For those of you who saw the chapter 'To Know,' get it out of your head. That chapter was not meant to be uploaded. It was an idea I was playing with...
Summary: Naruto returns from an S-class mission in critical condition; Shino comes later to question the blonde.
Drabble Eight - Reasons
"Heh. That was amusing..." The voice snickered. "You should've let that little girl die... trying to play hero, eh? Think that'll stop people from hating you, eh? Sorry to tell you, kid... but that isn't going to be happening anytime soon. No matter what you do..."
"Why didn't you tell me?"
It had been three days since Shino had thought the blonde to be dead. Shino shook slightly at the thought. He might have lost everything...
"I was scared..."
They were in the hospital. Naruto lay in bed, tubes and needles protruding from various parts of his body, medicine running to and fro. His eyes were closed, and his breathing was ragged... Where was the smile? Where was the laughter? Nothing, it seemed, existed of the blonde's former self. Where was the Naruto he had fallen in love with?
"So you decided to run away on some stupid mission?" Shino asked angrily. "You decide to run away on some stupid mission and come back half fucking dead?"
Naruto exploded angrily. "Why the hell does it matter anyway? I've never done anything that damn fox has done! No matter what I do, everyone still fucking hates me!"
Tears began running down his cheeks, stifled sobs began bursting forth, and all Shino could do was stare. Shino swore inwardly. Why the hell couldn't he say anything?
Silence reigned for almost an hour before Shino responded. With a hint of a smile, he grabbed the blonde's hand.
"It doesn't matter." he whispered gently. "And quit the 'everybody hates me' talk... I don't."
"Y- you don't...?"
Shino rolled his eyes. "No. I don't."
Naruto smiled weakly, and squeezed the other man's hand in gratitude. "Thanks, Shino."
