Chapter 5 – Set me Free
-o-o-o-o-o-
-x-x-x-x-x-
Enveloped in the darkness, I could see nothing. Not a scent reached my nose, not a sound passed my ears.
It was cold... unbearably cold like ice.
I wandered what had happened. My memory was fuzzy and I couldn’t think straight. My body felt exhausted and completely drained, as if I trained non-stop the entire day.
Shivering, I wrapped my arms around myself to preserve body. It was then I noticed that I wasn’t standing on a surface, but was floating in vast nothingness.
‘What’s going on?’ I wondered, tightening my embrace on my body as well as bending my knees towards me. I felt so... alone.
I had always been alone almost my entire life, never having someone to turn o for comfort, but I was used to it.
People ignoring me to the point that it made me question my ‘false’ existence wasn’t foreign to me at all.
But this loneliness... was different. I felt really alone surrounded by complete nothingness.
And for the first time in my life, I was scared, no, terrified. I couldn’t even bring myself to move for I didn’t know where I could place my feet.
Why?
Why do I feel this way?
It was then I realized something.
Where was Kyuubi?
Reluctantly, I released myself from the security of my own embrace and looked around.
“Kyuubi?” I called out weakly, patiently waiting for a response but nothing came.
I called out to him again, this time in a much stronger voice. But still, no response reached me.
Kyuubi had always been with me since he was sealed. Even when I was little and was unaware of his presence, he was comforting me subconsciously whenever I was alone.
I wanted that. I wanted his comforting presence in my mind for it reassured me that there was someone there for me.
Kyuubi being there for me in the past (including the times when I wasn’t aware of his existence) was the only memory that was pleasant for me during my times of loneliness.
Kyuubi comforting me with soft, deep purrs and mentally caressing me with one of his tails after harsh beatings by the villagers was the reason why I didn’t go insane.
I curled myself to a fetal position, trying to control the sob that was threatening to escape me.
I wanted Kyuubi.
I wanted him to be here with me... next to me... anywhere as long as he is close to me.
“Kyuubi...”
Tears began to form and were on the verge of spilling out.
“... Please come back...”
-o-o-o-o-o-
I woke up to the sound of beeping. I could faintly hear footsteps as their owners moved about and the buzzing of whispers made by them.
From the smell of antiseptic and alcohol in the air, I deduced that I was in a hospital.
But how did I get here?
Slowly, I opened my eyes and winced from the sudden brightness. Blinking, I began to study my surroundings as soon as my vision cleared.
The beeping sounds from earlier was made by a machine that was monitoring my heart rate, pulse, and oxygen levels in my body. The footfalls and whispers were made by the nurses making their rounds.
I was confused. How long was I out? What happened and how did I get here? Hundreds of questions filled my mind and didn’t notice the individual that entered the room.
“Naruto?” a voice asked, uncertainty and concern evident from its tone.
Turning my gaze towards the source, I was faced with a pair of copper brown eyes. It took me a moment to realize that those eyes were connected to a head with long pale blond hair tied into two low pigtails.
“Baa-chan?” I rasped, my throat felling dry and painful.
Tears built up at the sides of her eyes before launching herself towards me for a reassuring embrace. The Godaime Hokage was overwhelmed with emotions, her tears falling freely down her flustered cheeks.
“Thank goodness you’re alright.” She cried while tightening her hold on me, but was mindful of the IV tube and wires connected to my body.
I slowly raised my weak arm, ignoring their protests of pain, to return her hug. At that moment, another person entered the room.
“N-Naruto-kun?”
I looked at the new comer and saw it was Shizune, Tsunade’s assistant and apprentice. Tsunade refused to relinquish her hold on me so I smiled weakly at her.
“Shizune-nee-chan.”
Hearing the hoarseness of my voice, Shizune made her way towards the bedside table were a pitcher and a glass was placed. Taking the glass, she filled it with water before proceeding to the other side of the bed.
“Tsunade-sama,” she called out, nudging her shoulder as well. “I have some water for Naruto-kun.”
Tsunade nodded and reluctantly released me from her embrace. She took the glass from her assistant, wanting to let me drink herself.
‘She really is like a mother.’ I thought as she brought the glass to my lips, not trusting me to be able to hold it up myself. ‘She had always cared for me regardless of what other people say.’
