The Price of Power

So as you may or may not have noticed I finally got round to naming my chapters. Yayyy! But all I could come up with is sucky names. Boooo! (And yes I shamelessly took this chapter name from the Anime =p)

Enough of that though, here's the next chapter.

Chapter 8

Sasuke’s bike screeched into a small parking lot. Gravel crunched beneath the wheels as he came to a stop alongside a bright, orange car that he could only assume belonged to Naruto. The car was empty. The raven sighed as he removed his helmet and took in the surroundings. Jagged hills of red dirt littered the landscape, covered in a sea of grass and weeds. In the distance a large cliff loomed over the site, the moon behind it coating it in a silver lining. Metal fences surrounded the bottom of the cliff, blocking off the exit to an old network of caves. There was no blond in sight.

After placing his helmet on the back of his bike Sasuke slid skilfully down one of the large dirt mounds towards the cave entrance. The metal fences that had barricaded the entrance were pulled apart. A metal chain laid nearby, cut in half, along with a pair of bolt cutters. Sasuke knelt down to pull a small dagger from a hidden sheath against his right ankle. He cautiously entered the cavern, keeping his free arm close to the left wall. Water dripped from the ceiling, splashing as it hit the small puddles that formed in the uneven floor. Up ahead small torches pierced the darkness, flickering with the wind that howled into the cave.

“Looks like someone made themselves at home down here.” Sasuke muttered as he approached a split in the path. Both paths seemed identical, dimly lit with no distinguishing features; going with his instinct the raven chose to go right. The path soon turned sharply to the left. Putting his back to the wall Sasuke peered around the corner. The narrow passage had several wooden doors on both sides. Still no signs of any life. Sasuke moved to round the corner; he froze as the sound of a glass breaking came from the nearest room. Keeping very still he listened carefully. A soft humming sound could be heard in the distance. A minute passed and other than the occasional dripping of water and the crackle of burning torches there was nothing else to be heard.

Sasuke tiptoed slowly to the room from which the sound had come. Seeing the door was slightly ajar he peeked in. Inside the faintly lit room there were tables, littered with test tubes and various tools. There was no sign of whoever or whatever had made the sound. The raven braced himself as he barged through the door, his dark eyes scanning the room quickly. Sensing movement behind him Sasuke turned quickly. He swung at the figure with his dagger grazing its right arm and eliciting a sharp hiss before the body flew into him. The impact knocked Sasuke back into a wall, dazing him momentarily and causing him to drop the dagger. A fist was launched at his face. Using the momentum of the punch against his opponent the raven reversed their positions, pinning the slightly smaller person against the wall. Sasuke looked up to meet the face of his attacker, he both cursed and mentally thanked god when angry, blue eyes met his own.

“What the fuck, bastard?!” Naruto growled. “Let go of me!”

“Hn, idiot. You attacked me first.” Sasuke let go of the blond. “What were you thinking coming here alone? Surely you must’ve realised this was a trap.”

“Well I was fine until someone sliced my arm with a knife.”

“Dagger.” Sasuke corrected him as he knelt down to pick up the weapon, noting the blood that decorated it.

“What?”

“Never mind, are you hurt?”

Naruto pulled a small flashlight from the pocket of his loose fitting orange and black trousers. He shone the light at his arm. There was a fair amount of blood, though the wound was now nothing more than a shallow cut; one of the perks of being a Jinchuuriki, one that didn’t go unnoticed by the raven. “I’m fine, it’s only a flesh wound.”

Seeing that the blond was more than fine Sasuke turned to take in the rest of the room, which was mostly empty. Rows of shelves adorned the back wall, each holding jars of mysterious fluids or powders, and a large chest sat neatly in the back corner. Sasuke made his way over to the corner. His hands fumbled at the lid before finding two metal clasps and flipping them open. As he lifted the lid a blinding light spilled into the room and a chill diffused from inside. He squinted at the light, making out racks of test tubes, each containing a suspicious red liquid.

“What is it?” The blond peered over Sasuke’s shoulder, who was now picking up a tube and swishing it from side to side.

“Looks like blood.”

“Eh? So is this like a food storage or something?” The raven turned to glare at Naruto.

