A/N: These aren’t all connected, but a few of them can be. Basically, I think there are three or four different stories here. Those that you can make a connection with aren’t necessarily in chronological order (though some may be).
01. My December – Linkin Park
It had been years since the last time he’d seen Naruto. Years since Naruto had—finally—given up. Yet here they were, staring at each other from across a snow-covered road in a tiny, unsuspecting village on the outskirts of nowhere. Naruto’s cheeks and nose were red, snow floating down to settle on his uncovered hair. His eyes were too bright as he looked back at Sasuke, and Sasuke suddenly felt like there were words left unspoken for years—explanations, apologies, promises—caught somewhere between his chest and his mouth.
02. Dumb – Nirvana
Sasuke didn’t know what he was doing here, in this bar, with people he barely knew anymore. People he’d never even considered friends, and who obviously didn’t see him as one either, if the looks he kept getting shot were anything to go by. He didn’t belong here anymore, and his jaw clenched with the thought, muscles tensing as he prepared to get up and leave.
But Naruto slung his arm over Sasuke’s shoulder, greeting everyone jovially. In the back of his mind, he kept telling himself this was stupid—he was stupid, to agree to come hang out with all his “old friends” in Konoha. But Naruto’s arm remained on his shoulder, and Sasuke stayed. He drank. His jaw relaxed and he drank more. And if his lips twitched up higher when Naruto talked, it was simply because everything felt so funny right then. And if he leaned a little more against Naruto’s body, it was simply because he was drunk. And if he forgot all the reasons he didn’t belong, all the reasons he should hate these people rather than laugh with them, and allowed himself to feel happy for once, no one would remember tomorrow. They’d all be hungover just like him.
03. Dead memories – Slipknot
“We can’t ever be the same again,” Sasuke tells the boy looking expectantly—pleadingly—at him. “I’m not the same person I was then. I don’t feel the same things—I can’t.”
Naruto grits his teeth and grabs the front of his shirt. Slams him back against the wall. His lips and teeth and tongue demand more than apathy from Sasuke, and Sasuke almost thinks he remembers the way it felt back then, before everything changed. Before he remembered he was broken, and getting close to someone wouldn’t heal him; it would only break him more.
04. Forgotten Children – Tokio Hotel
The world had changed since the war, yet some things never would. Always, it was the innocent who suffered most, Naruto thought as he looked around the ruins of yet another village. The buildings were crumbling, and the streets were filled with homeless. Old men staring listlessly, women holding crying babies, trying their best to sate their demand for food from mother’s breast, children running in the streets and alleys, searching for abandoned scraps or some kind of shelter.
A child came up to him, tugging on the edge of his jacket. Her face was dirty and her clothes were raggedy, but her eyes had not yet been dimmed by the hardship, and she smiled up at him. He couldn’t help but smile back, especially when the large gap from having lost her front teeth showed through her wide grin.
“Are you here to help us, ojisan?”
Naruto was left momentarily speechless after being called an old man, but Sasuke’s voice took his place.
“Yeah. We’re here to help.”
Sasuke’s voice was so full of bottled emotion—nostalgia; remembrance; regret—Naruto had to look at him. The look of fierce determination suddenly alight in those dark eyes made Naruto’s heart simultaneously flutter and clench.
05. The Ice Is Getting Thinner – Death Cab for Cutie
After all that had happened, he finally found himself back here, at the entrance to the Uchiha complex—the compound; the ghetto; the quarantine. This place that had been his home for thirteen years. That had housed his entire family—the family that no longer existed, thanks to the village they’d lived in; protected.
This place was his home—the only real one he’d ever known. But it wasn’t. He could never again connect those childishly naïve feelings of comfort and protection to this place. It was a graveyard—even more now than it had been when he’d left it behind so long ago.
“Are you really going to…” a familiar, boyishly raspy voice cautiously broke the silence.
Sasuke glanced over. Concerned blue eyes looked back at him. For a moment, he hardened his features against the vulnerability that wanted to creep up on him every time those damn eyes tried to see into his soul, but then Naruto squeezed his arm, and Sasuke looked closer. Beneath that concern—that look he’d taken for pity, or perhaps worry at his fragility—there was some sort of understanding.
Sasuke frowned lightly at the fluttering that filled his insides suddenly, ignoring it as he nodded and formed the seals.
His fire formed a dragon that swept through the complex, devouring everything in sight. As his ears filled with the sound of flames licking wood and stone crumbling, and smoke filled the air, Sasuke finally closed his eyes and breathed a sigh of relief.
As he and Naruto turned to leave the village they’d both once called home, he was grateful for the rain that started to fall. It would hide his tears.