I drank the soothing liquid until the glass was empty. A breath of relief escaped me, happy that the soreness in my throat had finally ceased.
Both of them then proceeded to checking my vitals, making sure that I would not be fainting again any time soon.
They took their time checking me from head to toe, their hands glowing faintly with green chakra as they scan my body for any possible threat.
Happy that there is none, they recorded their findings onto the clipboard that was hanging at the end of the bed.
Shizune then left moments later to check on her other patients, promising to come back with some food, certain that I would be hunger after days of being unconscious.
That reminded me...
How long was I out?
“Baa-chan?” I called out; noticing that my name calling did not ticked her off like it usually did.
“Hmm?”
“How long?” I asked, not bothering to complete it for I knew that she understood what I meant.
“Two days.” She answered. “You were out for two days.”
“I see.”
So I was out for two days. Meaning today is the ninth of October, and tomorrow would be my birthday, the last day of the extraction.
Silence completely filled the room as I stared through the window, thinking of only one thing.
‘Where is Kyuubi?’
All my thoughts were revolving around him. Where was he? Was he well? Was he safe? Was he mad at me for not keeping my promise of getting back in my apartment once the sun sets two nights ago?
My heart clenched at the thought. For Kyuubi to be mad at me was painful, and for him to hate me would be unbearable.
‘I need to see him’, I thought as I stared longingly out the window.
‘I need to get out.’
“Why?”
I was startled by the question, completely forgetting that Tsunade-baa-chan was with me in the room.
“Huh?” was my only ‘intelligent’ reply.
“Why didn’t you tell me? Why would you go that far just to keep this village safe? Why do you have to suffer alone?”
Her voice was trembling. She as clearly hurt of my decision to keep everything to myself. It had been my habit not to tell anyone of my deepest secrets, not even to those whom I trust, since I was young.
Apparently, I did not grow out of that.
Tsunade was seated just beside the bed. I removed the blanket covering me and placed my legs over the side.
Seeing this, Tsunade moved from her spot and sat beside me on the bed. I wrapped my arms around her and buried my face at the crook of her neck.
“I’m sorry.”
Tsunade tensed from the sudden apology coming from me and relaxed seconds later. She returned the gesture and we stayed like that, reassuring each other.
“How long?” she asked, not bothering to continue for she knew I understand what she meant.
“For over six months now.” I answered.
“Over six months? But that was the time when you successfully brought the Uchiha brat back here.” she stated, releasing me from her hold and made eye contact with me.
“Yeah... that’s right.”
“But how?”
I sighed.
“Have you seen the seal?” I asked.
“No, I haven’t.” Tsunade answered.
Seeing that I was wearing a pair loose pants and shirt, I lifted the shirt, exposing my stomach for her to see.
Tsunade wasted no time examining it. Even though she was not an expert on seals, she still had enough knowledge about them.
“What’s wrong about it? I don’t see anything broken.”
“Baa-chan, you can clearly see the seal, right?”
She nodded.
“But I am not even channeling chakra.”
Shocked by the revelation, she eyed me with great concern and worry.
“You’re not channeling any chakra? And the seal is still visible? How can that happen?”
I shook my head.
“I don’t know how it exactly happened. But the seal was destroyed internally. So this seal on my stomach has become useless.”
Since the fact about Kyuubi having his own body was already out, I decided to tell everything that had happened, including the deal about him taking my soul once I die.
She panicked at that but I was able to calm her down and reassure her that Kyuubi would only take my soul once I die, meaning that he would wait until my life forfeits before doing anything.
Silence had once again filled the room as Tsunade-baa-chan quietly processed the information in her head.
“So how many ‘payments’ left?”
I could clearly see how much she cared about me in her eyes. I could also see that she was already thinking of ways on how to stop Kyuubi from taking his ‘payment’ for his blessings.
A small but true smile graced my lips. Tsunade-baa-chan’s motherly love for me was genuine, so genuine that I was sure that no other female could level with her at all.
“Don’t worry, Baa-chan. I only need to ‘pay’ Kyuubi one more time before the deal is finally over” I answered, grinning at her happily.
A spark of hope could be seen from her eyes. She was elated that I only had one more ‘paying session’ with Kyuubi.
