Chapter Seventy-Three

Chapter Seventy-Three

Once the party arrived in Konoha everyone began to settle back into their usual routine . . . everyone except Kakashi that is. His routine had, up until now, consisted of running missions of one sort or another . . . and having no outlet for his pent up energy was taking a toll on the normally reserved man. Add to that his continued desire to escape and the ever stoic Ibiki was at his wits end.

“Hokage-sama I need a favor.” the interrogator requested as soon as he walked through the office doors.

“What can I do for you today, Ibiki?” a tired Iruka replied with a fleeting grin.

“I need you to assign someone to watch 'kashi for me.” the scarred man admitted, “I'm too distracted to be of any use to you this way.”

“You know he'll figure it out?” Genma supplied helpfully.

“I know . . . but at least I won't have to worry that he'll disappear on me the minute my back is turned.” Ibiki grumbled, “He's doing everything he can to back out of his promise.”

“What promise?” the Rokudaime asked curiously.

“I made him promise to give me a year to make him fall in love with me.” the interrogator reluctantly admitted, “But he's so hung up on what he can't do he's refusing to allow himself to enjoy anything.”

“I understand how you feel Ibiki, really I do.” the Hokage explained, “But it wouldn't be fair to Hatake-san . . . the last thing I want is for him to think we don't trust him, and that's certainly how he'd view it if I have him followed.”

“Can you at least make sure I'm notified if he leaves the village?” the scarred man requested stiffly, “I'm sure that won't bother him.”

“Only because he won't know about it.” Iruka snapped back. “Look, I know you're upset about everything that's happened . . . but I'm not going to let you make it worse.”

“I'll be in my office, thank you for your assistance Hokage-sama.” the interrogation master replied coldly, “I appreciate your willingness to help.”

“I didn't mean it that way.” the Rokudaime groused, “There's no need to get angry with me.”

“Why don't you go have a talk with Kurenai . . . maybe she can give you some ideas.” Genma suggested tentatively, “After all, they spend a lot of time together.”

“That's not a bad idea.” Ibiki agreed, “I need to talk to Asuma anyway, maybe I'll head over to their house.”

Kakashi, meanwhile, was on a mission of his own. He'd been staking out his target ever since returning to the village and, after careful surveillance, was ready to make his move. “Excuse me, Aburame-san,” he began deferentially as he appeared in front of a startled group of chuunin, “May I have a word with you please?”

“Certainly, Hatake-san.” Shino replied politely, allowing the older man to grasp his arm and teleport them to a more private location.

“What can I do for you?” the bug-wielder asked curiously once they were alone.

“Are you involved with anyone Aburame-san?” the copy-nin asked boldly, wishing to confirm what he had guessed at from his observations.

“No, I am not.” Shino answered quietly, “There aren't many here in Konoha interested in an involvement with our clan . . . most people are uncomfortable knowing we're human hives. Why do you ask?”

“I find myself in an awkward situation.” Kakashi explained, “I am . . . unable to perform sexually, due to injuries I suffered in Suna. I am looking for someone to take my place.”

“You want me to have sex for you?” Shino asked with disbelief.

“I want you to get involved with someone so they will forget about me.” the copy-nin clarified, “I've thought about it very carefully, and I believe the two of you would make a good match.”

“I hardly think any woman would find me an adequate substitute for someone like you, Hatake-san.” the kikaichu vessel politely demurred, “Although I am flattered you would consider me.”

“It's not a woman.” the copy-nin declared softly, “Does that change your mind?”

“I am . . . interested in hearing what you have to say.” Shino decided, “Who did you have in mind Hatake-san?”

“Call me Kakashi.” the silver-haired nin replied with a smile. “Do you know Morino Ibiki?”

“The totally intimidating head of T&I?” the younger man asked in disbelief, “Please tell me you're kidding.”

“He's really very sweet.” the copy-nin insisted, “Just let me tell you why, it won't take long.”