“Are you really that stupid?” Sasuke paused for a moment. “Actually, don’t answer. If they were gonna drink it they’d store it in something bigger than test tubes, like blood packs. It’s probably some kind of research.”

“I wonder what they’re researching.” Naruto scratched his head.

With any luck it’ll be a cure for stupidity Sasuke thought to himself. “Where are they getting the power to run a refrigerated unit anyway?”

“There’s a huge generator further down this passage.”

“Anything else down there?”

Naruto shook his head. “The rest of the rooms are virtually empty and it’s a dead end.”

Sasuke replaced the test tube and closed the lid on the chest. “What about that other path back near the entrance?”

“I haven’t had the chance to check yet.”

“Okay, let’s go check it out.” The raven moved to the door and opened it slowly, checking for any movement before stepping outside. Naruto slid a hand under his waistband and pulled out a Colt 45, earning him a surprised look.

“What? You don’t carry a gun?”

“I’ve never needed one.” Sasuke smirked arrogantly.

Naruto pouted as he clicked off the safety and gripped the gun in both hands, aiming it at the floor in front of him. Cocky bastard.

The duo made their way back towards the entrance and down the second path, with the blond following behind the slightly taller man. The narrow passage twisted and turned as it descended slowly. A vivid light soon made itself known around the next corner, dancing against the jagged walls. Sasuke pressed his back to the wall and signaled for the blond to stop. Glancing around the corner revealed a large cavern, torches decorated every wall, the flickering light reflected in a small pool of water at the back of the room. In front of the pool stood a young man, his hands clasped behind his back. His silver hair was tied back into a short ponytail that barely reached his shoulders. He wore a short-sleeved purple shirt, which seemed to glimmer under the light of the flames, tucked into a pair of dark slacks.

Turning back towards Naruto he held up a single finger. The blond nodded, acknowledging that there was a single opponent in the next room.

“I wondered how long it would be before you got here.” The voice echoed, startling them. “Lord Orochimaru has been expecting you.” Both Sasuke and Naruto walked slowly into the cavern, the blond with his gun aimed at the man as he turned to face them. The front of his hair was cut shorter than the rest and parted in the center. A pair of round glasses rested halfway down his nose. “Well, well… if it isn’t the infamous Uchiha.” The man grinned; his right index finger pushed the glasses up to the top of his nose.

Sasuke’s face remained blank. “And you are?”

“Forgive me, where are my manners?” He bowed, making sure his eyes never left the two men. “My name is Kabuto, I am Lord Orochimaru’s servant.”

“Where is Orochimaru?” The blond asked, his gun aimed straight for Kabuto’s head.

“The master had some business relations to attend to. Not that it matters, dealing with cretin such as yourselves is beneath someone of Lord Orochimaru’s power.”

“Heh, don’t underestimate me. Just because you’re some vampire’s bitch doesn’t mean I can’t kick your ass.”

“Oh my, Naruto. Who said anything about fighting me?” Kabuto grinned again. “As much as I’d love to stay and… play, Lord Orochimaru has requested my presence tonight. So, I arranged a playmate for you.”

A guttural howl echoed through the caves, causing the hairs on Naruto’s neck to stand on end, his aim remained steady, resisting the tingling sensation that raced up his spine.

“Leave him, Naruto. We got bigger problems.” The raven motioned for Naruto to turn to his right where a second exit from the cavern lay partially hidden by a formation of rocks jutting upwards from the floor. A soft padding sound drew closer. Blue eyes widened as an enormous, white wolf plodded into the room. The wolf circled slowly behind Kabuto, coming to a stop at his side. Stood next to Kabuto the wolf appeared to be four or five feet tall. Its long, pink tongue, dripping with saliva, licked its black lips, flashing a set of razor sharp teeth as it took in the sight of the two young men. Dark-rimmed ears stood to attention, as did a long, bushy tail that swayed slowly from side to side.

“This is Kimimaro.” Kabuto placed a hand atop the wolf’s head and began stroking the coarse, silvery fur. “I do hope you’ll get along and have a bloody good time.” The silver-haired man cackled insanely as he moved in the direction of the exit.

“Any plans from the great Uzumaki?” Sasuke watched the wolf carefully, wishing he’d had time to prepare and bring something bigger than a dagger.

“None. What about you, Mister I-only-need-a-tiny-knife?”

