Chapter 7

"I feel like I'm back at the academy again," he said lacing his fingers through hers. "Naruto, Kiba, Chouji and I were always in trouble for something." He looked over at her, she was still stairing at the door to the Hokage's office. He let her hand go and stroked the side of her face, "Temari-chan?"

She looked over at him nd removed his hand from her face. She went back to looking a the office door, as if she could see through it or was trying to will it open.

"Seriously, you can't see through that door can you?" he asked her, trying to get her to smile.

She looked over at him to respond but at that moment Lady Tsunade opened the door. He helped her to her feet and they both greeted the Fifth Hokage with a small bow.

"Temari, you may enter. Shikamaru, as you were," Tsunade said as she opened her door wider to let her in the office.

He sat back down and wondered why he wasn't allowed in, something didn't seem right. What a drag, he thought, looking up as Kankuro came around the cornner.

"Well, well lookie here, it's the deer wisperer!" Kankuro sneered at him.

"Tsch. You should talk," he didn't want to start a fight with Temari's brother, even if he did try to kill her. This is gonna be troublesome. Damnit, I had to pick a girl who has a psycho for a brother, he frowned to himself.

"Oh do tell... I should talk about what? Deer boy," came the snide reply.

Shikamaru rubbed his temples, so much for my headache going away, "This coming from a guy who plays with dolls. Tsch, get over it already, Temari's a big girl. She's more than capeable of making her own life choices, she doesn't need you to do it for her. You are more troublesome than most girls," he said, glaring over at him.

"She's coming home to the Sand. You lose," the puppet master said with an evil grin.

"What are you going on about?"

"She's coming home to stand trial for treason, for betraying Suna."

"What!?! She didn't betray anyone! You tried to fucking kill her! You should be the one on trial, you piece of garbage!" he yelled , his heart thudding in his chest.

"Yeah, you keep thinkin' that," he said and walked away.

He sat back down and pinched the bridge of his nose, fuck, he thought, I won't let that happen.

***

"WHAT? I didn't betray anyone! Gaara, you've got to believe me," she yelled, feeling the hot tears spring up in her eyes, "Gaara please, I didn't. I couldn't, I was paralyzed! How could I of walked away?" a tear slid down her cheek, "Please Gaara, you know I didn't do this." She sat down, still in shock.

Gaara looked at Tsunade, "This is why I came in person, I had a feeling she would react this way."

"Well, you did tell her she was going back to Suna to face treason charges," Tsunade said, her eyes sparkling with amusement.

"I haven't seen her cry since she was told what Orochimaru did to father. She never cries, not even when she's hurt, that tells me the truth," Gaara said, motioning over to where Temari sat with her head in her hands.

"Yes, I have to agree. I can honestly say she takes everything in stride, I've never seen her like this," Tusnade said looking over at Gaara.

"They've always been close. Her relationship with Shikamaru has sent Kankuro off the deep end. Temari, look at me," Gaara paused, as she wiped her face and looked up at him, "I know you didn't betray the village. A week before the transfer and you run off? It makes no sense, Kankuro is grasping at straws. He does miss you."

"He tried to kill me and then left me for dead! What the hell, Gaara?" she snapped at her younger brother as she jumped to her feet.

"You know Suna's punishment for treason, do you want him to die?" Gaara asked quietly.

"No, I guess not, but still, he lied to you! He tried to convince you that I ran away from the Sand. I should of died, it was pure dumb luck that Naruto and Sakura happened to come that way," she yelled, crossing her arms over her chest.

"I had ANBU following you two, mostly because I thought you might kill Kankuro, you wouldn't of died." Gaara rubbed his temples and thought, although, I'm not sure why they didn't stop him.

She started pacing, even though it was causing her to limp. She stopped when she notice Tsunade looking at her strangely. "Lady Hokage, is something wrong?" she asked.

Tsunade smiled to herself, "You're limping. Are you taking your medicine and takling it easy?"

"Uh, well, um," she felt her face go red, fuck. busted, she thought. "Kind of."

"What's that supposed to mean? Either you are or you aren't." The cornners of Tsunade's mouth twiched.

"Um... can't I talk to you in private about it?" she was pretty sure her face was on fire.

Gaara looked at his sister, who looked like she was goning to burst into flames at any moment, "Fine, I'll be in the hallway," he said, going toward the door.

***

Shikamaru looked up when he heard the door open, great, he thought, here's Gaara to tell me the bad news.

Gaara sat down next to the Konoha jounin that stole his big sister's heart. "So, what's up?" he asked.

"What the hell do you mean, 'what's up'? Kankuro tried to kill Temari and now she has to go back, so she can be put to death. I won't let that happen. You can't take her back, we'll run. You'll never see us again," Shikamaru said, knowing damn well she wouldn't ever do that.

"Kankuro is a dumbass, I see he's been running his mouth again. He thinks that's what's happening. ANBU saw everything. He's lucky she has a soft spot for him. I don't really understand it myself," Gaara said, ignoring Shikamaru's idle threats.

"Yeah, that she does. It's such a drag really. 'Cause if it were up to me, I'd fucking kill him. No offense, of course Lord Kazekage," he said, wishing he could remove that last statement from the record.

"I would kill him, so none taken," laughed Gaara, "You're too tense and call me Gaara."

"Everybody's a goddamn comedian. So what's going on in there?" he asked, pointing at the door.

Gaara shrugged, "I don't know, something about Temari limping, medicine and taking it easy. Girl crap, I guess. So, how is my sister doing?"

She's alot better, altough I saw her six days after the fact. The first couple hours were touch and go. She's lucky that Sakura was there," he frowned, "What are the odds that Sakura and Naruto would of found her?"

"Horrible odds, I'm sure. So is she really doing okay?" Gaara asked, looking concerned.

Shikamaru frowned, "Not really, she says she is, but she keeps having these really bad nightmares," he stopped and rubbed his eyes, "she's had them since they stopped sedating her at the hospital. She won't talk to anyone about them. Not me, none of her friends, not even Tsunande."

Gaara frowned and closed his eyes, "That sounds like her. I won't tell her you told me."

Shikamaru yawned and stretched.

Gaara looked over at him and laughed, "She's keeping you up too late."

Shikamaru laughed and looked at the clock, "Man, how long is this going to take? What a drag."

***

Temari watched Gaara leave the office and turned her gaze to Tsunade, "I'm not going anywhere, right?"

"No, it's been agreed that you will stay here in Konoha. Of course as a precaution, Kankuro will not be allowed into this village unescorted and there is always the chance of running inot him on a mission."

"Yes, my lady, I understand," she replied thinking, this just sucks.

***

"I do have an offer for both you and Shikamaru to discuss, Ibikki And I would like for the both of you to join ANBU. Of course, I don't need an answer yet," Tusnade smiled at her.

Temari was stunned to say the least, "I'm not sure..."

"No need to give me an answer yet. Now, tell me how you're feeling. I know how young love is, you haven't been taking it easy have you?" she gave the young jounin a knowing look.

Temari turned pink and turned away, "No ma'am, but we hadn't seen each other in 47 days."

The Fifth Hokage laughed, "It's quite understandable, and the nightmares? Have they gotten any better?"

Temari didn't want to lie, Tsunade would just ask Shikamaru, "Not as bad."

"They'll get better if talk to someone about them. If you ever want to talk you know where to find me or Shizune," the sannin offered, searching for the truth on the Suna jounin's face, "You look like you haven't slept in days. You're sure you're okay?"

"Yes ma'am."

"Very well, you may go."
