Thoughts of Sasuke and others are set in italic type (whole paragraph)

Naruto’s thoughts are set in bold-italic type (whole paragraph).

Sasuke kept his face impassive as he listened to Naruto’s quiet outburst, willing his eyes to avoid the boy’s muscled torso. When Naruto finished speaking, he turned on his side. Sasuke turned his head and huffed out a sigh. He frowned.

Damn it, why does life have to be so fucking complicated?

In the silence, Sasuke concentrated on what he should do, body tense, mind frustratingly blank.

On the bed, Naruto lay still, belying the furious flow of thoughts through his mind.

Why the hell did I say that? It’s not what I want, but—damn it, how can I say anything else? I don’t want to scare him off, but I also don’t want to—don’t want him to—aw, hell, this is one royally fucked scene.

As contradictions swirled behind his eyes, Naruto’s face contracted into a grimace.

Sasuke sighed again, softer this time, then put one foot on the bed and nudged it. When Naruto didn’t respond, he pushed harder.

Naruto’s eyes flipped open, but he didn’t move. Sasuke waited a moment, then shoved the bed a third time.

“Want something?” Naruto said, still not moving.

“I, uh,” Sasuke said quietly, “I’ll…stay.”

Naruto looked over his shoulder at the boy at the window.

“For now,” Sasuke added, still looking away.

Naruto turned his body, slid his elbows back to prop on them. He studied Sasuke.

I don’t know what his secret is, but I sure as hell know when someone’s been beaten. Beaten down, beaten up, physically, emotionally—the signs are all the same. Shoulders hunched, won’t look me in the eye—

At that moment Sasuke turned his head. His eyes locked onto Naruto’s, and for a moment, a needle-thin flash of pain and vulnerability shot between them. Naruto reacted as though Sasuke had reached from behind him and touched his nose. His eyes widened, head jerked back. When Sasuke saw this he immediately clamped off his emotions. Naruto thought quickly and waved his hand in front of his face.

“Damn, I hate the mosquitoes this time of year.”

Before Sasuke could move, Naruto pushed into a sitting position, then slid to the edge of the bed. He stood, walked to his closet, and found a black, cut-off tee shirt. He held it to his nose, sniffed, decided it was clean enough. He pulled it over his head and turned, looking down at his torso as he pulled the shirt taut. It fell to just below his nipples. He looked up to see Sasuke staring at his belly.

Naruto raised one eyebrow, then looked down at his stomach.

“This?” he said, rubbing his hand in a circle over the seal around his navel. “I forget it’s there, sometimes…most of the time, in fact. Yeah, there’s a story to it, but I’m not gonna tell it now.”

Naruto looked up and drew a big breath, sighed loudly. He pushed both hands through his hair, his head falling back, long blond locks flying everywhere.

Sasuke watched the black tee slide up to reveal Naruto’s dark brown nipples perched on well-developed pecs.

They’re big, and sort of puffy, too, like…like—

Sasuke swallowed.

—like my—my mom’s when I saw her getting out of the bath.

Naruto lifted his head and smiled broadly.

“Well, there’s not much of a tour to give for a one-room apartment, but I can at least point out the basics.”

Sasuke snapped his eyes up to Naruto’s face. He realized his mouth was open, and popped it shut as well. His face was suddenly hot, and he knew he must be blushing brightly, but Naruto didn’t seem to notice.

“What?”

“C’mon, I’ll show you how to get to the bathroom.

“That’s what I’m talking about!”

Naruto jabbed his finger at the manga Sasuke held, indicating Ikari Shinji, Neon Genesis Evangelion pilot 03. Shinji screamed at an invading Angel as he threw the full power of his Eva unit at it. The double-page spread focused on Shinji’s rage at bottom right, surrounded by detailed bursts of light and motion. The drawing led the eye to the upper left, where Shinji’s opponent reeled off-balance, its sixty-meter-tall frame crashing into skyscrapers in the center of Tokyo-3.

Sasuke sat cross-legged on the well-worn blue rug to the side of Naruto’s bed. As Naruto punched the page it came loose from Sasuke’s hold on it, and the manga flopped to the floor. Sasuke sighed roughly. He turned his head to hide his scowl as he picked up the book for the fourth time.

Good god, he acts like he’s eleven—even younger, maybe.

Sasuke schooled his face into a neutral expression and turned back to see Naruto’s broad smile framing bright eyes.

“Get it? Shinji’s a wimp in real life, but put him in his Eva unit and he just explodes with—”

“Natural gas?”

Sasuke’s interjection stopped Naruto cold. The boy’s eyebrows shot straight up, and the “Are you from Neptune?” look on his face prompted Sasuke to burst into laughter.

What the devil? Is he making fun of me?

Sasuke bent over, nearly touching his forehead to the floor, then straightened and fell back. The manga went into the air, Sasuke hit the rug with a whump! He kicked his legs and belly-laughed.