“Hey, it’s not my fault I had to rush down here unprepared to help out some idiot who walked blindly into an obvious trap!” The raven snarled.

Kimimaro watched excitedly. He sniffed the air, taking in the scent of fresh meat, with hot blood pumping through it. His tail swished faster. Crouching into an attack position he studied his two opponents. The raven looked tempting to eat, but that was nothing compared to the blond’s scent; he would definitely make a delicious meal. His mind was set, he would dispose of Sasuke quickly and leave the best part of the meal until last, giving him time to savor it. Amber eyes locked onto Sasuke.

“Shit” Kimimaro leapt through the air, his mouth open wide. Sasuke crouched and rolled to the side. There were three loud bangs, followed by a thud. The wolf yelped, as three bullets hit him square in the chest, his legs collapsing under him as he hit the floor.

The wolf was hurt; silver bullets stung at his insides like venom. Kimimaro clambered back to his feet. The raven to his left stayed close to the ground, almost like a cobra ready to strike at the right moment. On the other side the blond sidestepped slowly around him, gun still aimed directly at him. He had underestimated that gun once; a mistake that wouldn’t be repeated.

With a sudden burst of speed the giant wolf dashed towards Naruto who bravely stood his ground. A large paw swiped at the gun as two more shots were fired. The first bullet plunged into the wolf’s neck, with the second going wide when the gun was forcefully knocked from Naruto’s grip, landing in the pool with a small splash.

Kimimaro snarled as he batted the now unarmed blond to the side. Naruto fell to the ground, letting out a grunt as his body hit the cold stone. The wolf turned quickly as he felt Sasuke’s dagger plunge into his shoulder. Sasuke jumped back, dodging a wide swipe, intent that he had gotten the canine’s attention.

With the blond disarmed he was free to go back to the original plan. Once again Kimimaro leapt through the air towards Sasuke, though this time he didn’t try to avoid it. Bracing himself, the raven thrust the dagger into the wolf’s chest. The force of the impact brought them both to the ground. Kimimaro snapped angrily at the raven beneath him, the only thing stopping him from reaching that pale flesh was a pair of hands pushing upwards against his neck.

An unexpected growl caused both Kimimaro and Sasuke to freeze. Their heads turned in the direction of the sound. Naruto was on all fours. His irises had deepened to a dark crimson, his pupils narrowed to only a slit. Using the distraction to his advantage Sasuke brought his knees to his chest and kicked out as hard as he could, sending the wolf toppling backwards. Naruto charged across the room with an inhuman speed, his clawed hand grabbed at Kimimaro’s throat, pinning him on his back. The wolf coughed and hacked as the pressure crushed his windpipe, his paws flailing wildly, scratching and tearing at the tanned skin that held him in place and yet Naruto didn’t even flinch as the skin was torn to shreds, exposing the glistening bone and muscle beneath. Clawed fingers dug deep into the wolf’s neck before pulling away sharply, bringing with them a huge chunk of bloodied flesh and a spray of scalding blood.

Kimimaro’s body flopped lifelessly to the floor. The spray of blood had quieted to a steady stream that pooled out across the cavern floor. Naruto collapsed to his knees. His breath was ragged and his heart pounded against his ribcage. His red eyes widened as they slowly bled back to their original blue colour, taking in the horror that lay before him. A sharp sting in his arm grabbed his attention. Looking down he noted the mass of claw marks, the skin knitting itself back together again like watching a video on hi-speed. His whole body was trembling as he looked up to see Sasuke stood over him.

“Did I…” Those words were all he could manage. His voice was strained.

Sasuke nodded. “We need to get out of here.” He knelt beside Naruto, lifting a tanned arm over his shoulder. The raven wrapped a pale arm around Naruto’s waist and lifted him to his feet. Naruto fought against him, but his weak struggling was to no avail as Sasuke gripped him tighter. “Just let me help you, moron.”

