Chapter 5

"So he's back?"

"I don't know Baa-chan."

"DAMN!" Her hand came down and smashed another desk in half. "SHIZUNE! Get me another desk!" Sakura and Sai had already given their reports and left, now Naruto stood in front of her telling her that her former teammate wasn't dead like Sasuke said but in fact, alive. Naruto didn't know how and neither did she so she was stuck. "Get Sasuke in here Naruto."

"Hai." He left and came back half an hour later with the Uchiha.

"He's back Sasuke. How?" Sasuke's face becamse set in stone as the emotionless facade fell more firmly into place.

"What happened?" Tsunade explained and Naruto corrected her when she got something wrong and when she finished, she waited paitently, or as paitently as she could, for an answer.

Sasuke sat down in one of the chairs across from the Hokage and thought deeply. He remembered something Kabuto had mumbled during one of the many times he'd been on a cold slab of steel. "He had to have one part of his original body to make the transformation." He was talking like a record, his voice flat and his eyes far off. "Without the living part, the body transfer wasn't possible. It is possible however to attach the part to another body so I am guessing that's what Kabuto did. When he did, he got more than he expected."

Tsunade was astonished. "How did you know that?" Sasuke just looked away and she nodded. "You'll tell me later."

"Hn." Sasuke studied the floor with much more interest than he should have. "He's not after just me."

Tsunade and naruto looked at him. "Explain."

"He want's the twins as well."

"Why?" came from Naruto but Tsunade silenced him.

"That will not happen Sasuke." She looked to Naruto and pointed to the chair next to Sasuke's. "Sit. We have a lot to discuss."

"You have to WHAT?!" Sakura was looking at Naruto with a look that could have killed anyone, if looks could kill. She of course, wasn't directing it at Naruto but at the floor next to him. "Damn her!"

"Don't say that Sakura-chan."

"Oh, I'll say it all I want to Naruto." She continued to curse and started to pace. They were at her apartment since Naruto hadn't exactly wanted to go home yet.

"It will be okay."

"No, Naruto, it won't."

Naruto sighed and leaned against the hand that was proped up on the top of the kitchen table. he knew she would be angry and he also knew she would probably argue with the Hokage all day to try and change what decision had already been made but there was nothing she could do. Nothing any of them could do.

"I can't believe she is making you live with him! How could she be such an-an...idiot?!"

"You know, if she heard you saying any of this she would probably beat you senseless."

"Maybe but I am just angry enough to give her a run for her money." She sat down finally and took one of his hands in hers. "I will go in your place Naruto. As much as I could kill that...person," she said the last like it was something slimy, "I would much rather it be me than you. Besides, I am a much better healer than you are so I beat the crap out of him, I could make him look good as new and no one would be the wiser." They both laughed and she patted the hand she held. Naruto looked into her eyes as she looked down at their hands. She really did seem to care.

"Sakura-chan?"

"What Naruto?"

"When did you start to care so much? Why did you never tell me?" She breathed heavy and released his hand.

"I have always thought you were the most annoying, idiotic and unpredictable ninja in our generation Naruto but I guess after a while I started to see that you were different than everyone pegged you at. I hated you because my parents hated you, because my friends hated you." She stood and went to the fridge, pulling out some juice and walked to the counter to pour two cups of it. "The it was already the Chunin exams." She paused long enough to hand him a glass. He muttered thanks but went back to listening.

"After I saw what happened to you and...him...I couldn't just stand by thinking that you were some evil-" she tried thinking of the right word.

"Thing?"

"I guess that's right. And then you saved me from Gaara. I always said it was him who did it even when he said it was you because even though I started to realize you were different from what everyone said, I didn't want it to be you. At that point I was in love with him." She laughed a little, shaking her head and took a sip of her juice. "Then he left me. He left us. He knocked me out, left me on a bench and then almost killed you. After that, after seeing you in the hospital after Kakashi brought you back, my heart hurt. Yes, Naruto, my heart. You grew on me. I treated you like a plague and you treated me like the world.

"I knew I had been the biggest jerk and I told myself I would make it up to you. That's when you and I decided to go after him. Then, I guess you became like...like family. You were still my teammate but you were like the brother I have never had. Sure, it seems petty and probably stupid but I knew that everyone hating you was just as stupid and as petty as my treating you like the plague. You are too nice for your own good Naruto and it rubs off. There is just something about you that I can't hate. I can dislike the hell out of you at times but I can't hate you. I don't hate my friends Naruto. I don't hate my family."

Naruto was looking at her and smiling. "You know, I never thought you were one for long speaches until I heard you talking to Sas-" he paused and then rephrased, "-him and now, you give me a horrid explanation of why you never told me why you cared but I guess...I guess that's okay." He laughed when she punched him in the arm and then they started laughing together.