06. The Distance – Live
As they leapt through the trees, Naruto kept finding himself behind Sasuke, watching his back as he jumped from branch to branch. It made his heart clench in too familiar a way, but soothed him at the same time. If he’d been in front, he would no doubt have kept looking behind him to make sure Sasuke was still there. He’d been searching for so long, always a moment too late, that it was hard to believe Sasuke was finally here, with him, and going to stay that way. He felt a sudden desperation to catch up— to close the gap—but every time he managed it, he again began to lag behind, keeping Sasuke’s back in his direct line of sight.
But with the next leap, Sasuke stopped on his branch, looking back at Naruto expectantly. Naruto blinked and jumped over to him. A smirk he couldn’t remember seeing for years suddenly graced Sasuke’s lips, and Naruto looked down at their hands as pale fingers entwined with his.
Sasuke cocked his head in the direction they were heading, and raised his eyebrow questioningly. And, together, they leapt away, and Naruto’s heart and worries suddenly felt so light, it was like they were flying.
07. New Soul – Yael Naim
Losing his eyesight had been devastating at first, and returning to Konoha after such a thing had felt like an admittance of defeat—he was a puppy with its tail between his legs, despite all the damage he’d dealt them and their “Hokage” before finally allowing Naruto to drag him back.
Now, though, somehow he couldn’t help but find it funny. Rather than a repentant puppy, he was more like a newborn kitten. For all his training and superior skills gained through birthright, he felt like the rug was pulled out from under him every time he would forget his new handicap and behave as if he still had his sight, only to stumble, run into a wall, or other such humiliating acts.
And every time, it seemed to be Naruto who was there to steady him, or give him a hand up. And rather than the scathing remark Sasuke thought should have been there, there was a gentle squeeze of his hand accompanying a warm chuckle, and a soft reassurance meant for his ears alone. And rather than push his former best friend away, angry at his presumptions, Sasuke found himself accepting Naruto’s help as if he were a completely new person.
Perhaps he could be.
08. The Ghost of You – My Chemical Romance
Sasuke stood at the head of Madara’s statue, staring down into a waterfall he hadn’t seen for years. He looked across at the other statue—the First Hokage. An annoying, orange-clad blond should be there, calling him an asshole and a bastard, promising this would be the time he finally brought him back home, and grinning at him—feral yet friendly.
But he wasn’t. Naruto would not come this time. He couldn’t. Because of Sasuke, Naruto would never be there again.
Somehow, it seemed only fitting to Sasuke that when he finally realized he had a home with Naruto, he wouldn’t be able to take comfort in that home. The only comfort he would find now was at the bottom of that waterfall, in a watery abyss that had watched him tear his heart apart and leave it—for life or death—on the bank. Once he was there, maybe he would see Naruto again.
He took several steps back, glared calculatingly at the edge, ran, and leapt off. The cursed seal was gone, so he didn’t sprout wings but instead plummeted down with open arms.
09. 1000 Meere – Tokio Hotel
“I know you think I’m crazy for chasing you so long,” Naruto whispered desperately against Sasuke’s ear, every muscle in his body tensed as he held the struggling boy—man—to the ground. “Everyone does.” Naruto chuckled despite himself, “And maybe I am. But it doesn’t matter. Know why, Sasuke?”
He lifted his head to gaze into Sasuke’s dark, glaring eyes. Normally they looked so flat, but now, as they caught the light of the moon, Naruto had the sudden sensation he could fall into them and drown.
“I think you’re chasing me, too.”
Sasuke growled at him, a scathing retort at the tip of his tongue, but as Naruto suddenly leaned down, letting his breath breeze across Sasuke’s parted lips, his eyes intense and unblinking, Sasuke found himself swallowing it back unexpectedly.
“You just haven’t realized it yet.”
10. It’s All Too Much – The Beatles
Sasuke swallowed harshly as Naruto stared up at him—so trusting and expectant; open and waiting. He knew he didn’t deserve it, yet all the same, Naruto was his. The intensity of finally thrusting into his warm, willing body could never even compare to the intensity in those blue eyes, or the way Naruto’s moans and pants of encouragement—the way he held onto him almost ferociously, pulling him in more—made Sasuke completely breathless and disoriented.
For a moment, he thought he couldn’t take it. It was too much, all of this—Naruto’s trust; Naruto’s love; Naruto’s body—and the things it all made Sasuke feel. He wanted to look away—to push away—but at the same time he couldn’t—wouldn’t let himself even if he could. For whatever reason, Naruto still wanted him—who was Sasuke, now, to deny him? Especially when he could finally admit he wanted Naruto, too.
So he didn’t turn away, but gave himself over to Naruto’s passion, letting himself drown blissfully in it.
