It had been a long week since Naruto’s arrival at his house. To say it had started off well would have been a lie. Once the ooo’s and ahhh’s at Sasuke’s grand house were over the blonde began to complain. Firstly he’d been under the impression that’d he’d only be working with Sasuke and not living with him. Sasuke had concluded that the man was in fact the dobe he kept calling him, how could he not know he’d be staying with him?
After that initial drama was over, with a lot of moaning on Naruto’s behalf, Sasuke had shown Naruto to his new bedroom. Which of course led to another argument. Sasuke couldn’t see what was wrong with the navy and white walls of the guest bedroom, but Naruto insisted it was awful and considering it was his room Sasuke had allowed him to change it. Stupidly. He now had a bright orange and white guest room- it was lucky only Naruto went in there, anyone else would lose their eyesight.
It didn’t take long for Naruto to complain about another thing. His clothes. In Sasuke’s haste to get Naruto out of his home Sasuke had forgotten a very important thing- Naruto’s belongings. Which of course led to Naruto wanting to go back a retrieve some of his things such as his own clothes, pictures and other sentimental objects. Sasuke didn’t do sentimental, hence him outright refusing to go back. Which led to Naruto thowing several breakable objects around his house and slicing his favourite shirt to pieces. A comprise was reached, they’d return to Naruto house at the end of the week to gather his things, in the mean time Naruto would borrow Sasuke’s.
Sasuke took great delight in seeing the blonde man tumble on the end of his jeans. Being tall had it’s perks.
Which was why the two men were riding across the night on the back of Sasuke’s fastest horse. Sasuke egged the horse on and enjoyed the sensation of the arms tightening around his waist as the speed increased. The horse galloped across the clouds, white mane clashing with the blackness of the sky. Sasuke had decided long ago that this was one of the best things about his job. Rushing through the air, wind caressing his face and stars twinkling around him. Although the ride was considerably more enjoyable with a warm body pressed against his back.
Naruto’s home came into view and Sasuke reigned the horse in. The hoof’s tapped quietly on the concrete as the two men slide off it’s back, Sasuke giving it a gentle pat. They walked towards the small house come bar, Naruto had already demanded they walk through the front door, apparently walking through walls ‘freaked him out’. Entering the bar they were greeted with silence and sombre faces. Sasuke saw Naruto’s eyes widen as he processed the situation, while he mentally beat himself up over his bad timing.
A wake! Of course they’d be a wake! It had been around a week now since Naruto had been officially dead to the world, of naturally he’d be remembered again and buried properly. Sasuke cursed his bad luck as he took the smaller man’s hand and led him through a sea of black. Nobody glance up at them as Naruto walked by in a daze.
Sasuke wasn’t at all surprised to see the large number of people, Naruto was popular, friendly and loved. It made his chest ache to think he’d be stealing the boy from this life when he’d obviously been so happy and looked after. A white-haired man stood, tears streaking his face, and tapped a glass calling everyone’s attention. Sasuke tugged at Naruto more fiercely, determined to get the blonde man out of the room before the speech began. No good would come of it, it’d only upset Naruto.
Sasuke forced Naruto into the apartment just as the husky voice began to talk, words like ‘love’ and ‘inspiration to everyone’ drifted up into the silent room. Naruto continued to stare off into space, eyes sparkling with unshed tears. Sasuke resisted the urge to bite his lip with worry- he was a Uchiha he could handle this! He walked into Naruto’s bedroom, the blonde man following as if in a trance. Nothing had been moved, yet it had a clean smell, it reminded Sasuke of a shrine. He began packing bags with things he considered necessary tops, jeans, underwear and several pictures on a bedside table. What else would the blonde man want? Sasuke tried to put himself in the mind frame of someone overly sensitive and sentimental. He failed. His frustration began to build as Naruto’s silence continued.
“I thought…I thought they’d all forgotten…that they wouldn’t hurt…” Naruto mumbled, his voice as distant as his eyes.
Sasuke sat on the edge of the bed and allowed himself to sigh. What could he say to that? He hadn’t considered that his friends and family would eventually remember Naruto. Although it was stupid of him to think otherwise- who could forget the loud-mouthed blonde?
“Naruto…” He stalled, what should he say? He was a Uchiha and they’d never been very good at comforting. Sure an ice cold glare or and indifferent grunt they were masters at, but caring? Never. “You should be happy so many people cared for you.”
Blue eyes focused, fire burning in their depths.
“Happy?! Happy?! I should be happy that the people I care about are hurting, suffering! You really are a cold hearted bastard aren’t you.”
“I never said that dobe. But if you weren’t here your soul would have gone anyway, they’d still be hurting. There’s nothing you can or could have done about it. You should just appreciate those people that are willing to cry for you.”
Sasuke had never heard himself speak so softly. Was that what compassion sounded like?
Naruto’s eyes soften as a tear escaped and rolled slowly down his cheek. Sasuke lifted his hand with the intention of wiping the tear away but stopped himself. When had he gotten so soft? Naruto wiped the tear away and forced a smile on his face. Sasuke didn’t like it, it looked so strained.
