Sai is Sai
*Note: This chapter took me a little longer to write then usual. Sorry for the wait, I hope you enjoy the tension.*
Sai locked eyes with Naruto and Naruto looked back at him. The hot water from the shower was making steam that swirled around them both and their skin flushed darker then it naturally was. Naruto slowly removed his hand from Sai’s mouth and Sai didn’t dare to speak up yet. “No one has the right to do that to you when you didn’t do anything to deserve it. Sure, you’re a pain in the ass…but in the end you helped us out, even if we didn’t catch Sasuke…” Naruto said, then sighed deeply. Sai watched Naruto’s expression change from anger to concern, then to sadness. Such a display of emotions and so openly, Sai couldn’t help by stare. He read about situations like these and he was suppose to do something about Naruto’s sadness…Comfort, was it?
He reached out, using his left hand to touch the lines on Naruto’s cheek, petting at the skin with his thumbnail while Naruto was far too busy pouting want to pull away. Even if he did, he wouldn’t be fast enough as Sai leaned in, pressing his lips onto his. Suddenly, all of Naruto’s sulking came to a halt and his body froze stiff. Was Sai…Sai was kissing him…but it wasn’t horrible. Actually, up close like this, Sai really did look like Sasuke. His wide blue-eyes softened, but he kept them open as he waited for Sai to pull away as his own lips stayed dormant. Sai soon opened his eyes and pulled away from Naruto’s mouth, blinking at him, but kept his hand on Naruto’s face. He wasn’t really sure what was suppose to happen now, so he just backed off, letting his hand drop to his side and waited for some type of response from the other boy.
Naruto looked over Sai from face to toes, then scrolled his eyes back up Sai’s body. Thin, pale, small, and those eyes. Sai rubbed his arm and shifted his body a little, uncomfortable as he was being inspected. His cheeks flushed slightly and he looked away, not really sure what to say in this awkward air. “Was that the wrong thing to do?” he finally mustered up the courage to ask softly. “I read that the thing to do when someone you like is sad is to kiss them…Was that wrong?” he asked again, looking sadly at Naruto as he rubbed his arm a few more times before dropping his hands to his sides. “Someone you like?” Naruto asked, smiling softly. He felt kind of bad for Sai not being able to differentiate friendships over crushes, then again, with the way he felt about Sasuke, Naruto knew that he couldn’t be that judgmental about it.
Sai was a little surprised when Naruto started to laugh as he scrubbed at his underarms. “Well, you see Sai. There’s different kinds of like…”, Naruto tried to explain, switching underarms. “There’s friendly-like…like me and you…and there’s crush-like…like how I like Sakura-chan…then…” He was interrupted by Sai jumping into his speech. Sai stepped forward, his eyes serious and his nose just about touching Naruto’s that made him go cross-eyed. “What’s the ‘like’ between you and Sasuke?” Sai stared at Naruto and Naruto gave a nervous laugh, blushing slightly and looked away. “Um…”, he stammered, scratching the side of his face, then blew the suds off of his finger onto Sai’s nose. Now it was Sai’s turn to go cross-eyed as he stumbled back a few steps. “That’s complicated”, Naruto then said, smiling in confidence.
Sai brushed off the soap on his nose and looked at Naruto, completely unsatisfied with that response. “I want to be with you like you are with Sasuke. I want that type of like, that type of bond…”, he said, trying his best to be assertive. “I want to see those emotions more…I want…”, but Naruto interrupted him. “That’s impossible”, he said as he went back to scrubbing himself, now working on getting the paint off of his stomach and crotch areas. “There’s no way that I can think of you the same way I think of Sasuke.”
“Why not?”
“Because Sasuke is Sasuke and Sai is Sai.”
“So think of me as Sasuke”, Sai smiled, thinking the answer was obvious.
To Naruto’s surprise, that is when Sai left him alone in the shower to think it over. “Was that an offer…and if so an offer for what exactly?” Naruto frowned, thinking to himself as his eyes followed Sai around the bathroom. He watched Sai dry off his thin body so carefully, getting every part of himself completely but left his hair damp. He watched Sai leave the bathroom, closing the door gently behind himself. What was with that?…And more importantly, why was Naruto thinking about it so much. He scrubbed himself harder in frustration, unable to clear his mind of everything that just happened. Every time he tried not to think about it, he only ended up thinking about it more until he couldn’t stand it. With a loud, aggravated groan, he turned off the water and sulked out the shower, heading towards Sai’s room without stopping to dry himself off.
