, obviously not appeased by the vague apology. "What did you lose your head about? Just because I was talking to Gaara and Neji doesn't mean I'm going to sell out your family secrets! I don't even KNOW any of your family secrets!"
"I know that, baka!" snapped Sasuke, clearly irritated by the cheeky response. "I just..."
The rest was lost in a mumble.
"Huh?" Naruto asked, clearly not hearing.
Sasuke mumbled it again under his breath.
"What?" the blonde asked again, losing his patience.
The Uchiha mumbled something incoherently again.
"JUST TELL ME ALREADY!" shouted the teen, finally snapping.
A silence lingered between the two of them, one not-so happily waiting for the other to respond and the other wondering what to do. Then, deciding that it was better to simply show the other instead of explain it, Sasuke leaned down and landed a chaste peck on the other boy's slightly-parted lips. It was a very short affair, much like a kiss goodnight, and fleeting too. Yet, in that kiss conveyed softness and friendship and the blossoming of a childlike crush. Naruto merely gaped.
"I brought tea!" called Sasuke's mother merrily as she came into the room holding a tray of iced tea. Sasuke excused himself to buy Naruto his ramen as he slipped out silently through the door, leaving a shocked Naruto to drink a good pitcher-worth of cold tea.
