Interlude I

A/N: because chapter 6 was so short, i've decided to upload the first interlude as well. the interludes serve to 1) inform the reader of things going on outside of the plot that will eventually help the plot along and b) give the reader a fresh POV, rather than going through sasuke's terrible angst and emotional issues for who knows how many chapters.

as to this particular interlude, looking back at my reviews, only one person has said anything about the fox naruto gave a note to, and only one that has said _anything_ about Gaara. yay to those two people, you probably know who you are. i hope you all enjoy this respite from the deep recesses of the last uchiha's mind!

Kitsune POV

Here's to the Fox: Interlude I
_______________________________

The trees were beginning to thin out, of which the young kit was grateful. He was starting to get tired from his non-stop run to Sunagakure, but he was no ordinary kitsune and could make it just a bit more before stopping to rest.

He’d been worried that the parchment in his mouth would weaken and tear due to his saliva, but it was thick, and maybe perhaps spelled, and nothing had happened to it during the journey. Oh, he so wanted to do this right. He wanted nii-san to be proud of him.

A few hours later brought the kit to endless stretches of sand, and he jumped in the air with joy. Landing in a graceful run, he continued on to Sunagakure, his blood purring through his veins. He couldn’t wait to return home and share his adventure with his friends.

Home. He hadn’t been home in twenty-three years. Finally, finally, he could see his loved ones. Though the prejudice against his kind was probably still strong and fierce, he’d learned a few things from nii-san, and he could protect them.

In the distance, the young kitsune could just make out buildings of sand. The blazing sun projected water slicks in the sand, making the kit suddenly thirsty. But he would persevere. He had to get to Suna.

The journey seemed endless, but he finally found himself slipping through people and buildings, intent on finding the scent through all the sand. He hadn’t been here for ten years, but he was sure he hadn’t forgotten the particular scent. And it suddenly came upon him. He was passing an official looking building, noting the scent came strongest from within. Out front were shinobi of Suna, obviously guarding a very important person. The Kazekage?

He’d been in the village of Reihi, awaiting nii-san when he’d heard his voice coming from an inn’s room at the corner of the building. He felt nii-san move through the room and come out of the inn. He’d wondered who nii-san had been talking with, whose scent clung to nii-san, and stayed for a bit. Someone had begun to talk about the Kazekage not being in Suna. So, was he here now?

It made no difference. The Kazekage was not the one he was looking for. But the one he was after was in this building. These guards looked familiar to the kitsune, so he took a chance that they’d understand what he was doing there. If not, he could always get away. Walking purposefully up the steps, the young kit faced the guards. They looked down upon him, seeming not to see him, really, but then a flash of recognition crossed through one’s eyes.

“It’s you again, little one. You’ve grown so much bigger.”

“Why are you talking to a fox?”

“He used to live here. I was well acquainted with this little prankster, him and his charge.”

“Well, what has he got there?”

The man who recognized him reached down to grab the parchment from his mouth. He wouldn’t let go, but he allowed it to slide out a little so that the guard could read whom it was for.

“It looks like a message for the Kazekage.”

No! It wasn’t for the Kazekage! But he wasn’t yet old enough to speak. He could only growl and whine as he was scooped up off the ground and taken inside the building. They passed many people who all looked at him strangely, some with curiosity, others with fear. Oh yes, they remembered his nii-san, and he growled angrily in their directions. He was lightly tapped on the nose for his actions, but it didn’t hurt, so he took no offense.

“Kazekage-sama, there’s a messenger here to see you.”

“Tell him to come back later,” replied a deep, rumbling voice from within. That didn’t sound like the Kazekage. That wasn’t his scent either. What was going on?

“I think that would be a mistake, Kazekage-sama.”

There was silence, then what sounded to be an irritated sigh. “Enter.”

The doors swung open, and the kitsune eyed the man seated at the desk. It was indeed whom he’d come in search of! Was he perhaps the new Kazekage? What happened to the old one?

The Kazekage looked at him, and his eyes widened, then narrowed. The little kit was placed upon the desk, and he gently let the parchment fall from his maw. Letting his tongue hang out, he panted to regain what breath he could before he set off again for home and nii-san.

“What’s going on?” Someone, the brother, whom the kit hadn’t seen standing in the corner moved up to read over the Kazekage’s shoulder as he unfolded the message.

“Change of plans. We’re to head to Konoha.”

“Hell, we can’t just drop everything at his word! You’ve got too much to do-”

“Pick four men to escort us. We leave for Konohagakure immediately.”

“Yes, Kazekage-sama.”

The young kitsune could only yip in approval before he jumped from the desk and bolted through the door.