The blond was too weak to retort as he was virtually carried all the way to their vehicles. Sasuke sat him down against the bright, orange car as he checked Naruto’s pockets for car keys. Naruto had not stopped trembling and his body felt cold to the touch. With the keys in hand Sasuke quickly made his way to the trunk and popped it open. There was nothing of use; nothing that could be used to help keep someone warm. The raven opened the passenger door. He lifted Naruto onto the edge of the seat before unzipping his leather jacket. Carefully he placed the blond’s arms into the jacket and zipped it up before lifting the blond fully into the seat and strapping him in. Sasuke raced to the other side of the car and climbed into the driver’s seat. As he started the car and pulled out of the parking lot he struggled to pull his phone out of the pocket of his jeans. Once they were speeding down the main road Sasuke punched a number into his phone and pressed it against his ear. The phone rang four times before it was finally answered.

“Hinata, I need your help.” Sasuke checked the car’s heating to make sure it was working. “Yes it’s an emergency… I need your expertise.” Naruto’s body was still cold. “Thank you, I’ll be there in a few minutes.” The phone snapped shut and Sasuke’s grip on the wheel tightened. He looked over to the blond who was now unconscious though his body still shook. His mind flooded with memories of his first love, the love that was stolen from him whilst he did nothing to stop it, too scared to move, too weak to fight. “I’ll be damned if I’m losing you too.”

--------------------------------------------------------------
--------------------------------------------------------------

The car pulled into the driveway of a large house. A young woman stood outside the door, nervously twiddling her fingers. Her dark blue hair fell down past the middle of her back and her eyes were gray, almost white. Sasuke exited the vehicle and rushed round to drag the blond out of the car.

“Quickly… bring him inside.” Hinata stepped aside to allow Sasuke and a blood-soaked Naruto through. “Lay him down here.” She motioned to the floor where an old mattress and blankets had been set up in a small room off to the side. The raven lowered an unconscious blond onto the mattress. By now the blood had soaked through his clothes and dried to his skin. “We need to get rid of these clothes.” Hinata unzipped the leather jacket, leaving Sasuke to sit the blond up and remove it. Taking a pair of scissors she cut through the thin material of the black t-shirt he had been wearing. Sasuke moved to his feet and removed the black and white sneakers and socks, whilst Hinata undid his trousers. She motioned for Sasuke to pull them off as she lifted up Naruto’s hips. Lastly came a pair of orange, silk boxers that had somehow came out of the ordeal unscathed, which Sasuke held onto a moment longer than necessary, whilst the young woman covered her patient with the blankets.

Hinata knelt down next to Naruto and placed a hand on his forehead. “He’s so cold, what happened?” She lowered her head to his chest, listening for his heart beat.

Sasuke told the story as it had happened whilst Hinata checked his body for any injuries.

“So what’s wrong with him?” Sasuke asked, pacing backwards and forwards through the hall.

“His condition is rather unique so I can’t be sure… but if his healing is as fast as you say then that’s faster than any shape-shifter I’ve ever met. It’s possible that such rapid healing places too much stress on his body.” Hinata stopped to think for a moment. “If his body is reacting like a shape-shifter then we just need to keep him warm until his body recovers. It’s likely he’ll drift in and out of consciousness for the next twelve or so hours as well so he’ll need someone to watch over him constantly.”

Hinata stood up. “I’ll prepare the hot tub for him. The extra heat will help and it wouldn’t hurt to clean him up at the same time.” She turned to walk away but paused. “Is there anyone you can call? Anyone who’ll be able to keep watch over him tomorrow?” Sasuke nodded. “The tub will only take a few minutes to fill so please bring him through once you’ve made arrangements.” Hinata disappeared through a nearby door.

Sasuke watched the blond worriedly as he grabbed his phone and dialed Sai’s number. When there was no answer he sent a message by text instead, detailing their location. With his phone back in his pocket he kneeled on one knee, placing an arm around Naruto’s back and another under his legs. He lifted the blond along with the blankets and carried him towards the sound of running water.

“Sasu…” A startled raven turned his head to see blue eyes struggling to stay open.

“Shhh, don’t talk.” Sasuke tapped the door in front of him with his foot. A second later Hinata opened it from inside. “He’s awake… barely.” Naruto’s eyes moved sluggishly to look at the woman as he was carried past her into the small bathroom.

“Just relax, hun’. You’re safe here.” She smiled.