Naruto stared at him, unsure whether to doubt himself or his new roommate’s sanity.

Sasuke paused for breath, looked at Naruto, still frozen in surprise at Sasuke’s outburst. Sasuke continued laughing.

“Um, that wasn’t all that funny, you know.” Or clever, Naruto added silently.

“Yeah, I know,” Sasuke said, sitting up. He straightened his legs into a wide V, leaned back on his palms, fingers pointing away from him.

“But you take this stuff way too seriously,” Sasuke said, a broad grin spread across his face. “I had to break the—the, uh—”

Sasuke saw Naruto’s pained expression and quickly regretted making fun of his pastime.

“It’s, it’s cool, though,” Sasuke continued, struggling to cover his gaffe.

Naruto’s face fell. He looked down and away.

Sasuke quickly straightened and reached for the manga.

“No, really,” he said, flipping pages backward. “That scene—the one with the wide angle of the NERV command center—here it is—”

Sasuke found the page and stuck it under Naruto’s nose.

“The detail here is just awesome.”

Naruto moved eyes only to the picture, then flicked them over to check Sasuke’s face. The shy smile he saw looked honest enough.

“Y- you think so?”

“Hell, yeah. The artist went to a lot of trouble to draw that.”

“Yeah, I think so, too.”

“And the big one”—Sasuke flipped forward to the page Naruto had jabbed— “that’s total power. Must take a lot more than just pencil skills to draw manga.”

A tiny smile formed at one corner of Naruto’s mouth.

“Yeah…” he said, letting the word trail away.

Maybe…no…I don’t know…I, I—

Sasuke interrupted Naruto’s thoughts:

“Thanks for sharing these. I guess I didn’t realize…well, anyway…thanks.” He clapped Naruto on the shoulder and unfolded his legs to stand. Naruto immediately scrambled to his feet as well.

As he did, his knee bumped the scab on Sasuke’s knee. Sasuke yipped with surprise at the sudden pain and hopped back, lost his balance. Naruto tried to catch him, and both fell to the bed, arms and legs tangling as they bounced to a stop, Naruto sprawled on top of Sasuke.

Sasuke’s ill temper immediately returned.

“Get off! Get off me!”

Naruto tried to roll to one side, but Sasuke’s attempts to push him away shoved him back the other way. Naruto scooted toward the foot of the bed, away from Sasuke, his exposed abs sliding down the front of Sasuke’s grass-stained shorts. Sasuke raised a foot, trying to get it against Naruto’s chest to kick him back, but Naruto’s feet found the floor and he stood, stumbled back, before Sasuke could punch him.

“Hey, hey, hey!” Naruto shouted. “It was an accident, okay?”

It—it’s not like you don’t want it, fucker. You think I didn’t feel your hard-on when I slid off you?

“Just—just quit finding excuses to—to touch me.” Sasuke’s butt was on the edge of the bed, his feet on the floor; his upper torso was raised on elbows. As he looked up at Naruto, standing by the window, his eyes went to the boy’s tight abs, undulating as his breath slowed.

Naruto’s eyes narrowed.

“What the fuck did you just say?”

“I—I mean—”

“Hell, no. You didn’t just accuse me of—”

“I didn’t accuse you of anything.”

Naruto’s face contorted in anger.

“Unbelievable!” Naruto released his frustrations and suspicions in a blast of words. “Since the moment I’ve met you, you’ve done nothing but sulk—that, and accuse me of trying to feel you up, or—or take advantage of you.”

Sasuke kept his tone neutral.

“I haven’t said—”

“Like hell you haven’t! It’s like you’re scared to death I’m gonna rape you.”

Naruto stood with fists tight by his hips, anger in his eyes. He waited for Sasuke’s response. When the boy said nothing, he spoke.

“Well?”

“Well, what?”

“Is that the way it is?”

Sasuke turned his head, thoughts careening against hormones waking for the first time in his life.

My god, what the devil’s going on with me? I fucking know I’m not gay, but—then why am I hard? Why am I so turned on?

“It is, isn’t it?” Naruto said. “You—you’re—” his eyes widened. “No, wait. That’s not it at all. You’re afraid, aren’t you?”

Sasuke blushed brightly.

“I’m not. I may be a lot of things, but—”

“That’s not what I mean,” Naruto said, the words rushing out. “It’s not that you’re afraid of me; you’re afraid of you.”

Sasuke jerked his head back to stare at Naruto in disbelief.

“What?”

“Oh, my god,” Naruto said half to himself, a smile edging across his lips, “I should have seen it, first thing.” He shook his head slightly, chuckled softly to himself.

“What the hell are you talking about?”

Sasuke was frozen in his position: legs bent over the foot of the bed, feet on the floor, elbows behind shoulders, lifting his upper torso off the mattress.

Naruto looked up, directly into Sasuke’s eyes. He spoke gently.

“You’re gay, too. Only—only you don’t know it.”
