The Wolf and the Fox...
Part VIII...

Shikamaru stood, "I have a plan." He didn't look at all pleased, "And you will not like it at all."
Tsunade growled, "Out with it!"
"An exchange will be offered someone of great worth…You Lady."
"No!" Shizune barked angrily, "I won't let you lady!"
"She's right," Kushina said sadly.
"I did not say they would keep you, or even get you in the first place." Shikamaru sighed, "But it is quite risky they might get two for the price of one."
"What do you mean buck?" Tsunade asked.
"I mean to say it is simple offer them a female golden fox in exchange for the male one. While the wolves are distracted, we will retrieve Naruto. Kushina will pass as Tsunade and Lady you will be waiting for us in safety of your lands. Even an angry wolf knows better than to cross into your lands uninvited. The todd may be very badly injured so I think you should prepare for healing him."
Tsunade growled loudly, "I do not like this plan. Kushina should not have to—"
"I'll do it!" Kushina barked, "I would give my life, neigh my very soul to save my son."
"Kushina?" Tsunade and Shizune whined.
"No, He is my son I will not rest until I know he is safe! Pray to the great Kyuubi for my kit's safety," Kushina howled sadly.

Sasuke whined his leg throbbed and his body felt too hot. Naruto whimpered feeling the fever radiating off of the wolf. He licked a dry warm nose to comfort his captor. Then he nibbled at the dried leaves to remove them. It had only been a few hours but the infection set in quickly. Naruto howled at piercing volumes bringing Itachi trotting to the cave.
"So what little brother is the problem," He smirked preparing an emotional jab at his whiny beta. The rancid aroma of infection hit his nostrils and he bristled.
"What happened!" He barked angrily knocking the fox away from his brother and pinning him roughly, "Answer me!" He snapped angrily at Naruto's soft neck. Naruto whined out in fear and went limp. He didn't speak.
"I said ANSWER ME!" Itachi gave a warning bite.
"His leg is infected!" Naruto squealed out in pain and fear, "His leg needs to be cleaned and some herbs rubbed into it to kill the infection. I don't know why it was infected do badly, so quickly, unless he was already sick!" Itachi released him satisfied enough. He shoved his nose under Sasuke pushing him up in to his neck until he slid down his back. He stood with his ailing brother lying across his back, "Follow me little one…and I am sorry I attacked you." He did not look back. Naruto followed obediently. He was really frightened of the larger black wolf, he had just the other day attempted to rape him, and despite the fact that Sasuke had taken him against his will he was more than worried about the younger slightly smaller wolf. Naruto blinked away tears in his confusion. He realized that the wolf was making it quickly out of the cave and he feared losing him or being left alone to be attacked by that blue wolf or the yellow one. Itachi lead Naruto out of the cave system into an open clearing where a few of the wolves congregated sleeping, mating or playing. Many looked toward them. Itachi turned to regard each set of eyes causing nervous whines and many submissive poses showing him they meant no harm. The white wolves growled nervously but they also submitted knowing that he had bested their alpha they would not mess with him this night. The sky was dark, only the stars and a thin sliver of the moon visible. Itachi walked past the wolves undisturbed. Naruto kept close noticing that many of the wolves even the ones submitting to Itachi managed to cast hungry gazes upon him. He didn't know if it was lust or genuine physical hunger, but he didn't want to find out either.
One wolf was brave enough to sniff under his soft bushy tail. Naruto whined and Itachi turned and began barking viciously toward the offender, "Know this! The golden fox has been marked as Sasuke's mate. Sasuke is my beta he belongs to me! What my beta claims also belongs to me! No one touches what is mine without my permission!" He snapped at the cowering wolf then turned and trotted away. Naruto scrambled to catch up thanking Kyuubi that he kept the wolf in his sights as they entered the woods. The night air was chilled, but refreshing after many hours trapped in a cave, even if the cave was warm and dry and smelled nice. Like Sasuke. Naruto blushed at the thought, 'no it is wrong to think that. Sasuke took me from my loved ones. He claimed me without my permission. He-he raped me.' Naruto's heart ached; those things were all true, but Naruto found himself worrying over the sick wolf. He didn't understand his attachment.
They stopped. Naruto looked around seeing a river just yards in front of him. He had never seen such a sight. It was huge and the water was clear and clean. He followed Itachi who unceremoniously walked into the clear ice cold waters. He moved until his brother and he were neck deep. Sasuke whined in protest but in his fevered state he was too weak to fight against the discomfort. Itachi held him by the scruff of the neck so he would not slip under the gentle current of the vast river. Naruto followed feeling the numbing cold biting at his sensitive little paws, but he pushed forward. He joined them and began licking at the infection desperate to remove it from the wound. The water helped in the task immensely. Soon the infected puss was washed away revealing the puffy swollen gash. It had begun to heal, but it was clear that something had gotten into Sasuke's wound. Naruto was satisfied that all the bad stuff was gone swiped his tongue over the soft swollen flesh soothingly before indicating that they needed to get out of the freezing water. Naruto struggled to swim back feeling painfully numb. He dragged himself to shore. Itachi seemed to have less trouble bringing his brother to the smooth rock bank and dragging him to the soft grass. He shook himself to rid his fur of excess water. Naruto imitated him.
Sasuke began shivering violently as his fever fought the cold night air, "Wolf? Would you lay with him, keep him warm. I promise to be right back. I'll look for the right herbs. I will be quick." Itachi nodded not knowing whether to trust him, but the fox's eyes plead with the wolf.