The large, square hot tub filled the entire back half of the room, which was otherwise quite bare, with only a few small cupboards, a stool and a washbasin. Sasuke sat the blond on the edge of the tub, keeping his arm behind his back to hold him up as he removed the blankets. Slowly he lifted the tanned legs into the water before easing the rest of his body in. Hinata opened a cupboard in the corner of the room and took out a couple of white towels. She placed them on the nearby stool. Sasuke was awkwardly trying to keep Naruto sitting upright so as to keep his head above water. “You know, a lot of the shape-shifters find it easier to get in the tub with the injured.” The raven raised an eyebrow at her. “I need to go check on some other patients. Make sure you get him cleaned properly and I’ll be back soon to check on him.”

Hinata left the room, leaving Sasuke to watch over the slippery blond who seemed intent on drowning in the hot water. Giving some serious thought to her words Sasuke sat on the edge of the tub, one hand snaked around the blond and the other starting to remove his shoes. The socks and shoes were the easy part. The jeans came undone easily with one hand and with a little shuffling soon came off. Sasuke chose to remain in his boxers; black silk, not unlike the pair Naruto had been sporting that night. The dark blue t-shirt he had worn was a different story altogether. Removing it without letting the blond drown would be impossible. Sighing he cautiously dipped into the water, placing one leg either side of Naruto and wedging himself between the side of the tub and the semi-conscious blond. Using his legs to secure the blond freed his arms up to remove the now soaking wet t-shirt, which was quickly tossed aside.

Sasuke grabbed hold of a sponge that Hinata had left on the edge of the bath and began to massage it over the tanned skin, cleaning off the dried blood. The blond moaned at the sensation, his eyes half-lidded.

“Sasuke?” His head slumped back against the pale skin, tilting slightly to try and make eye contact.
“How are you feeling?” The raven gave a quick smile at hearing his name.

“Tired.” Naruto’s eyes closed again.

Once he was content that the blood was gone Sasuke moved his hand to stroke through Naruto’s dampened blond spikes. This earned him a few moans, though Naruto did not wake.

Sitting there in the tub, holding the blond in his arms Sasuke couldn’t help but notice how right it felt and for the first time in a long while he felt something that he had once thought only revenge could bring. Contentment.

--------------------------------------------------------------
--------------------------------------------------------------

It was almost an hour before Hinata re-entered the room with a wheelchair, surprised to see that the raven had actually heeded her advice and gotten into the tub. Sai had called not long before and was now on his way

She knelt beside them, placing her hand on Naruto’s forehead. “He seems to be responding well.” She smiled. “We should get him out of there now though, we don’t want him to shrivel up.”

Sasuke reluctantly stood, lifting the blond with him. Hinata was waiting with a towel, which she used to brush off most of the water. Once she had finished drying him Hinata had reached into the cupboard to pull out a white bathrobe, which she wrapped loosely around him with some help from the raven. Sasuke lowered him gently into the chair.

“I’ll take him to a guest room while you dry yourself off and I’ll have some spare clothes sent up for the two of you.” The blue-haired woman maneuvered around the chair and pulled it out of the room after her. The door closed behind them leaving Sasuke alone.

His pale skin, now flushed with colour, tingled from the sudden lack of heat as he quickly dried off. He slid his boxers to the floor and kicked them off; they landed with a wet thud on the tiles. Looking through the cupboard he found a black robe.

The raven picked up his clothing from the floor. With his free hand he opened the door and headed down a long corridor to the section of the makeshift hospital reserved for Hinata’s patients. The house served as a refuge for wounded shape-shifters. Hinata, once a doctor at the local hospital, had taken a special interest in studying and treating ‘the furries’, as they were known at the time. However fellow doctors who had refused to treat shape-shifters, calling them inhuman, ridiculed her research. Eventually she had left the hospital, choosing to start her own practice with the support of a wealthy werewolf, whom she had once treated when no one else would.

Sasuke soon found the room where Naruto lay asleep. Hinata was giving him one last check when she noticed the raven enter the room.

“How is he?” Sasuke looked over to the sleeping form. His face seemed so peaceful now, like he was having a good dream.

“He’s doing great. His temperature is a little higher than normal, which is pretty common for a wounded shifter. It’s actually quite fascinating; his body reacts entirely like he’s one of them, and yet you say he can’t completely change form?”

Sasuke nodded. “His friend, Sai, will be here any minute to keep an eye on him. He knows more about this than I do.”