“Are you sure? When? If you are not willing you can stop. I’ll try to talk to Kyuubi and-”
“I am not sure when my last ‘payment’ will be but don’t worry, Baa-chan. I am willing. I really don’t mind that I have to give my body to him for him to bless Konoha. In fact I am happy.”
“W-what?”
“I am happy, Baa-chan. I am happy that I am able to keep Konoha safe from being cursed for eternity.”
I hugged her again.
“I am happy that I am able to keep my home safe where all my precious people live. So ‘paying’ Kyuubi is nothing compared to the joy I feel knowing that I am saving everyone.
So don’t worry. After that, all of us can start anew again.”
Tears were threatening to spill from Tsunade-baa-chan when a knock interrupted our ‘moment’.
The door opened, revealing Shizune with a tray of food. At that moment, my stomach decided to make its emptiness known by growling loudly, which caused me to blush and Tsunade to laugh heartily.
-o-o-o-o-o-
An hour after finishing the food Shizune-nee-chan brought, Iruka-sensei came cried on my shoulder, apologizing for ‘not being there for me when I needed him the most.’
When I told him that it was alright, it made him cry louder, embracing me as tightly as he could without hurting me before controlling himself.
The following day, the rookie nine, along with team Gai, visited me.
All of them began apologizing for their ignorance and for being unfair to me. I brushed it all off, saying that there is nothing to apologize for but they insisted that what they did was wrong.
Iruka-sensei visited again. Moments later, our Jounin senseis visited me as well so my room was packed with people.
Even though they weren’t saying anything, I could tell that they wanted an explanation about my situation with Kyuubi. So I told them ‘everything’ about Kyuubi.
Nightfall was fast approaching and all of my visitors were evidently tired. Tsunade-baa-chan arrived and ushered all of them to go home and rest, telling them that they could visit me tomorrow.
I thanked and happily bid them farewell, which earned me questioning looks. But because of the huge grin on my face they brushed it off and said their goodbyes as well, promising to visit again tomorrow.
When all of them had left, Tsunade-baa-chan began checking my vitals again before kissing my forehead and saying good night.
She tucked me in before leaving the room.
I waited for her footsteps to disappear before sitting back up. I looked out the window and noticed that there wasn’t a festival today, which was rather odd because the village would always have a festival at this day.
The day of Kyuubi’s defeat.
I the saw Tsunade’s back as she walked away from the hospital, making her way towards the Hokage tower to continue her work.
I smiled. She may be lazy, a gambler, and a drunkard but she knew how to do her job well.
The happy smile on my lips slowly faded away, only to be replaced by a sad one.
“I’m sorry.” I said to no one in particular, seeing that I was alone in the room.
It really hurt to lie. I don’t know how some people were able to lie without feeling bad about themselves because right now, I felt really bad for not telling them the truth.
The sound of the door opening and closing reached my ears. I didn’t bother to turn around and see who it was for I already knew.
“You didn’t keep your promise, Naru-chan.”
I turned around and was face to face with Kyuubi. There wasn’t any anger or malice in him, telling me that he had already known what had happened to me two days ago.
“I’m sorry. I didn’t expect them to confront me.”
“It’s alright. I understand.”
Kyuubi took my hand gently and led me to the bed. He made me sat down on it before proceeding to push me down while he hovered above me.
Capturing my mouth with his, I moaned. His tongue licked my lower lips demanding entrance which I gave hastily.
I slowly wrapped my arms around his neck to deepen the kiss, to which he responded eagerly.
I don’t know why but for me not to be able to see him for more than a day made me crave for his touch. Kyuubi was like an addiction, a drug that I couldn’t stop taking to keep myself feel alive.
I shuddered. His hand was slowly caressing the lower part of my spine, one of my erogenous zones that he loved to tease.
I was so deep in pleasure that I didn’t hear the footfalls that was nearing us. I also didn’t hear the opening of the door nor the gasp the person made.
Only when Kyuubi stopped kissing me I started to regain my senses. When I sensed the other presence in the room I tensed.
I was scared.
Who could this person be?
I was unable to identify the person due to my jumbled senses (thanks to Kyuubi). But when I felt Kyuubi’s comforting caresses with his tails on my body, I relaxed.