“I have time,” Shino decided, “and it can't hurt to listen.”

“Wonderful.” Kakashi declared wistfully as he sat down and gestured for his guest to do the same, “Please, make yourself comfortable.” The bug wielder nearly passed out from surprise when the silver-haired man pulled down his ever-present mask, revealing a strikingly handsome face, marred only by the long scar through his sharingan.

An hour later the copy-nin's story finally wound to a close, and he looked up to see the younger man's reaction, steeling himself for the rejection he anticipated. Yet again he was surprised when he saw that the reclusive Aburame had shed his concealing coat and dark glasses and was watching him closely. “I am sorry Kakashi-san.” Shino ventured when the jounin finished, “I had no idea such things were going on here in the village.”

“So . . . are you interested?” the silver-haired man carefully shifted the discussion away from himself, “You could come to dinner tonight.”

“I still don't think I'm much of a substitute . . . you are a very good looking man Kakashi,” the bug wielder replied slowly, “people are put off by my scars.”

“You honestly think Ibiki will be bothered by a few scars?” the copy-nin declared wryly. “If you're not interested you can just say so.”

“No . . . I'm probably crazy, but I'm interested.” Shino decided, “I'm tired of being alone.”

“Aren't we all?” Kakashi sighed, “”Here's the address,” he continued, passing over a small piece of paper, “Seven o'clock . . . and wear civilian clothes.”

As soon as the copy-nin disappeared Shino raced to find his teammates, desperate for advice on just what he should do. When he filled them in on the situation they both looked at him like he had lost his mind. “Morino Ibiki . . . ha, ha very funny.” Kiba roared, clutching his sides and rolling on the ground at the thought of the two overly-stoic men together.

“I am serious Kiba.” the bug wielder insisted, “I need advice on what to wear.”

“Maybe you should talk to Kurenai-sensei.” Hinata suggested tentatively, “She knows more about this sort of thing than we do.”

“You're probably right.” Shino decided, “I'll head over there now.”

After Ibiki left the Hokage's office he headed across the village and soon was knocking on Asuma and Kurenai's door. “Ah, Morino-san,” the bearded jounin said with a warm smile, “please, come in. What can I do for you today?”

“I have a plan and I need your help.” the interrogator declared, “Kurenai's too . . . do you guys have a few minutes?”

“Of course, have a seat and let me go grab the little woman.” Asuma urged, turning to go in search of his wife . . . only to find her standing directly behind, tapping her foot in annoyance.

“I am NOT a little woman 'suma.” she declared angrily.

“Sorry dear.” her husband apologized as he lit another cigarette, “Ibiki wants to talk to us.”

“How's Kakashi doing . . . is he settling in alright?” the kunoichi asked worriedly.

“Not really.” the scarred man admitted mournfully, “that's why I'm here.” he quickly ran the details of what he was proposing, relaxing a bit when they both seemed to approve of the idea.

“I'll check back with you in a few days.” Ibiki proclaimed, “Thank you both for your help.”

“It's all going to work out . . . just you wait and see.” Kurenai declared confidently, “Don't worry, it's a wonderful idea and I'm sure it will do the trick.”

“I hope you're right.” the worried interrogator mused, so wrapped up in his thoughts he nearly ran over the slender young man waiting by the door. “Excuse me, Aburame-san.” he murmured, “I was just leaving.”

Kurenai watched curiously as the bug-wielder's face blushed scarlet at the comment, not a reaction she expected from the stoic Aburame. “Shino, is everything alright?”

“I need your advice sensei.” the clan heir offered, “About how to dress for a date.”

“You've come to the right place.” the kunoichi stated with a sly smile, “Come in, I'll get you some tea and you can tell me all about the mystery woman who's caught your eye.”

The petite woman grabbed his arm and practically yanked him through the door in her excitement, already babbling about flowers and candy . . . and Shino's last thought as the door shut behind him was that maybe this wasn't the smartest idea after all.