When they'd managed to pull themselves back together, Sakura looked at him and sighed. "I guess we better go pack your things."

"Yea."

"I could still go in your place."

"No. It's okay Sakura." He smiled and stood, heading for his shoes and the door. Sakura followed and all the way to Naruto's apartment she tried to talk him into letting her take his place but he adamantly refused. When she'd given up, they were already packing his things. Sakura spotted something under his bed and picked it up. It was a black shirt. "What's this?" It didn't look like anything Naruto wore so it was a curious item.

"Oh, that's probably Sai's."

Sakura did a double take at him and he cursed. "Sorry Naruto, what was that?"

"Sai. You know, our teammate?"

"Yea...so what's his shirt doing here?"

"Well he sleeps over."

"Sleeps...over?" She was having a very hard time comprehending what he was saying. What would Sai, of all people, be sleeping over at Naruto's house and in his bed no less? Well, she wasn't sure about the bed part but why was his shirt under it?

"It's not what you think really Sakura."

"I'm not thinking anything Naruto other than why on earth Sai would be sleeping over."

"I don't know. It's not like we're together or anything but he just sleeps over. Nothing big." He probably should have kept his mouth shut but then again, she would have wondered and the speculation would start with her telling Ino and then Ino would spread it wide open for everyone. So, it was probably better he told her anyways.

"Uhu. Naruto?"

"What Sakura?"

"You really are Konoha's number one unpredictable ninja. Only you would think it was nothing that a guy was sleeping over."

"What do you mean by that?"

"Have you ever wondered why Sai would be sleeping over?"

"Not really no."

"Of course." She would have to talk to her teammate and see exactly why he was sleeping at Naruto's house. Sure, she still didn't care much for Sai but he was her teammate and that meant that she had to put up with him. Sakura noticed that he and Naruto had grown closer but she didn't think that Sai was really capable of feeling the relationship. She shook her head, lost to her own thoughts and tossed the article of clothing back under the bed.

It didn't take long to pack up Naruto's things and soon they were moving towards the part of the village where the Uchiha compound was. Naruto felt like it was some sort of impending doom and he knew that whatever he had done to the crazy old lady up in the big office to piss her off enough for her to put him here, he would never do it again. Sakura had stayed quiet since they left Naruto's apartment. He thought she didn't want to make this any worse than it had to be. Once they got there, she gave Sasuke a warning look, checked on the twins and left.

Naruto was looking around the kitchen for the ramen Shikamaru was supposed to have bought him so long ago but he couldn't find it.

"You already ate it all Naruto."

"What?"

"The ramen you're looking for."

"How did you know what I was looking for?"

"You only look in my cupboards when you're hungry and you don't eat anything but ramen so it wasn't hard."

"Humph." Naruto closed the cupboard he was looking in and sat back down at the table. He hadn't said much to Sasuke and vise versa. Neither one of them was happy about the Hokage's decision but they would both live with it. They had to.

Looking rather disgruntled, Naruto got up and started walking around the compound. He noticed the dying flowers, baskets of rotten food and he wondered why Sasuke hadn't moved any of them. Picking them up he started to look for somewhere to throw them away. Why was he even bothering? Well, they smelled rancid and they looked awful. He finally found somewhere to dump them and it wasn't soon enough. He thought his nose was going to fall off or something.

As he continued to walk around the compound, Naruto actually noticed the damage that everyone was working on fixing in Sasuke's yard. They had finally gotten someone to put it back to normal. Stopping to survey the yard, Naruto couldn't help but smile at the way Sakura surprised Sasuke. The bastard would never admit it but for a moment his face had betrayed him. Walking back into the house, Naruto prepared for his time at the Uchiha mansion.

Two months passed and everything was going well. The twins were starting to roll over onto their backs and they wiggled even more than they had when Naruto had first saw them. They kicked all the time so Naruto had gone out and bought them both a toy that reacted when it was kicked. It made music. He liked it but Sasuke didn't.

Neither of them talked to the other much and they mostly kept to themselves unless they were around the girls. Sasuke never told Naruto why he'd come back and Naruto didn't ask more than five times a day. The girls had become more attached to Naruto in the time he'd been living with Sasuke and it almost seemed that Sasuke was happy about it but he didn't say anything. They hadn't seen Sakura in a week or so and it bothered Naruto a little that she hadn't ven mentioned she'd be going anywhere but he knew she had priorities.

It was dinner time now for the girls and Naruto and Sasuke both were covered in baby puke and neither of them was happy.

"WHY did you give that to them Naruto?"

"Because Baa-chan said it would be okay teme!"

"We all need baths..." Grumbling to himself, Sasuke headed to the bathroom and Naruto followed silently cursing himself. He'd listened to Tsundae when she said he could give them a little juice and it had backfired. It seemed that the girls didn't like grape juice...or it didn't like them. Purple baby puke...not only did it smell to high heavens but it was purple, sticky and it dried quicker than water. Ew.

