Chp9: Unaware…
Sakura’s steps quickened as the faint scent of sakura blossoms wafted it’s way towards her. She inhaled deeply as the scent grew in it’s magnitude. She was getting closer. She made her way over the winding terrain, the leaves of the large trees flanking her in every direction tickling her cheeks. Soon, her steps found her in the middle of a peaceful glade. Sakura trees were in abundance, their blossoms decorating outstretched branches as well as the soft green grass, as if forming a giant, soft carpet in preparation for her visit. This was her favourite spot in all of Konoha. Her own private treasure. Hardly anyone came by there. She loved to just sit down, leaning against the old bark of a large tree, inhaling the heavenly scent around her. All her worries, all her thoughts seemed to melt away. After her parents’ death, she had found herself frequently awoken by the warm sunlight brushing her face, alerting her to the fact that she had spent yet another lonely night in the serenity of the glade. But it was hard not to. She felt safe there, happy, protected. Carefree. She remembered coming here after a session of genjutsu practice with Kurenai, resting and slowly developing her favoured trick of dissolving into sakura blossoms cascading onto the rich ground, allowing their scent to guide her, to consume her. This was her territory.
She had been so sure that she was going to march her way to Kakashi’s apartment, albeit slowly she sheepishly acknowledged, intent on spilling out her feelings for him as calmly as she could. Like the adult she felt she was. But with every heavy step, her courage steadily seeped out of her until she found her steps leading her to her favoured glade. Her very own piece of heaven on earth. She needed more time. To come up with the words, perhaps? She sighed, flopping over onto her front on the soft blanket of sakura blossoms among the soft green blades of comforting grass. She buried her face in the intoxicating scent. How would she tell him? It wouldn’t do to just march to his apartment on the first day of the holiday week, spill out ‘I love you’ and dash back out, she thought wryly. She needed a plan. She needed the right words…

Up on a large tree flanked with many branches, heavy with their rich, deep-green leaves, Kakashi sat with his legs stretched out in front of him, supported by the large sturdy branch, his trusty Icha Icha Paradise opened in front of him. But it was just a guise. He was beyond rescuing. Even his beloved book couldn’t tease his thoughts away from those of Sakura. The words and images just melded into a riot of shadows with interspersed bits of colour in front of him. It was hopeless. It was distracting. Especially with said object of his thoughts and affections just a few feet away below him.
He was perched on his favourite spot in all of Konoha, the tree being a shield away from any thoughts, any worries he wanted to escape, it’s large leaf-laden branches enveloping him in a green-hued bubble. Here he was protected from the outside world. Here flanked the hidden entrance to the secret treasure of sakura blossoms atop trees and branches in full bloom. Here was overlooking Sakura’s favourite glade. He had often seen her here as one eye lazily observed her antics below. She was often flopped on her front as he beheld her now, her chin in her hands, her long hair appearing to melt in the similarly coloured blossoms she was resting on. The scent of sakura blossoms appeared to tease their way into his senses, as if it was she who was seductively beckoning him to come to her. He had enjoyed watching her, himself remaining hidden. But today…Today he hadn’t counted on her being there. He had come to fool his mind into believing he could spend a few moments in the protection of his favourite tree and forget her soon after. But he was the fool. It would take more than that, obviously. He wondered what she was thinking about…It was all he could do to stop his legs from carrying out their desires. They had suddenly started urging him to take the steps they were longing to take towards her. To join her in her haven. To share his. He didn’t know what to do anymore. He was going crazy with his thoughts. He was crazy about her. His legs itched.
He was about to give in, ready to swing down in one silent leap but was stopped by the sight before him. Unbeknownst to the preoccupied Sakura, he noticed the tall figure in blue that was standing a few feet away from her. He was looking at her and it was evident he was about to approach her. Inwardly, Kakashi seethed. But his jealousy fought with guilt as he told himself he had no right thinking of her as his. He shouldn’t be feeling the way he was. He should be happy that she was apparently close to winning Sasuke like she always wanted. Yes, he should be happy… He felt like hitting something. He felt like leaving. But he couldn’t bring himself to leave. He couldn’t stop himself from following Sasuke’s steps with his eyes as they made their way to the woman of his dreams.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Sasuke approached slowly. He didn’t really know what he was doing. His mind was too occupied thinking of the woman before him, so his motor actions were obviously controlled by something else. His ego, believing she was his? His heart, wanting to make her his? He didn’t know, but it sure as hell wasn’t stopping him from moving forwards. Closer… Closer… Until he stood right before her. “Yo,” he said interrupting the stillness. The silence. Even the birds had ceased to chirp, the breeze had come to a stand-still, as if all eyes were studying him, intent on figuring out his next move. He didn’t know what his next move was.