Thankful, I looked up at Kyuubi and saw him smirking at the door. I craned my neck upwards to see who it was and was shocked to see Tsunade-baa-chan.
“Baa-chan.”
My voice seemed to have knocked her out of her shock and was now glaring at Kyuubi.
“Who are you!? And what are you doing to Naruto!?” she demanded, gathering chakra to her fists as she prepared to fight.
Kyuubi only chuckled, never leaving his position above me.
“Really now, can you not tell who I am from my appearance?” he asked, amusement was evident in his voice.
This ticked Tsunade off but managed to control herself. She studied the man over me before her eyes widened in realization.
“You’re Kyuubi.”
Kyuubi only smiled. I could see in Tsunade-baa-chan’s eyes that she wanted to grab me and keep me away from Kyuubi, but wouldn’t dare to anger the guardian of the land of fire.
“What are you doing here?” she asked calmly. “Can’t you see that Naruto needs his rest?”
“Can’t you see that I am busy taking my ‘payment’?” Kyuubi stated.
“But can you not do it in a different day?” she pleaded. “He is still recovering.”
Kyuubi’s smile was unnerving. It was as if he was planning to do this from the very beginning.
“Kyuubi don’t-” I started after realizing his intent but was cut off when he placed his fingers on my lips.
“What do you mean? Didn’t Naru-chan tell you that today would be his last?”
The way Kyuubi said it implied two things.
One would be about my last ‘payment’.
The second would be about my life.
And by the look of Tsunade’s face, I am certain that she understood both.
“What do you mean his last?” she asked wearily.
Kyuubi chuckled. His hand that was keeping me from speaking moved to my cheeks before going to my hair.
“Oh, don’t know.” He said as he ran his fingers through my blond locks. “What do you think?”
Tsunade-baa-chan was clenching her fist tightly. Her body was tense and she was thinking if she should barge right in and snatch me out of here, not caring that such act would anger the guardian of fire.
Kyuubi could read her body language as well, his tails flickering in amusement.
“I see, now I understand.” Kyuubi stated before transferring his gaze from her towards me. “It seems that this little one hasn’t been completely honest with you.”
I couldn’t move. I couldn’t speak. It was as if I was frozen in place by just his gaze.
“So what did he tell you about his ‘payment’? What do you think his ‘payment’ really is?” Kyuubi asked, his eyes left me and went back to looking at Tsunade-baa-chan in the eyes.
“His body.” She answered. “It is just his body, correct?”
Kyuubi chuckled again.
“True, but not the complete truth.”
Kyuubi started to caress my face before moving to my neck, his fingers barely touching the bite mark which made me shiver and a little dazed.
‘Damn.’ I thought. If I wasn’t so sensitive (physically) I would had been able to tolerate his ghostly touches.
But then again, since these very sensual and comforting touches were foreign to me when I was young, I guess my body’s sensitivity increased ten folds (1) or something so as to be able to detect the slightest comforting stimulant.
Or maybe it was because of my want to be touched (2), to be comforted since I was given none of it early in my life and felt only pain.
And by the look of things, it would appear that Kyuubi knew of my weakness to touch and took advantage of it to keep me quiet.
‘Damn fox.’
“What do you mean it’s not the complete truth?”
“Tell me, you think that just having his body is enough payment for my blessings to the entirety of Konoha? Do you think that I would accept such a small payment after all the things Konoha had done to my vessel?”
Tsunade-baa-chan shook her head, knowing that my life here wasn’t a bed of roses.
“The only payment I would accept is that I be given something that will enable me to go back to my realm, the realm where my fellow guardians and I live and rest.”
“Then what is that something?”
Kyuubi smirked. He bent down, his head nearing the junction of my neck and shoulder, and licked the bite mark there, making me gasp uncontrollably.
Happy with my reaction and much to Tsunade-baa-chan’s dismay, he gave me a deep, powerful kiss, leaving me completely dazed and breathless, before looking back at her again.
“The only thing that will enable me to go back to my realm is life essence.”
“Life essence?” then her eyes widened in realization. “Then that means-”
Kyuubi cut her off. “That’s right. A singe human has the necessary amount of essence that I need to be able to go back. But I can’t just have any essence given to me.”
Kyuubi’s caresses on my body stopped, enabling me to get back to my senses.
