Breath of Life

Kisame waited impatiently outside the med unit. He stared at his feet blankly. If only he had come home earlier, if only he hadn’t stopped to get Iruka that gift…

Kisame reached into his pocket and pulled out the jointed dolphin charm he had gotten from the local shrine. He stared blankly at it. It had seemed so important when he got it. Now, it was just a stupid nick nack. He stared at it, anger rising inside him.

He would skin Hidan alive every day that he lived. Nothing could take this away, undo what was done.

The door opened and Konan came out, peeling bloody gloves from her hands.

“I think he’s going to pull through…” She said softly. Kisame stood. Zetsu sat up, and Tobi lifted his masked face from his hands.

“Can we go in and see him?” Tobi asked, his voice suddenly very serious.

Konan shook her head. “No, only one at a time for now. Kisame…” Kisame pushed past the woman and opened the door.

Iruka looked like an angel with his hair fanned out across the pillow. A breathing mask was over his perfect face and a heart rate monitor beeped faithfully by his side. Kisame stood there, staring.

“Iruka…I’m sorry…” He felt tears welling up inside him and he fell to his knees, taking Iruka’s hand in between his and kissing the fingertips. “I’m so sorry…” He echoed, tears falling freely down his face. He heard the door open again and looked up to see Konan. Her blue eyes were cast downward.

“Kisame…I’m sorry, this is my fault…I should have asked Pei…Leader-sama send Hidan and Kakuzu…I should have kept a better eye on him…”

Kisame shook his head, touching Iruka’s face gently. “No, Konan-sama, it’s not your fault…Hidan is a monster…”

Konan swallowed hard and nodded. There was a shared silence between them as Kisame sat by the bed and Konan stood in the doorway. After what seemed like forever, Konan left them alone without a word.

Kisame looked down, his heart aching and his eye’s brimming with tears. So much had been lost, Iruka would never be the same…and it was all Hidan’s fault…

Kisame felt the anger rising inside him once again and his hands shook. In a day or so, Hidan would heal from the fatal wounds, and be walking around as if nothing happened. But not Iruka. Iruka would be wounded, not only physically, but emotionally, for the rest of his life.

Kisame wanted to kill Hidan, to haunt his movements for the rest of his natural life.

Iruka stirred on the bed but did not wake. His face contorted and he appeared to be trapped in an inescapable nightmare.

Kisame snapped away from his thoughts and stroked Iruka’s cheek.

“It’s okay, koi (1), I’m here…” He kissed away the silent, heated tears that streaked down his lover’s face. The mere sound of Kisame’s voice seemed to still Iruka’s fears and soon he had ceased his nightmares and calmed.

Kisame stared down at the man. He…didn’t know…he really felt for Iruka, but…he couldn’t say. It was too soon to say he loved him…but…

He wanted Iruka to be safe…somewhere untouched by this…nightmare… Kisame pondered these thoughts, clutching Iruka’s slim brown hand in between his own large, pale blue ones. He knew where he would be safe, but it meant that he would never be able to see him again… He let go of Iruka’s soft hand and stood up.

It was for the better. Iruka would go back to Konoha…

Kisame opened the door slowly.

“Konan-sama…Itachi…I need to speak with you…”

Iruka woke to the feeling of Kisame’s hand on his face.

“Hmmm, Kisame…you’re back…” he whispered. Kisame smiled sadly down at his lover.

“I’m sorry, Iruka…” Kisame said, kissing his cheek gently.

Iruka looked down. “No…It’s not your fault…I should have been more alert. I should have fought back harder…”

“Iruka, there was nothing you could have done…”

Iruka was quiet again. Itachi opened the door.

“Kisame…Konan just finished speaking with leader-sama…”

“I’ll be right back.” Kisame said, brushing the hair away from Iruka’s forehead and kissing his temple. He left and Itachi sat down on the foot of the bed, with his back to Iruka. The room was quiet for a very long time. When Itachi finally spoke, Iruka tensed, but the word that came were un expected.

“You’ll blame yourself for a very long time… You’ll hate…” He said quietly. “I know…I’ve been there…”

It took a few moments for Iruka to register what Itachi was saying.

“You will want to destroy him…for doing this to you…but he never meant any of this. Trust me. He may look like a monster…but people fail to see who he truly is…”

“Itachi-san…who are you talking about? Kisame? I don’t blame him…I…I care a lot about him…I could never hate him…”

Itachi stood.

“As long as you realize who the real monster is, and understand, you lack the strength to bring him down. No one can take him down.” Itachi stood up and left. Iruka stared up at the ceiling, waiting for something to happen. He could now feel the dull ache in his lower extremities. He moaned, leaning back into the pillows. He could never forget what happened, but he could try. He closed his eyes and heard Kisame and Itachi come back in with Konan in tow.

“You guy’s be careful. I don’t want his injuries to open up again.” She whined from behind Itachi’s black clad shoulder. Kisame sat down on one side of Iruka while Itachi sat emotionlessly on the other.

“Iruka…” Kisame said, touching the brunette’s jaw. “I…I’ve been thinking…you’re not safe here…” Kisame’s voice hitched in his throat. Iruka touched Kisame’s hand to his cheek.

“So…we’re re-locating you…to somewhere safer.” Konan said softly.

“What? Where? What about Kisame?” Iruka asked, trying to get up. Itachi put his hands on Iruka’s shoulders and pushed him back on the bed.

“Just try to relax, Iruka-sensei…” Iruka couldn’t help but stare as Itachi activated his Sharingan on the schoolteacher. Iruka’s muscles relaxed as his brown eyes fluttered gently shut. He let out a soft sigh at he slumped forward into Kisame’s arms.
