Secret, Inevitable Love

Sasuke glanced at Kakashi as he ate his eggs and bacon, and he noticed a worried look on the older man’s face. “Is something wrong Kakashi, you look a bit… distracted.” Kakashi looked up from his food and put his arm behind his head “Sorry guess I’m just a bit sleepy.” Sasuke knew there was more to it, but he left it alone. He smiled at his friend next to him choking on his eggs from swallowing it whole rather than chewing. Sasuke slapped his friend back. And they both smiled at each other.

Damn the Uchiha’s and their observation skills. His teammate Obito was always the one to point out the minor details that told a whole other story.

He remembered their last mission to the land of waves. He and Obito were sent to retrieve a missing-nin. At first they had searched the hospitals since they were informed that the ninja was injured. They passed by a couple who sat outside. A man spoke to a woman, “Sweetie what are we going to do, our baby was just diagnosed with Albers-Schonberg disease.” The woman sobbed uncontrollably. “It’ll be ok sweetheart, we just have to pray.”

Upon exiting the building Kakashi said “That was pointless, that form of inherited disease is deadly, found within a child might I add, has a ninety eight percent chance of death.” Obito looked forward and held a space off look that Kakashi had grown accustomed to. The look almost seemed practice. “You know Kakashi, the masses have never thirsted for truth. They turn aside from evidence that is not to their taste, preferring to deify error, if error seduces them. Whoever can supply them with illusions is easily their master; whoever attempts to destroy their illusions is always their victim.” Kakashi stopped and stared at his friend in amazement, but Obito merely smiled brightly. “Come on let’s go.”

They found his hideout after a lot of searching, but had only found a lady inside, the place held a strong chakra residue. They lady denied knowing his whereabouts, but she had not looked directly at either of them. Obito noticed this and further questioned the lady, while Kakashi had thought that perhaps the lady had known nothing. After five minutes the location of the missing-nin was revealed. Later that night back at Konoha, Obito had explained how she had always averted a direct gaze and so she was unconsciously telling them that she was lying. Obito was indeed a wise man.

“Goodbye Dad!!!” Kakashi snapped out from his flashback. “Good bye Kakashi.” He waved the two boys off, and started clearing the table.

Noon had come all too soon, and he was standing in front of the Hokage. “Kakashi how are you and your son getting along.”

“Master Hokage, I’m sure you summoned me for more then indulging in my personal life.” The Hokage nodded “You are correct Kakashi.”

He looked calmly at Kakashi. “It has been two months since you have taken any B rank missions. I had agreed earlier to give you a pardon from any high risk duties for a few weeks. And now I need you for a special assignment. We have received word that sand village has found the Hero Water. I will send you and your team to retrieve it.”

“When are we to leave?”

“Tonight.” The Hokage’s voice held a tone of finality.

Kakashi bowed and left the office. ‘Damn. I need to find someone to take care to Naruto. I know Itachi left on a mission, and Sasuke’s parents aren’t too fond of visitors. I’ll need to think of something.’

Kakashi continued to jump over the rooftops until he reached his sons school. He watched the schoolyard full of children going home with their parents. By the time he reached the gates it was only Naruto Sasuke and Iruka.

‘Wait a minute, Iruka’.

“Iruka, may I have a word with you please.” Kakashi approached Iruka. The chunin blushed as he usually did when Kakashi addressed him. “Sure, Kakashi.”

“I was wondering if you wouldn’t mind taking care of Naruto for me for about four days. The Hokage needs me for an urgent matter.” Naruto looked up in surprise at that. “I’m needed for a mission into the sand village, I hope you’ll understand.”

Naruto was shaking uncontrollably from his memories of the sand villages attack. He saw his mothers body fall to the floor.

“Kakashi No!!!! Please don’t leave me, please…you can’t go, you’ll die if they catch you.”

Kakashi hugged his son to him. “Don’t worry Naruto, I’m a highly skilled ninja, I can handle it. I promised you that I wouldn’t leave you ok. So just trust me, nothings gonna happen.” He said this with all the confidence he could muster, but at the same time he was worried.