Once in the bathroom, Naruto and Sasuke stripped the girls and then themselves. Naruto stayed in his boxers becauses they weren't covered in the yuky stuff and he decided that just washing his top half would be good enough but Sasuke, well, he stripped to nothing, started the water for a bath for the girls and got in with them. Naruto thought it was odd but it saved time he supposed. Shrugging to himself, he washed up quickly, pulled one of the babies over to him and washed her up. Soon after, he was dressing her and putting her down for a nap. Sasuke was soon to follow, now that he smelled better and both he and the other girl were clean.

"Sorry," Naruto said. Sasuke just shrugged and left the room. Naruto growled at him but left as well, shutting the door half way. Aito and Hikime immediately started to cry but they left them there so they would go to sleep. It was hard on Naruto since he didn't like to see them unhappy but that's what Sakura told them to do. She said if they babied them and picked them up whenever they cried they would become to dependant and spoiled, so, they left them.

Back down in the living room, Naruto saw Sasuke was reading a book on parenting. He never would have thought he'd see it but Sasuke was trying to be a good father.

"I wonder where Sakura's been lately." Naruto looked away after he mentioned it but he knew Sasuke didn't care much. Sakura expressed her dislike of him openly and he ignored it but he didn't care much for her either. Some things didn't change.

A knock on the door had them looking at it strangely and Naruto got up to answer. When he opened the door, he found Iruka looking down at the ground, hands clasped in front of himself. "Naruto...I have some bad news-"

"What's wrong iruka-sensei?" He pulled his former teacher inside, worry spreading across his face.

"It's Sakura. She's in the hospital...and they don't know if she's going to make it."

Naruto's face paled. He started mumbling something and flew out the door. He took to the rooftops and ran as fast as he could to get to the hospital. Within minutes he was yelling at the nurse at the front desk that he needed to know what room she was in. Tsunade came out of a hallway and told him. She said nothing else and her face looked rather grim as well. he started shaking his head no and ran up to her room. There was only one other person in the room and that was Neji. He was curled up on the bed next to her, obviously thinking no one else was coming for a while. He hyuuga prodigy looked over and it was evident he'd been crying. Neji cry? He never would have thought neji could express such emotion.

Walking over to the bed, Naruto had to look behind Neji to even catch a glimpse at her.

"You don't want to look Naruto."

"I have to look Neji." Neji just nodded and moved off of the bed.

There were more tubes, machines and needles than he'd ever seen anywhere. She was being helped to breath by a machine while another monitored her head, pule and brain function. "What-" his voice was hoarse, "What happened?"

Neji pulled a chair close to the bed for himself and one for Naruto. Naruto flopped down and Neji picked up Sakura's hand, holding it gently.

"She was on a mission. It was a simple mission, scout this area and report back after two weeks. She never completed it. She made it a mile outside of the gate before she collapsed and started going in resperatory distress-"

"Simple Neji. Simple."

"Her heart was starting to sputter Naruto. Most of her body was broken. Her chakra pathways were cut and she...she-" He couldn't finish so he didn't ask. He'd find Baa-chan later and ask. Right now he stayed with her preying for her to open her eyes and change everyone's opinions.

"She's in a coma. She may never wake up Naruto. Her brain function and her heart are what's keeping her alive right now. I did all I could. I put her chakra pathways together, healed most of her bones, major cuts and most of the muscle tears but there is only so much I can do. It's up to her to come out of it Naruto."

"There has to be more you can do. Look what you did for Lee!"

"Lee only had a shattered leg Naruto. They beat her almost to death after they made it so she couldn't defend herself. It was by the grace of God she made it out of there and close to home where the ANBU found her." Naruto had been at her for hours trying to get her to fix what she couldn't and it was starting to wear on her already exhausted body.

"But Baa-chan-"

"I can't do anything else Naruto." He sighed and walked away, defeated. "Who was it?"

"Sound Nin."

"Okay." He left and headed back to her room to sit with Neji. He looked rough around the edges and his poofy eyes were evident he wasn't dealing with this well. Naruto had tried to talk him into going to get something to eat or drink or to even go sleep but he refused and said he wanted to be there when she woke up. He wondered vaugly if Tsunade had told him she may never wake up. He wouldn't be the one to break it to his fellow shinobi so he kept it to himself.

An hour or so later, Naruto had fallen asleep, head on the bed, hand holding Sakura's. Neji watched her breathing, her face and he preyed. He had never done anything of the sort but he preyed that she would wake up. He sighed and got up. he was thirsty and the nurses said they wouldn't bring him anything to eat or drink so he'd have to go get it himself. He left the room, making sure not to wake Naruto and headed out.

