The First Week
Chapter 6: The First Week
A week later, Ibiki had changed his mind about his mission “Sai.” This mission was worse than having all his digits broken—it was right up there with being shackled, hung from a hook on the ceiling, and repeatedly whipped.
The new apartment had helped, thank god. Now he and Sai didn’t have to share a bathroom, and they each had their own bedroom on opposite sides of the apartment. Ibiki had never stepped foot in Sai’s bedroom, never even looked in at it. He hadn’t wanted to. The few days before Tsunade had secured them the new place, he been kept awake thinking of Sai lying in that long narrow closet just on the other side of his bedroom wall. He was sleeping better now, not having a visual image of Sai’s room or bed.
But tonight they wouldn’t be going back to that apartment. They might not being going back there for a week. Kabuto had been captured, and the ANBU team that had bagged him would turn him over to I.A.T in a little under an hour. He and Sai would be working around the clock for days, possibly weeks, now. At least one of them always needed to be awake and on the job. The small bedroom, bath, and kitchenette at the ANBU secret facility that Ibiki used when he had a major case would have to do for both him and Sai. Actually having Sai around had proven a bit useful. He was able to read over Kabuto’s files and prepare his equipment while Sai was home packing up some clothes and gear for them. Ibiki had given him permission to go in his bedroom and bath to get his things.
Something struck Ibiki odd about that thought, and he replayed it in his mind. Home—that was it. When had he started thinking of the new apartment as home? He’d lived in the other place for years and never called it that—damn, just another sign that Sai was affecting him. Clearly, Ibiki had gone too long without social contact, without sex. This week with Sai had made it clear to Ibiki that he needed to change his life to include periodic social contact. It was not good to be so starved for intimacy that the first person you spent any extended amount of time with made you constantly have to fight to not get an erection and haunted your dreams at night.
A knock on the door brought Ibiki back to the present. Shizune was here to drop off more of the chakra-inhibiting drug he’d requested and to tell Ibiki about her various battles with Kabuto in person. Hearing a tale first-hand was always better than reading a report—the body told so many details that the words could not. `Well, time to earn my pay,’ thought Ibiki as he let in Shizune.