The sand village was probably expecting a raid soon. He knew it wouldn’t be easy.

Iruka squeezed Kakashi’s shoulder, “No need to worry, I’ll take care of the boy.” Kakashi saw Sasuke kicking the dirt. “

I know this is a little too much to ask but I will be willing to pay you of course, but you know Sasuke is just like a member of my family. He usually stays at our house on most nights unless Itachi is home. So I was wondering…” Kakashi was thinking that maybe he was pushing his luck too much. Iruka spoke up “Hey Sasuke, would you like to keep Naruto company, I’m not sure I’ll be much entertainment to him at all.” Sasuke immediately went over to Naruto and hugged his waist “Don’t worry Iruka sensei, me and Naruto will take care of ourselves, you just worry about the ramen.” Iruka questioned “ramen?”

Naruto was still looking very sad, but then he looked up again and held a serious face, “Dad I’m trusting you, please come home to me…don’t leave me.” Kakashi hugged his son to him in a strong embrace.

“You have my word.” with that he kissed his sons head.

Iruka was touched by the display in front of him, he was instantly drawn into the closeness the father and son shared. Sasuke then walked and hugged Kakashi too “ We’ll be thinking of you.” Kakashi patted Sasuke’s head. After a moment Kakashi spoke up “Well then let’s get your stuff from the house and take it over to Iruka’s place.”

Iruka gave Kakashi directions to his house and the four parted on their separate ways.
“Rin, Obito.” Kakashi acknowledged his two teammates. “It’s been a while since we’ve gone on a mission as a team.” Obito nodded. ”I agree.” The three headed to the sand village using the night to shadow them.

“Thanks for having us over Iruka sensei.” Naruto said as cheerfully as he could, but his worry was still very evident. Sasuke hugged his friend “Don’t worry Naruto, it’ll be ok, he promised.” Naruto nodded.

Kakashi, Obito, and Rin we’re going head to head with the ninja of sand village. They had retrieved the elixir, but were caught on there way out. Kakashi made a break for the exit and he and Obito we’re close to the gates.

“Rin…Where’s Rin?” Obito yelled.

“We have the elixir let’s just go.”

Obito stared in disbelief “No.”

“Obito, we have to follow the rules, get the elixir and return with it at once.”

“Ninja who don’t follow the rules are dirt, but a ninja who abandons his friends are lower than dirt.” Obito turned and headed towards Rin, Kakashi was soon to follow.

They had come to her aid as she was being attacked by the remaining two ninjas. They had taken out one of them, but due to Kakashi’s lack of recent B missions, he had lost some of his natural awareness. He didn’t see the trap that was set, and soon two kunai knives were headed for his heart. Obito had noticed the trap earlier but figured Kakashi would dodge it.


There was a knock on Iruka’s door.

“Iruka, is Naruto Hatake here with you?”

“Yes he is, what is this about.”

The man stuttered “I…I’m afraid we have some bad news. We found a body on the border, during one of our patrols. And Kakashi’s ID and tag was laid upon it…I’m very sorry.”

Iruka didn’t know what to do.

“No…No…No!!!” Iruka turned and saw Naruto clutching onto Sasuke’s arm. “He promised, Kakashi never lies to me, he’s gonna come back, you’re wrong…that wasn’t him…It can’t be…It just…can’t be.” Naruto ran out the window and Sasuke followed him.

“Naruto wait!!!” Iruka yelled before he ran to catch up with them. Tears were dripping down his face as he ran. And Sasuke’s heart was wrenched as well. ‘why, why do bad things happen to good people’.

Naruto fell from a tree branch and landed on his face, but he felt defeated, so he just leaned against the tree and cried freely. “Dad…you promised…just like my mom did…why do people always lie to me.” “Naruto…Naruto it’s me Sasuke.” Sasuke had been shaking Naruto but the blonde hadn’t noticed the vigorous shakings. “Please Naruto listen…don’t cry please don’t. I know how you feel…Kakashi meant a lot to me as well…but please.” “I…I didn’t even get to tell him I love him. Sasuke…promise…promise me you won’t leave me, and don’t lie like everyone else…please, stay at my side.”