ON the way to the cafeteria, Neji passed one Sasuke Uchiha. "What are you doing here Uchiha?"

"I'm going to visit someone."

"Who?"

"None of your business."

"If it's Sakura you are going to visit, you're not welcome."

"I never said it was Sakura did I Hyuuga?" They had a small staredown but Sasuke conceeded and walked away. He headed up to the patient he wanted to see and walked in quietly. There was a head sticking up from one side of the bed full of blonde hair and then he got a good look at Sakura. He didn't like what he saw very much.

"Here's to hoping this works." He sighed and walked over, Standing at the head of the bed and opened both of her eyes. As his bled into red and black they started to swirl and soon enough, he was inside of her mind.

"Sakura?" It seemed she was reliving a memory of the three of them way back when. he didn't much care for it but she looked back at him and the dream shattered.

"What the-"

"Shut up for a minute." Her mouth gaped but no sound came out. "What happened to you?"

"I was ambushed."

"Why haven't you woke up yet?"

"Huh? I thought I was awake."

"You're in a coma."

"Oh." She looked away for a moment. "You don't care so why are you here? How did you get here?"

"There are many interesting things about the Sharingan that I would like to keep hidden if you don't mind."

"Ahh. But that still doesn't answer my first question. Why are you here? This is my mind and you are intruding."

"Well, I guess that's true but it seems you have some people worried. And I would like to know who attacked you. So, if you wish, I am here for my own purposes and maybe one other that I will keep to myself."

"Of course. For your own gain."

"As you wish." He looked at her, his eyes still red but waited for her to talk.

"How's Neji?"

"His eyes were red and puffy. I think he was crying. He warned me not to come up here so I don't think we have long."

"Hmph." She crossed her arms over her chest and looked at him. "What do you want to know oh-perfect-one?"

"Who attacked you?"

"Sound shinobi."

"How many?"

"Five."

"What did they look like?"

"Four men and one woman. The woman played what looked to be a harp and when she played it made her companions stronger."

"Anything else?"

"Other than I think you should leave my head and tell everyone I'm still alive, no not really."

"Naruto is sleeping by your right hand." She just looked at him and his dissipated into nothing.

Sasuke came to himself in time to feel a punch to his side. He caught himself and held his side. Looking at Neji in that moment, he knew he shouldn't have let his guard down. "What are you doing here Uchiha? I said you were not welcome."

"I had some information to get." Neji scoffed and walked towards him slowly.

"Leave. Now."

"Fine." Sasuke walked passed him and to the door where he stopped, "Welcome back Sakura." The door closed behind him and he walked out as a flush of nurses and the Hokage came running passed him into Sakura's room.

"SAKURA-CHAN!" Naruto's loud mouth could be heard even down the hall. Sasuke sighed and walked out of the hospital.

"That was a nice thing to do."

"I don't do nice."

"I know you don't but it was still nice." Kakashi hopped down from a tree, hands in his pockets and started walking next to Sasuke.

"I don't do nice."

"Whatever you say Sasuke." For a few moments they walked in silence but it was odd that Kakashi would know what he did unless he was watching from somewhere.

"What do you want Kakasi?"

"Information."

"Hn."

"You can tell me or I can go get it from Hokage-sama. Whichever comes first."

'She won't tell you kakashi. You'd be waisting your time."

"She will tell me but, she asked me to ask you first."

"Well, I don't know anything."

Kakashi sighed and stepped in front of him. He was forced to stop walking or collide with his former sensei. It annoyed him that he had to break pace but his face betrayed nothing as per usual. He did look up at Kakashi who looked down at him with a rather serious face. Well, for one eye it was serious.

"You do know Sasuke and I need to know. Start talking." Sasuke pushed passed the gray haired shinobi and continued walking. It was not something he was going to discuss with anyone. The Hokage knew because she was the only one that needed to know. Even if Kakashi was told to ask him he wasn't going to say anything. He'd told it once and he wasn't going to say it again.

"So, it seems you can have more than the two you have now right?" That stopped him in his tracks and he felt his eyes changing. What did he know exactly?

"What did you say?"

"I'm saying Aito and Hikime won't be the only two will they?"

"If I have anything to say about it they are. How do you know this?"

"I told you, Hokage-sama wants me to know what you obviously don't want me too. So, you can start talking or I can continue to blab out personal information. I am a very easy person to negotiate with Sasuke-kun, you just have to be willing to help me out."

Growling, Sasuke launched at his former sensei but landed in dirt. He tried to spin but was pinned on the ground. "Come now Sasuke-kun, did you really think you could hit me?"

"Let me up and I'll prove you wrong." Kakashi clicked his mouth and in one blow, knocked his former student out. "I wish you would have taken my up on the offer."
