What to Do in the Snow

SMASH!

Ino shrieked as icy cold snow smashed against her chest and slid down the V-neck of her shirt.

“Sakura!” she exclaimed shrilly, blue eyes widening aghast at her best friend.

Sakura giggled gleefully, picking up another rather large handful of snow and packing it between her gloved hands.

“Don’t you dare!” Ino cried, pointing a finger warningly.

Sakura’s grin was pure mischief as she threw her second snowball, hitting her target dead-on yet again.

“Ohh!” Ino shrieked again, her entire body flinching in a useless attempt to get away from the cold sliding down her shirt and into her cleavage. “Sakura! We’re not children!”

Even as Ino chastised her, Sakura was packing another snowball.

“Says who?” Sakura challenged her equally-teenaged friend.

Ino narrowed her eyes as Sakura took aim again. “You’ve been hanging out with Naruto too much.”

“At least Naruto knows how to dress for the cold,” Sakura remarked, throwing her missile of snow and sticking her tongue out.

“Aaah!”

This time, the snow hit just below Ino’s neck, plastering her whole upper body in icy crystals that began to melt with her body heat—what little there was left when she was armed against the cold in a mere scarf, earmuffs, and elbow warmers.

Ino leveled Sakura with a dangerous glare, keeping her eyes on the pink haired girl as she leaned down and grabbed a handful of snow to throw at her. Sakura merely snickered in response as the snow hit her heavy winter cloak.

“What, is that the best you can do? You’re no challenge at all, Ino-pig!” Sakura declared.

Ino pointed her red, cold-numbed finger at Sakura. “Don’t you dare move a muscle, forehead-girl! I’ll be back in ten minutes!”

With that, she stomped off in the direction of her house, leaving Sakura in the middle of the snow-covered street, practically shaking in anticipation as Ino’s boots crunched angrily away.

Just as threatened, Ino returned ten minutes later, bundled in a wool, indigo coat and cable-knit mittens, her scarf and earmuffs still present, as well. Sakura smiled in greeting, immediately hurling a snowball at her now-properly-dressed friend. Again, it hit Ino’s chest, but this time the blonde merely smirked, the cold snow unable to reach her skin.

“You’d better run,” Ino said, a quiver of excitement coloring the threat in her voice.

Sakura gave an involuntary squeal and ran, Ino immediately hot on her heels.

Their chase led through most of their familiar territory in Konoha, disturbing snow and innocent passersby alike, until finally neither one could force their legs to run in the cold anymore. They collapsed as Ino put a final burst of speed to her numbing feet and tackled Sakura to the ground in the middle of an abandoned training area.

She felt Sakura shaking beneath her, and let up on her weight, worrying she’d hurt her or that the cold had become too much. But when Sakura turned over underneath her, Ino saw what her muffled ears hadn’t quite heard—Sakura’s cold-reddened face was split with a wide, laughing grin and her eyes were bright with delight.

Ino couldn’t help but laugh in return, giggles suddenly bubbling up so quickly she couldn’t stop them if she’d wanted to. Soon both of them were clutching to each other, eyes streaming tears and stomachs aching from the force of their laughter.

“S-s-stop…laughing!” Ino forced out with her laughter, her forehead pressed to the front of Sakura’s cloak as she hunched over, trying to get herself under control.

“I—I… can’t!” Sakura laughed in answer, her chest heaving beneath Ino’s forehead, her fingers clenched tightly in the upper arms of Ino’s coat.

Ino lifted her head from Sakura, hoping that separating from the feeling of her friend laughing would help her settle down. When she looked up, her laughter immediately stopped, though not for the reason she had hoped. In fact, she hardly noticed when her breath caught suddenly, leaving Sakura’s breathless giggles filling the air—though they slowly tapered off as well as Sakura noticed Ino’s gaze on her.

Sakura frowned slightly at the strange, wide-eyed expression on Ino’s face. “Ino…” she began questioningly.

But in the next instant, she forgot what she was going to say. It didn’t matter, anyway. Neither did the fact that they were both lying in the snow, or that new flakes were beginning to fall, or that Sakura’s nose was threatening to run from the cold.

All that mattered was bright eyes and cherry-red cheeks; the press of Ino’s soft lips to Sakura’s and the warmth of their breath as it intermingled.

xXx