“I need the life essence from a willing donor. That donor should not have a trace of hesitation or fear towards me. He or she should not have been forced or brainwashed to accept such a role.”
Kyuubi lined up his body along mine, his face moving closer to mine while keeping eye contact with Tsunade-baa-chan.
She couldn’t move. The shock of finding out about the truth overcame her senses.
“Naruto here fits the requirement. No other person in the land of fire fits even half of the requirements.”
His eyes left her and were now fixed with mine. His mouth was moving closer to the bite mark as his breath tickled my skin.
I closed my eyes, my heart beating fast as I anticipate what was coming next.
“That’s right. You fit it perfectly well, Naru-chan.” And with that he sank his fangs through my flesh.
I could feel it. I could feel my life being drained though the punctures he made on my skin.
And being the sensitive person that I was, I moaned, snapping Tsunade-baa-chan from her shock before she realized what was happening.
“No! Stop it!” she screamed, bolting towards the bed but was pushed back by an invisible barrier.
Kyuubi must have placed it when she was still in shock.
She was surprised but had no intention of stopping there. She moved towards the barrier as she could now sense it and began banging her fists on it.
“Stop!” she begged. “Please stop it! Don’t kill him!”
I was panting and a bit dazed, but I was conscious enough to hear Tsunade-baa-chan’s pleads.
“Please...” tears began spilling from her eyes. “Please don’t take him away from me...” She tried breaking the barriers with her chakra-enforced fists but failed. Kyuubi’s chakra was far stronger than hers and the entire village combined.
Her actions were futile and she knew it but refused to give up. She wanted Kyuubi to stop. She wanted him to spare me and find someone else, anyone, as long as it wasn’t me.
I was certain that someone would have sensed Tsunade-baa-chan’s flaring chakra by now.
“Baa-chan.” I weakly called out, Kyuubi’s fangs sunk deeper but I felt no pain.
She looked at me, her face stricken with tears and pain as she looked at me pleadingly to stop Kyuubi myself.
I smiled, which surprised her. She stopped banging her now-bloodied fists.
My vision was beginning to fade, a sign that my life was nearing its end.
‘This is it.’ I thought. ‘I’m finally dying.’
“Baa-chan. Thank you.”
Her tears came out full force.
“And I love you, for being the mother I never had.”
She dropped to her knees, our eye contact never breaking.
It was seconds later when three elite ANBU garbed in cloaks arrived followed by some Jounin whom I could no longer recognize.
They wasted no time in trying to break the barrier. But just like Tsunade-baa-chan, all their efforts were wasted.
“Please tell Shizune-nee-chan, Iruka-sensei, and Ero-sennin thank you, because you four were the family that I had always dreamed of having. And also to my friends for accepting me and for acknowledging that I am my own person.”
My vision had faded to black. I could no longer see and was barely alive.
“Thank you... and I’m sorry...”
With that, my body fell limp.
-o-o-o-o-o-
It was raining... and it was the day of the funeral of the Kyuubi vessel, the container of the guardian, not demon, of the land of fire.
All of the citizens of Konoha attended. Everyone was dressed in black clothing as a sign of mourning.
Konoha had lost its ‘ball of sunshine’ just two days ago. Those who knew Naruto were devastated of his death.
All of them stood in front of the casket where Naruto’s body lied. His picture was placed above the casket, surrounded by white flowers, all given by the villagers one by one.
A sad aura filled the village. A day after his death, Tsunade felt it right to reveal everything Naruto had done for the village, his pain, his sacrifice, and his never ending love and loyalty for Konoha.
Villagers who had hated him regretted their actions. Individuals who knew him regretted not noticing their friend’s pain.
A strong breeze passed through the mourning villagers, making them shut their eyes and use their hands to shield their faces.
Uchiha Sasuke, who was at the front, along with those who knew Naruto, only narrowed his eyes to prevent dirt from getting in. He didn’t bother shielding his face because for him, it was a sign of weakness.
When the breeze died, a small flash of red caught his attention. Because all the others had closed their eyes from the breeze, he was only one who had noticed.
Staring at the direction of the source, his eyes widened when he saw a tall man with long red hair staring straight back at him.
The man was wearing a cloak, which shielded his body from the rain.
Sasuke was about to ignore the man when he noticed nine crimson tails swaying behind the man.