“Oh, I’m sorry.” Hinata fidgeted with one of her long strands of hair. “No doubt you’ll want to leave as soon as possible.”

It wasn’t that Sasuke wanted to leave, more that he had to, and seeing the blond in such a vulnerable state was making it very hard for him.

“I’ve left some clothes for you on the chair, Sasuke. They’re not much but they should fit.” Hinata walked to the door. “I’ll go wait for his friend.”

Sasuke looked over to the small armchair near the window. On it laid a neatly folded pair of blue jeans, faded from years of abuse at the hands of a washing machine, and a plain white t-shirt.

Now fully clothed Sasuke walked towards the door, glancing briefly at Naruto who moaned in his sleep, almost as if to protest against the raven leaving. “I’ll be back.” With those words he continued on his way. His leather jacket hung on a small hook to the side of the main entrance. Picking it up he remembered leaving his bike behind. His palm slapped against his face. It would take almost thirty minutes running at full speed to get there and the last thing he wanted was for someone else to find it, especially if they managed to open the small storage box; that would be trouble.

Naruto’s car sat in the driveway… his keys were still in the raven’s pocket. Opening the door, Sasuke eyed the car carefully. Damn that idiot for not having a car big enough to carry a bike

The moon was beginning to set; dawn wouldn’t be far off. Sasuke was tired and from the looks of things he was going to have a long run ahead of him. As he waved goodbye to Hinata who stood waiting in the main hall a black pickup truck pulled up outside the house, from which Sai exited. It was true that Sasuke had never seen Sai driving before, but somehow he imagined his vehicle would be a little showier. Sasuke walked briskly down the driveway.

“It’s perfect.” The raven was admiring the more than ample space in the back with which to hold his bike.

Sai was confused. “Are you making fun of my ride? I don’t earn much as a barman, you know? And where’s Naruto? Is he okay?”

“He’s fine. Hinata is waiting for you, she’s just inside.” Sai nodded and started to walk away. A hand on his shoulder stopped him. “Can I borrow this for the day?” Sasuke motioned to the truck.

“But then how would I get home?” A pair of keys were dangled in front of his face. “How did you get Naruto’s keys?” Sai’s face was serious. “Naruto would never let anyone else drive ‘his baby’!”

“I borrowed them to drive the idiot here. And he’s also unconscious… Hinata will probably let you take him home today before he wakes.” He wasn’t sure on that one, but she seemed positive about Naruto’s condition and her judgment was always impeccable. Of course, there was also the fact that obtaining the use of the truck would make things so much easier.

Sai raised an eyebrow. A grin slowly creeped across his face. “Deal. Have it back before ten tonight.” The two exchanged keys and went their separate ways. It pained Sasuke to leave the blond in his vulnerable condition, but his best friend was there to watch over him now; he could take comfort in that.

Sakura stood once more before the ivory-skinned man she called her boss, holding in front of her a small compact disc. A pale hand reached to take it from her, lingering for a moment as their fingers brushed. The brief contact sent a small shiver down her spine. His skin was surprisingly warm to the touch, even knowing that the story about vampires having cold bodies was a complete myth. Their hearts still beat, carrying warm blood through them, though usually not their own. The fangs and dependence on blood for sustenance was really all that differentiated them from humans. And of course their vampire powers and fatal allergy to sunlight.

“Thank you, Sakura. I trust you had no trouble obtaining this video.”

“No, sir.”

The mysterious vampire turned to place the disc into a small machine. A television flickered to life, showing an image of the caves where Kabuto stood waiting. He watched intently as Naruto entered the room, followed by the raven.

“Sasuke… he seems to be developing a thing for this Naruto, don’t you think?”

“It seems that way.” The disappointment in Sakura’s voice was painfully obvious.

“You do not seem happy about this.” There was no reply. The video continued, showing the fight against Kimimaro. It clicked off as Sasuke and Naruto moved out of sight of the camera. “Excellent, his power is most impressive. He shall certainly be the one to help me achieve my goal.”

Holy crap that was a long chapter, and damn it suddenly got hot in England. Half the time I'd rather take an ice bath than sit in front of an old PC that blows pure heat out of its ass.

Anyway, enough of my rambling. Thanks to those who reviewed, I hope you continue to provide your support and I'll be back in another two weeks with the next chapter... if I haven't melted by then.
