Shikamaru was a very lazy person, but he saved all his energy on meticulous control. He was what most people refer to as a control freak, but he was good at what he did for a reason. He could also kill you with his reflex alone, but he wasn’t bragging. This was one time Sasuke was glad of Shikamaru’s control. The man was driving at manic speeds, but they still hadn’t hit anyone and the ride was actually really smooth. It was only when he looked outside that he saw just how quickly the buildings were being left behind.
“Who called you?” Sasuke asked relieved but unable to show it. He couldn’t be when so much was going on. Shikamaru sighed as though answering was the biggest pain in the world.
“My father. Kakashi told him that Neji was at the police station saying something about Kyuubi. I wouldn’t have believed it if I didn’t see that bastard for myself.” It was actually more than what Sasuke had expected him to say. They got to the police station in record time. A drive that took Neji almost fifteen minutes took Shikamaru less than five.
Stopping in front of the police station, Sasuke saw Neji still outside with Kakashi. At Kakashi’s hand signal to stop Sasuke looked around. At the sign that it was safe, he stepped out, taking Naruto from Gaara as the redhead struggled to get out of the car with the limp weight. He carried the blonde bridal style inside the police station disregarding the strange looks he received from the people there. Kakashi remained outside with Shikamaru at his side while Neji stayed in his car, planning the best route to get Naruto out and unnoticed by Kyuubi or his men…and waiting for Iruka to get there.
Shikamaru’s brain worked ten times faster than the average person and he knew that Kyuubi had seen him; it didn’t take a genius to figure it out. Apparently it did.
“I have to change cars.” Shikamaru said to Kakashi in a low voice, knowing that Kyuubi was probably on his way.
“I’ll see you later. What ever you do, don’t let Naruto or anyone else out of the police station until I get back.” Shikamaru instructed and tore off at tire squealing speeds, leaving gravel shooting up in his wake.
Kakashi stared after him perplexed. The car was pretty loud as it was the only vehicle around for a few blocks—it was a police station, not a hang out. It was only a few minutes later that he heard another car engine coming towards him. It was the same black car that had followed Neji before. Seeing that nothing had changed from the last time the car had been there, the passengers of the black car continued on their way, Kakashi’s mismatched hawk eyes staring after them.
“Shikamaru must have figured out that Kyuubi probably sent his men here to see if the car he saw had Naruto in it.” Neji thought aloud, the silver haired man’s silent nod of understanding an understatement to his awe. Shikamaru never stopped impressing him. The kid always thought at least ten steps ahead and had all the answers to everything. He was excellent at shougi and go because of this.
“But what I don’t get it why Kyuubi is back. To kill Naruto?” Sure Neji’d had some scuffles with the main branch of his family, the pompous bastards, but it seemed like a childish jealousy compared to Kyuubi’s hatred for Naruto. Neji had a hard time thinking about someone hating their own blood to the point of massacre.
Because that’s what it was. Kyuubi had massacred his parents and had made his brother witness their death. He later kidnapped Naruto and tortured and raped the nine year old until he thought he had killed his brother. But fortunately, Kyuubi had failed at killing Naruto. Is that why he was back? To finish what he had started? To make sure Naruto was dead? Kyuubi was insane. He had to be. He seemed in control of everything, but the way his eyes went from ocean blue to demonic red in a nanosecond showed the imbalance in the older blonde’s head.
Neji wanted to know so many things, but nothing would be discovered until they got Naruto far away and they caught Kyuubi. Kakashi continued to stare after the car long after it was gone, no doubt trying to remember the license plates that was no doubt stolen; Kyuubi was insane, not stupid.
Shikamaru arrived ten minutes later with Iruka, the latter jumping out of the car and running to Kakashi’s arms.
“Tell me its not true, ‘kashi. Tell me Shika lied and Kyuubi is dead or off somewhere, but not after our
Naruto.” The man was on the verge of tears for the blonde who was like a son to him.
“I’m afraid Shikamaru is right, ‘Ruka. Kyuubi returned and he’s after Naruto again. He went to the club they were at. Fortunately Sasuke, Gaara and Neji were with him and brought him here—”
“He’s here?!” The frantic man demanded, interrupting him mid sentence.
“Yeah, he’s inside with Gaara and Sasuke.” The other had peeled away from his arms before he finished talking and the silver haired man was left to sigh warily after his husband.
Neji stared after Iruka and followed Kakashi as the detective went after his frenzied mother hen-like husband, knowing the other would probably suffocate Naruto in a vicious hug and demand that he go away so he could be safe, even though it would tear at the elementary school teacher’s heart as he told his son, in everyway except biologically, to leave.
They found Gaara leaning against a wall, probably sulking—and if one looked closely, it looked like he was pouting—as Sasuke held a still sleeping Naruto in his arms. Apparently, Iruka didn’t have it in him to wake the blonde and have him face this cruel reality as the blonde whimpered, nightmares consuming his thoughts. Iruka stared at the blonde and whimpered slightly, fearful for Naruto and knowing that he would never be able to live in peace as long as Kyuubi was after him.
“‘Kashi, we have to get him far away. Kyuubi won’t stop at anything to get to him. He’s not safe.” It seemed that what Iruka was saying was redundant, but there were underlying messages he was trying to send his lover. They knew the real reasons why Kyuubi had gone mad and tried to kill his brother in a bout of righteous credence. Gaara saw the meaningful looks Iruka was giving Kakashi and knew there was something much bigger than “Kyuubi’s crazy” going on.
“What’s going on?” Gaara asked with his usual blunt tone, not liking beating around the bush, looking pointedly at Kakashi, knowing the silver haired man wouldn’t sugar coat anything.
“Kyuubi is after Naruto, is what’s going on!” Iruka screeched. Everyone in the room turned to look at him, even the janitor in the corner heard him over the music blaring in his headphones as he kept to his own little world. Everyone gave Iruka a pointed look and the man toned it down a little, but his eyes were still worriedly fixated on Naruto.
“No. There’s something more going on. Something you’re not telling us.” Gaara, said adamantly giving a Look that could bear holes through cement.
“Kakashi.” He said expectantly. Shikaku had appeared out of nowhere but had stayed silent in the shadows, no one really paying him any attention. It was now that he spoke,
“You might as well tell them.” Shikaku said, already knowing the story, having been a really close friend to Kakashi and somewhat Iruka for over the past so many years. Kakashi sighed. He motioned with his fingers for everyone to follow him to another room, this one with one door and a two way glass on one side, the other side of the glass appeared to be an interrogation room. By this time everyone had their eyes intent on the silver haired man, even Shikamaru was waiting for a reply, granted it was still with a slightly less bored look, but at least he was looking.
“No. You can’t tell them.” Iruka whispered anxiously, fearing the worst for Naruto. If they found out they wouldn’t support Naruto like they had before they knew. They would turn their backs on him, be repulsed—probably even join Kyuubi’s campaign.
But really, did Iruka think so lowly of them.
Apparently—anything to protect Naruto like a lioness protecting her cub.
“We have to tell them ‘Ruka.” Kakashi reasoned.
“No.” The other whispered frightfully.
“Tell us what?” Sasuke began getting impatient.
“Can someone just tell us already.” Gaara snapped, tired of the back and forth, the fear in Iruka’s face making him grow anxious to find out.
Kakashi sighed.
“Tell you what happened all those years ago that made Kyuubi lose his mind.”
