Kankuro knew that he was being followed, but that didn’t mean that he was going to stop. In fact, he increased his speed as he walked through the vast garden and towards the entrance to the estate. A split second later, his pursuer increased his speed to match Kankuro, not only revealing that he was a competent shinobi, but that he was a competent shinobi that wasn’t giving up. Kankuro played this game for a few minutes more, increasing his speed every once in a while and hoping that whoever was following him was getting the hint.
He wasn’t.
The puppeteer sighed as he slowed to a stop once inside the estate and leaned against the wall in the corridor, waiting for whoever felt like they had the right to bother him at the moment.
Rounding the corner with his hands in his pockets, a leaf shinobi strode looking generally disinterested. It almost looked as if he were about to pass Kankuro up but stopped next him, gaze not faltering from the length of the hall.
“What do you want?” Kankuro hissed. He had enough of being bothered today. It was only around three in the afternoon but a nap was starting to sound really good.
“There aren’t any of those stupid fan girls around to be annoying right now, so I want to know something. No other ears, just you and me. What the hell is your problem?” Kiba answered, not even offering Kankuro a glance.
“There is no problem. Fuck off,” Kankuro stated simply, quirking a painted eyebrow.
“If there wasn’t a problem, you wouldn’t be telling me to fuck off. Now what is it?” Kiba was still staring down the hallway.
The sound of giggling could be heard just down the hall. Lifting himself off of the wall, he cleared his throat and looked around.
“Not here.” Kankuro looked hesitantly down the hallway while Kiba nodded in agreement. He followed the puppet master, not exactly knowing where they were going (he wasn’t paying attention to Temari during the tour).
Kankuro fiddled with the dials and switches on a walkie talkie he had pulled from his pocket for a moment, switching it to channel five. They stopped by his room to dump the heavy puppets he had been dragging along with him the entire time. As he did so, Kiba could hear kitchen noises through the walkie; chopping, sizzling, foul language, the works.
“I need someone to deliver hot sake and tea to the breakfast parlor-” Kankuro said through the microphone he glanced at Kiba, “Would you like anything in particular?”
At that exact moment, Akamaru rounded the corner and barked loudly, pleased to find owner after an amount of sniffing him out.
“Heh,” Kiba laughed as he ran his fingers through his hair. “I guess Akamaru will be joining us, so a nice dog treat or something for him. And how about some dango? I have a particular affinity for dango and plum tea.”
“Make that plum tea. And we would like some dango and a dog treat as well.”
“A dog treat?” a voice crackle through the speaker. Kankuro scowled.
“I don’t pay you to ask questions.”
“Yes sir. I was out of place sir.” With a click, the conversation was over and the walkie talkie was put away.
They walked in silence to the breakfast parlor. Kiba took in the physical signs of tension Kankuro was displaying. He absent-mindedly rubbed his temple occasionally, his shoulders were so tense they were almost pinched, and his posture was off. He wondered if it was really the relationship his brother was in that upset him so much.
They entered the room, tea and sake not ready just yet. Kankuro made his way towards the window seat and gestured that Kiba should join him. The dog nin approached and gingerly took a seat next to Kankuro, but far enough away to respect the other’s space.
And there was silence. For a while, the two just gazed thoughtfully out the window. Akamaru yawned loudly from the spot he took on the floor. Kiba chuckled and leaned over to pat the dog on the head.
“Your refreshments, Kankuro-sama,” a servant girl said with a bow and proceeded to wheel in a cart loaded with more goods that Kankuro remembered requesting.
“The chef has prepared a few things for dinner tonight he thought you’d appreciated with your tea,” the servant said. Kiba’s eyes lit up as the rested on half a honey sweetened almond bread loaf.
Kankuro glanced first at Kiba, then the cart. “Tell them it is much appreciated. Leave the coffee cake, almond bread, and the fresh fruit along with that heavy whipped cream I like.”
"Gee, you think that would be enough," Kiba’s words dripped with sarcasm as he raised his eyebrow. Kankuro didn’t pick up on it.
“Why, is there anything else you might like?”
“…no, I’m fine.”
“Very well then, that’s it,” he said as he bowed to the servant girl who blushed and bowed deeper and left the room gracefully.
Akamaru had been presented with a large tray of last nights leftover meat, which he sampled before barking happily.
They started with a warm shot of sake that was desperately needed to relax a few nerves to lift the heavy tension in the room. Neither knew why the other was so nervous about conversating. Kiba lifted his glass to toast.
“You spoil us, Kankuro-sama.” With that, the two sour shots were downed quickly. Kiba coughed at the taste.
“That burned all the way down! Well, now to the good part,” Kiba said as he started in on the strawberries and cream. He lifted the tea cup to his lips to wash down the taste.
“It’s funny…” Kankuro said staring down into the cup of tea he was now holding. His reflection flickered as the liquid rippled.