A shadow had loomed over Sakura, robbing her of her cherished sunlight. She heard his voice. Sasuke. She looked up. “Yo,” she returned cheekily. It wasn’t her style but she was prepared to indulge in some distraction from her distracting thoughts. He smiled. She smiled back. She was a little dismayed at having somebody else in her cherished glade. It was hers. She had come here to escape everyone else. What was he doing here? How did he know? Inwardly, she sighed. If she really wanted to escape her plaguing thoughts, he was probably the answer. She accepted.
“Were you trying to find me?” she began with a smile. She had had no idea how to start, what to say. ‘What is he doing here? How did he know I’d be here?,’ she thought again. Sasuke cleared his throat self-consciously. It was inevitable. Another round of uncharacteristic Sasuke-ness was about to take place… "Yes,” he answered monotonously, before self-consciously returning the smile she offered. “Naruto told me I could find you here,” he offered as if answering her unspoken wonderment. Sakura just stared up at him. He sat down against a tree, his legs propped up in front of him as he leaned his head back to rest against the old trunk. “I just wanted to thank you for last night,” he said with a soft smile, “I can’t remember laughing like that in a while…” Sakura silently agreed. He had always been so serious…So consumed with thoughts of revenge. “I liked it,” he continued, “I could get used to it.” He winked at her. She just stared at him, not quite knowing what to say. “It’s my job as a friend to lighten you up once in a while, Sasuke,” she said finally, grinning up at him. Sasuke stilled. She had referred to him as a friend. And she lacked the honorific she used to utilize so liberally. ‘Sasuke-kun!’ the memory whirled around, echoing itself in his head. He had used to find it so annoying but now he ached to hear it. He missed it. She had cared. And now, he was nothing more than a friend to her? He couldn’t bring himself to accept that.
“No more Sasuke-kun?” he said gently, teasingly. Quietly. He hoped she couldn’t tell that he was hurt. Sakura looked up in surprise. She hadn’t realized. But, she slowly thought, she had stopped thinking of him as her Sasuke-kun for a while now…Was he hurt?! She looked at him intently. She hadn’t expected him to notice, or at least she had expected him to be glad her stalking was over. And for him to bring up the fact? Did he like her?? Her eyes almost widened but she stopped herself. She was getting quite adept at recovering from shocks. “Just kidding…,” Sasuke smiled. He couldn’t afford to scare her away, now that he was enjoying some sort of comfortable relationship with her. Even if she was just being his friend. He hadn’t even remarked on the actual purpose of his visit. ‘Besides being with her,’ he thought wryly. ‘The dance…’ Sakura’s heart stopped before resuming its beating. She was silent for a while before laughing. At the back of her mind, there were faint traces of the possibility that he liked her. Now, finally…But she greedily accepted the relief he offered, laughing his betraying statement away.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Kakashi observed the pair; Sakura laughing, her hair brushed by the sakura-scented breeze, Sasuke silently studying her with a smile on his face. They looked so happy, so intimate. He couldn’t hear what was being said, nor did he want to intrude. He felt like a voyeur as it was. But, he noted with surprise, Sasuke had looked hurt and Sakura…If he didn’t know any better, he would think she was over the Uchiha. But, of course, he did know better, remembering their conversation at the bridge. Kakashi smiled sadly. He could only spare a little of his heart to be happy for her. The rest felt like it was being torn to pieces. The rest of his heart that were devoted to loving only her. He looked at them again. What he could tell for certain was that Sasuke was probably in love with her. Him approaching her of his own accord, with no vendetta except to just bask in the morning with her. That was a first. And he had laughed and smiled with her! Kakashi should really feel happy for the two. Sakura would be getting what she always wanted. And Sasuke looked like he could finally find the happiness that would displace his loneliness. Kakashi should really feel happy. But he could almost hear the tinkling that was akin to shards of glass freefalling to meet unforgiving concrete. He could almost feel the staggering impact those same virtual shards made as they shattered into blind nothingness. Lost in his reverie, Kakashi swallowed hard. It was his tortured heart breaking.