“Naruto…you will always have me here okay.” The two boys shared a tight embrace.

They heard footsteps approaching them. “Naruto…Sasuke…what are you two doing out here so late…and where’s Iruka?”

The two looked up to see Kakashi staring down at them. Naruto was deadly shocked to say the least…he promptly passed out as his senses were being fully overloaded at that moment. Sasuke stared up in horror and surprise

“Is it…really you?”

“Well who else would it be? What happened to Naruto, Sasuke?”

“We were told that you died, and Naruto had run out here crying.” Sasuke said nervously

Kakashi knew he couldn’t even begin to feel what the boy was feeling. He carried Naruto and Sasuke into his arms and carried the boys back to Iruka’s house, he was sure the chunin was also extremely worried about the boys. Kakashi began to think back to the sand village.

Obito had jumped in front of the kunai that were aimed for Kakashi’s heart. Ands before he knew what happened Obito was laying on the ground clutching his heart. In a fury of anger Kakashi had punched the last ninja skull and had effectively dislodged the head from it’s body.

“Obito…no obito.”

“Kakashi I want you to have something before I pass on. I know that during our chunin exams you had lost your left eye. So I would like to pass on my sharingan eye to you, that way…you can always remember me.”

Obito clutched his heart. “Rin please, please assist with the transfer.” Rin had failed to mention that she had only enough chakra to sustain her life force. But she looked at the two, and saw how they risked her life for her. So without a second thought she used the remains of her chakra to transfer Obito’s last wish onto Kakashi. Obito was now rendered lifeless. Kakashi began to cry freely in his companions presence, but he soon felt another life force vanishing.

“Rin…no Rin, what have you done.”

“Take care of yourself Kakashi, I will always watch out for you. And take care of your son.” With her last ounce of life she formed a smile on her face.

Kakashi knew it was dangerous to stay where he was at, so he carried his two friends lifeless bodies to the border of his country. He lay them on the ground and said a prayer, he removed his tag and Id and laid it on top of their bodies. ’Obito, Rin, I’m very sorry for how I acted. Never again shall anyone on my team be abandoned for the sake of completing a mission…I’m sorry.’

He set up a camp not to far away so that he could recover. He was in such a deep sleep that he failed to notice the patrol that was searching for illegal immigrants trying to enter their country. A group of four ninjas had found Kakashi’s ID tag and immediately departed to notify their Hokage of the perhaps failed mission. They assumed the third member had died within the sand village.

Naruto awoke from his sleep with Kakashi’s head rested on his chest, and Sasuke to his right. “DAD!!!.” the two jumped in surprise. Kakashi looked at the fear and confusion in Naruto’s eyes.

“Dad…is it really you?”

Kakashi nodded. He had explained to both Sasuke and Iruka, and now he began to explain to Naruto about the incident.

Tears were forming on Kakashi eyes as he told the story. Naruto hugged him as he felt his dad’s pain.

“I’m sorry dad.” He was sad about his father’s friends, but he was relieved that his father was still alive. He suddenly felt really guilty.

Kakashi looked at his soon “It’s ok to feel happy that I’m alive son. I can’t imagine dying while knowing you weren’t taken care of, I don’t think I’d be able to rest in peace at all. Please don’t feel guilty for how you feel, it’s not bad. Okay son.” Naruto hugged him tightly. Kakashi always seemed to know what to say. “you kept your promise dad.” Kakashi held his son back “I’ll always be here for you son.” Sasuke smiled at his friend and Kakashi. Iruka was grinning at the two. It never ceased to amaze him at how close the two of them were.

Come morning kakashi explained the incident to Master Hokage and handed the elixir over.

The bond between the boys and Kakashi was constantly growing. But even the strongest bonds can be broken if a single strand were to fall.