Here was Naruto's perfect chance to escape, but he didn't even give a thought to running away. He was busy sniffing out any medicinal herbs he could find, "Perfect!" Naruto yipped happily. He pulled at the weeds. He knew they stung like the dickens, but they were exactly the right grass to kill the bad stuff. He didn't stop though he knew of herbs that would sooth the throbbing pain in his leg if they could get Sasuke to eat some of it without throwing up.

Itachi growled he began to regret letting the little beast leave. He couldn't go looking for the fox however as his brother had just emptied his stomach and now smelled horrible. He sighed as he dragged Sasuke back to the river to rinse the smell that would make him an easy mark if Itachi did have to leave him for some reason.

Naruto barked happily as he ran back to the spot. He frowned as he smelled the puddle of bile. He walked around it whining. The bigger wolf must have moved up wind of the foul smelling stuff. He sniffed and found them He happily ran to the thicket where he found a shivering Sasuke and an irritated Itachi, "It's a good thing you came back fox. I would have killed you otherwise." Naruto swallowed the lump in his throat trying not to swallow Sasuke's medicine. He dropped it feeling his mouth going numb from the toxic plants.
He sorted out the stinging plant from the one Sasuke should eat,
Um wolf?"
"What?" He barked angrily. He was very unhappy his little brother was in severe pain and he felt helpless so lashing out at the only other being there seemed like a good idea. Naruto whimpered.
"C-c-can y-y-you…"
"Spit it out!"
"Can you make him swallow this?" Naruto nearly howled out.
"Why?"
"It will help him feel better and make the swelling go down." Itachi nodded taking the bundle of weeds chewing them before using his own mouth to deliver the medicine to his brother. Naruto chewed up the other weed it tasted horrible and numbed his mouth a bit. He let Itachi finish giving the herb to his brother before smearing the chewed grasses into the wound. On contact the wolf shrieked and thrashed accidentally clawing Naruto's little face. Naruto ignored the pain, "Hold him still please." Itachi latched onto his muzzle growling lowly and persistently holding the bucking animal. The growls scared Naruto, but they seemed to calm Sasuke. Sasuke went limp a few whimpers escaping his throat as Naruto continued. He ignored the blood that dripped under his right eye; any closer and he would have lost sight in that eye. He applied the paste of his own saliva and the chewed up herbs to the injury. Sasuke whined but didn't even twitch after that. Naruto turned away hacking up the bit of food that was still resting in his stomach. He fell over exhausted. Itachi nuzzled Sasuke and noticed he was no longer shivering so violently and it seemed as if his fever broke. Itachi was pleased. He had worried so much over the little brother he had cared for since their parents were so cruelly taken from them. "Thank you fox," He softly praised the tired little animal, "I think you have saved my beta. Come along let us get the two of you back so you can get some rest. Naruto pushed his tired body up and Itachi pushed Sasuke onto his back as he had before. They went slowly for the sake of the tired fox. Itachi appreciated Sasuke's mate, and more then that he now respected the little guy. Naruto didn't panic. While Itachi had. If Naruto had not stayed calm, if he had chosen to run; then Sasuke would likely not have recovered, and even if his body would have recovered Itachi knew his heart would break if the fox left him. Sasuke hid his feelings well from outsiders but he was very tender hearted to those he chose to love. Sasuke chose wisely in keeping the little fox.

By the time they made it back most of the wolves had retired to their respective dens. Itachi carried Sasuke to his own. Naruto followed but his nose wrinkled at the smell, "Sasuke can't sleep in that bedding it's dirty and smells of his infection." Itachi nodded in agreement. He turned and left, "Come to my den to bed down for the night. In the morning I will clean his bedding out and replace it with fresh." Naruto wobbled on his feet but kept up with the longer legs of the wolf. Thankfully Itachi's den was not far off. It was similar to Sasuke's but the scent of Itachi permeated the air. Naruto preferred the scent of Sasuke over his older brother, but said nothing not wanting to insult his host.
Itachi slid the sleeping wolf off his back into a pile of clean dried leaves and grasses. Naruto fell next to the wolf. Sensing him in his sleep Sasuke latched onto the golden ball of fluff and pulled him close whimpering as he nuzzled Naruto in his sleep. Itachi chuckled at the scene. Naruto felt his eyes fluttering as sleep took over.
