Chapter 7
She sat by his bed, watching as his chest rose and fell slowly. His eyes were shut. He might have just been sleeping. So peaceful. The well inside her overflowed with guilt and sorrow, at the fact that if she, his comrade, had tried a little harder to heal him, then he might be awake. Sakura walked out of the room, hot tears constantly flowing from her eyes.
* * * * *
Sai watched as Sakura walked out of the hospital, her face buried in her hands. After referring to his book, he concluded that something was wrong and decided to follow her. Sakura didn’t even notice him, and only until she reached her door, did he make his presence known.
“Cherry? Are you alright?”
Sakura spun round to confront the intruder. It was only Sai.
“What do you want?”
Sai was confused. According to the book, she should have replied with a simple yes or no. Had he done something wrong?”
Sakura stopped him from reaching for his book. She had almost forgotten how Sai reacted.
“I’m fine.”
Sai shook his head.
“On the contrary, your red eyes and teary face denote the opposite.”
Sakura looked up at him.
“Who am I kidding, I feel like crap!” she cried out, and burst into a fresh wave of sobs.
Almost instantly, Sai pulled her into a hug. It felt so comforting and warm. She wrapped her arms around him and clutched at his shirt.
“Cherry, am I doing the right thing?”
She nodded into his shoulder. Sai smiled gently as she rested her head in the crook of his neck. They stood in their soft embrace for what seemed like hours until Sakura broke away.
“I have to go now. My mother will be worried.”
She pecked him on the cheek and ran off.
Sai touched his cheek. What did Cherry just do? Something in the back of his mind strained for release, caged back by his childhood memories of cold and hate. He walked back to the tower, but still, that kiss, something so tiny and sweet, had stirred flickers of something deep and unyielding inside him.

Ye, Sai's nickname for Sakura has changed, because I didn't feel that 'Ugly Dog' would be appropriate here..