“Kyuubi...”
Those who heard Sasuke stared at him in confusion. They followed his line of sight and gasped at seeing Kyuubi, which alerted all the others.
Everyone stared at the Guardian fox. There were those who felt fear, others anxiety, and some hate.
Sasuke was one of those who felt hate. He hated Kyuubi for taking Naruto, for taking his rival and first and only true friend.
He was about to charge when Kyuubi opened his cloak, revealing a smaller figure who was hidden by the cloth.
Sasuke immediately recognized the smaller figure. He had spiky blond hair and sapphire blue eyes. The whisker-like marks no longer marred his cheeks and he was dressed in a plain white yukata.
“Naruto.” He said weakly, but even though they were a great distance away, Naruto had heard him and gave him a smile.
All the other recognized the blond as well. They wanted to approach him but couldn’t move from their spot.
Naruto worded out a silent ‘thank you’, before disappearing with the nine tailed guardian.
The sad aura that had filled the village had dissipated.
Miraculously, the pain, sorrow, and guilt had disappeared from their minds. Their person felt light and renewed.
As if all the negative things were washed away, leaving them clean and refreshed.
As if they were given a second chance.
After the burial, all the villagers went back to their homes, reflecting on their past actions and thinking of ways to reconcile.
The following day, they went back to their daily routines, their mind and soul feeling light.
They had no idea why they were feeling this way. Their minds were blank of the events that had happened the previous day.
-o-o-o-o-o-
At the training grounds of team seven, two young shinobi, a male and a female, stood there waiting patiently for their sensei.
Their sensei was already almost two hours late, but this didn’t bother the two for they were already used to their very tardy teacher’s habits.
A puff of smoke signaled his arrival. The silver haired man greeted his students before spouting off an excuse for being late and ended up being called a liar by his female student.
“Okay, Sakura-chan, Sasuke-kun, the Hokage gave us a B-rank mission. We will be briefed about it at the mission room.”
“Hai, Kakashi-sensei.”
Kakashi turned around and proceeded to walk towards the Hokage tower, with Sakura only a few feet behind them.
The two only managed to walk for five meters when they noticed that the other wasn’t following.
“Sasuke-kun?” Sakura called out as she walked closer to her teammate. She noted he had a far away look on his face and wasn’t moving.
Kakashi approached his student and placed his hand on Sasuke’s shoulder, effectively waking him from his dazed state.
“Is there something wrong Sasuke-kun?” Kakashi asked.
Sasuke only stared at his sensei for about a minute before answering.
“No, there’s nothing wrong.”
“Then what were you thinking about?”
Sasuke bit his inner lip.
“Sensei, don’t we have a third teammate?” he asked.
Kakashi’s eyebrows rose.
“A third teammate?”
“Yes. I have a feeling that we have a third teammate but I can’t remember who.”
“What are you talking about Sasuke-kun?” the female of the group asked. “We never had a third teammate. It has always been the two of us and Kakashi-sensei.”
Sasuke frowned. He had been having sudden flashes in his mind about a blond haired boy whom he was certain that was his teammate. He also had a feeling that that boy was important to him but couldn’t remember why.
“Maa, Sasuke-kun. Maybe you had a dream about you having a third teammate.” Kakashi stated before resuming his walk towards the Hokage tower.
“A dream?”
Sasuke thought about it himself. Yes, it did make perfect sense that it was a dream.
He started to follow the two before stopping again.
‘Wait... if it is a dream then how come it felt so real.’
He thought about it again and then realized that he was being left behind. He ran towards them, shoving his thoughts about the unknown blond boy to the back of his mind.
‘It’s a dream. But if it really is a dream, why do I feel that I want that boy to be real?’
He caught up with his sensei and teammate. Thoughts about the blond boy were slowly disappearing from his mind as two pairs of eyes, one blue and one red, watched from a distance before disappearing.

(1) I exaggerated.
(2) I hope that when you read that that you had clean thoughts, not green. ;D
Before anyone asks, Kyuubi is not sucking Naruto’s blood. He’s not a vampire. He may have swollowed some blood since he is biting him but that is not what he was taking.
If you still not get it, well there are people who die but still have blood in them, right?
Go figure. XD

Go figure. XD

There you have it. I hope you like it. XD