“What is?” Kiba asked, strawberry half lifted to his lips.
“Just hearing a leaf shinobi call me -sama. After all you guys have done for us, I feel I should be calling you all -sama,” Kankuro said before carefully sipping his hot tea.
“Well it’s not like you haven’t made up for it-”
“See, that’s just it! I don’t think I would have been so kind as to let Konoha make up for anything if it had done what we did to them.”
Kiba smiled brilliantly. “Well, just be glad we didn’t and for Kami’s sake, don’t call me Kiba-sama.”
“Likewise, goofball.” They both laughed mutually as the mood lightened in the room.
“So what exactly has been bugging you?” Kankuro picked at his coffee cake thoughtfully.
“Can I trust you?” he asked.
“Tell you what. Lets make a deal. We’ve been on a roll so far. You know, you save my life, I save yours. Now you tell me a what’s bugging you and I’ll tell you what’s bothering me. That way we will both have some leverage.”
“Sounds good enough for me,” Kankuro agreed and they pinky sweared.
“I’m jealous of my brother,” he stated simply. Kiba spewed the tea he was sipping on in the air.
“You mean you are into Naruto!?” Kiba shouted, no doubt loud enough for everyone in estate to hear.
Kankuro jumped to defense. “No, no! It isn’t like that!”
“What is it then?” Kiba asked calming down.
“Its just… I’ve never been in a relationship before. It never seemed so bad. I was always busy, I was fine with focusing on my training. I never really thought of girls or whatever. But seeing my little brother, my baby brother… and how happy he is… it made me realize that I’m missing out on something.” he grumbled.
Kiba blinked. “Well that doesn’t seem so bad. I mean, come on. How old are you?”
“18.”
“Yeah, you have plenty of time to find someone. I’m kind of in the same boat. I’m 16 and I haven’t been in a relationship. Ever since I’ve become a chuunin, my family has been pushing me to settle down with someone.”
“Well, 16 definately doesn't sound to bad,” Kankuro muttered.
“Well, yeah. But I’m kind of worried about being in a relationship too.”
“Yeah, why is that? You don’t seem like the type that would have problems finding someone.” Kankuro gave it a little thought. Kiba was good looking, a talented ninja, amiable and an animal lover. Ladies probably drooled over him regularly.
"Well, I'm just not sure if he is interested..."
“Ahh, so it’s a he? You seemed more like a ladies man to me.” They both chuckled.
“Nah, I’m batting for the opposite team,” Kiba replied sheepishly once again rubbing his fingers through his hair.
“Well, you are a great guy, so I guess whoever it is will be ecstatic.” Kiba nodded.
“… It’s you.” This time, it was Kankuro’s turn to spew tea everywhere.
“Come again?”
“ForgetitIreallyshouldbegoingthanksforthetea!” Kiba yelled as he got up blushing to leave the room.
“No wait!” Kankuro shouted as he jumped up to grab Kiba’s wrist. He couldn't exactly figure out what drove him to make that gesture. Perhaps he was just tired of being alone. “I didn’t know it was me… I’m flattered, really! Don’t take my shock the wrong way, please.”
Kiba smiled brilliantly. “I’ve never been to Suna before. Maybe you should show me around.”
“Yeah, sure.” Kankuro smiled shyly.
“Tonight’s 5:30 meeting should be done at around 7:00. Meet you at the koi pond at 7:30?”
“How did you know it will be ending at 7? I wasn’t aware of any time limits.”
Kiba smirked. “the Hokage keeps all of her meetings relatively short. Especially when Naruto is there. You see… when he gets bored, he finds interesting ways to entertain himself.
“Heh, go figure,” the puppeteer said.
“Yeah, he has managed to embarrass the Hokage a million and one times.”
“Well, see you at the meeting. Ja ne!”

“Stop it! Keep you hands, feet, and all other objects to yourself,” Naruto cried as Gaara’s hand quickly receded back to his side. All kinds of people passing by the couple gawked momentarily before remembering just who they were staring at continued on with their business. A smirk on the Kazekage’s normally stoic face was a rare thing to see.
It was almost scary.
Naruto continued to head for the meeting room with Gaara at his side and he was grumbling. A mischievous gleam in the Kazekage’s eye increased twofold as he poked Naruto in the side once more.
“God! Can’t someone walk in peace without being harassed!?” Naruto shouted.
“You are in a bad mood.” The red head mentally slapped himself for stating the obvious.
“Well, I don’t like meetings…”
“If you behave yourself, you can grope me tonight.” Naruto’s eye brightened.
“And frolic in a field of flowers!?” Naruto asked comically.
“You can grope me,” Gaara repeated.
“And frolic in a field of flowers!” Naruto said menacingly as he shook a fist. Gaara sighed.
“And frolic in a field of flowers,” he conceded.
“YAY!” Naruto shouted and proceed to skip down to the room with joy.