“Well come on then teme, lets get my stuff together so we can go back to your house.”
Sasuke nodded and went back to packing the bag as Naruto threw his belongs on the bed. His thoughts swirling around the blonde and his tears. Why had it been so hard for him to just touch the blonde? To let him know he cared and wanted to help? Sasuke knew why, he didn’t posses the emotions. He was Death he couldn’t afford to have emotions. And yet seeing that tear stain Naruto’s face hurt him more than any wound could. Why was that?
“Teme…” Sasuke lifted his head and raised an eyebrow- Uchiha for ‘Yes Dobe.’ “How did I die?”
Sasuke gulped and hoped it wasn’t audible. He’d been dreading this question since the moment Naruto had come to live with him. He still hadn’t decided if he should tell the blonde the truth- he wasn’t sure of Naruto’s reaction. Sasuke could only go on what he’d have done, and that would have been to seek revenge. A hunt for a murderer was the last thing Sasuke needed right now and yet he knew he couldn’t lie to Naruto. Not with those innocent eyes pleading with him to be honest.
“You were killed. Arsenic poisoning.”
Sasuke was ready for many things. Shouting, proclamations of revenge, tears. However he was not prepared for the quite “Oh.” that escaped Naruto’s mouth.
“Naruto. Do you have any enemies? Anyone who’d want to get rid of you?” Sasuke couldn’t keep the curiosity out of his voice, after all he couldn’t think of a single reason anyone would want to kill Naruto. Except maybe to shut him up.
Naruto rubbed his chin absent mildly as he considered the question. Finally he shrugged.
“Not that I know of. Although I did keep having this strange dream before I moved to yours about a serial killer. Could that have something to do with it?”
Sasuke considered this. He didn’t know much about murdered soul’s and what they saw. It was a possibility.
“I don’t know. What did this person look like?”
“Well I don’t really remember. They were always in the shadows. All I remember is it was a man and he had yellow eyes. Freaky huh?”
Yellow eyes? Yellow eyes? Why did they sound so familiar. Who did he know with yellow eyes? Purple rimmed yellow eyes floated through his mind and yet he couldn’t place them. Sasuke had a feeling he’d be kicking himself once he remembered. Naruto’s cheerful voice pulled him back to the present.
“Well that’s me done. Lets go teme!”
“Hn.” Sasuke stood, bags in hand. Thoughts of yellow eyes tumbled through his head, that is until Naruto began tugging at him.
“Sasuke. Can we…not go back down there.”
Sasuke nodded and took the hand that was tugging at his cloak. Leading him through the very wall they’d left through the first time. Once again they headed off into the night. Sasuke pretended he couldn’t feel the wetness of tears on his shoulder as the horse set off for his house.
Soon the two men were back inside the Uchiha’s house, sat in the living room with tea. Naruto slumped over his drink as if the world was bearing down on him, the pitiful sight of him made Sasuke want to comfort the man he’d even considered resting a hand on his shoulder. When had he gotten so caring? Naruto looked up and Sasuke was more than relieved to see the tears had stopped. Although he still had that desperate look in his blue eyes and Sasuke knew he’d have to do something.
He stood up and yanked the other man off the sofa. He dragged him down a long hallway into a small room. Sasuke gave a small smile to the blonde before rummaging around several draws. Naruto stood in silence and watched the raven haired man rifle through his belongings.
Sasuke stood, a triumphant smirk on his usually indifferent face, and presented Naruto with a small box and a white cloak. Naruto looked at it suspiciously, head tilted in confusion.
“They’re for you dobe.”
Naruto picked up the box and opened it, a small golden key lay inside it. Naruto lifted it out of the box sapphires sparkled when the light hit it, whilst it hung long golden chain. Sasuke grabbed it and hung it around the blondes neck- the sapphires complimenting his blue eyes. Naruto stared at him, lost for words again, if he kept this up Sasuke was going to have to buy him a dictionary to widen his vocabulary.
“Dobe. This is a key to the house. To each room in the house. This is your home now and this key symbolises that. You can come and go as you please, but you will always return here. This is our home and we’ll look out for one another now.”
Sasuke didn’t realise he’d even had the ability to sound so emotional. So much for not being sentimental. A large smile split Naruto’s tanned face.
“Thank you teme.”
Sasuke handed the white cloak to Naruto.
“That symbolises your Grim Reaper status. I didn’t think you’d want black- it takes a certain tall, dark and handsome look to pull it off.” Sasuke teased. Naruto nodded his head in agreement before realising he’d been insulted. He shook his fist and yelled incoherent things about ‘not looking like a corpse’. Sasuke refrained from telling him technically he was one.
Instead he let out a small chuckle as he began to leave the room intent on writing party invitations. Time to summon the Gods- wouldn’t Itachi be amused, he thought bitterly.
As he crossed the threshold he was sure he faintly heard the blonde man mummble.
“At last I’m home.”
