Naruto's Progress

“Damn it,” Naruto growls up at Raven. “I’m getting sick of always ending up on my ass.”
“What have I told you about cussing?” Raven asks as he offers Naruto a hand up.
“Yeah, yeah no cussing before lunch or no ramen for dinner,’ the ten year old boy grumbles as he dusts himself off. “But since you already said we’re having stir fry for dinner it doesn’t matter now does it?” the boy asks with a smirk.
“Clever runt,” Raven chuckles as he ruffles the boy’s hair. “Now let’s try that again.” They both resume their original positions as Naruto readies his katana for another attack. Now that Naruto was in his second year at the Academy Raven had begun to teach him how to use the various weapons often used by other shinobi so that if he happened to take them away from his opponent he could use it against them. Raven had also told Naruto that if he found a particular weapon and style that he liked Raven would not only buy him the weapon but find someone to teach Naruto how to master it.
Raven grinned as Naruto’s attacks became more controlled and less aggressive as they had been when he first began instructing the boy only a few months ago. Raven himself knew how to use a wide range of weapons and was proficient in all of those commonly used by other shinobi as well as a few of the more exotic designs not commonly seen around Konoha. Raven had often told Naruto that he was a jack of all weapons and fighting styles but a master of none and thus far he had proven this point several times as Naruto, with a few tips from Kyuubi, had managed to catch slip a few glancing blows under his guard.
Since beginning his studies at the Academy Naruto’s training regiment at home had changed drastically. Now Raven woke him up at four in the morning to run his 50 laps around Konoha before allowing him 30 minutes for breakfast. After that Naruto and Raven would warm up with 100 pushups, 100 squat thrusts, 200 punches and 200 kicks and then work on Naruto’s Taijutsu and Weapons training until it was time for the boy to go to school. Raven would then meet Naruto at the Academy for lunch, usually ramen, and then after school they would stop for a few more bowls of ramen before going home so they could meet with Kyuubi and Hatibi in Naruto’s mindscape and continue Naruto’s etiquette, cultural, diplomatic and political as well as his seal training.
On Naruto’s days off from school his morning routine would last until lunch after which Raven spends the afternoon teaching Naruto some Jutsus that the Academy doesn’t teach until it was time for dinner. Thus far Naruto has already mastered the Tree Climbing, Water Walking, Shadow Clone, Fireball and the Body Flicker Techniques.

Naruto sat in the back of the class, as he always does; trying to pay attention to what Iruka-sensei was telling them about their upcoming survival training exercise but finds it almost impossible as he notices Sasuke Uchiha all but glaring out the window. Naruto, like most of Konoha knows about his clan’s massacre and how Sasuke was the only survivor because his older brother Itachi hadn’t deemed him worth killing along with the others.
It has been nearly two years since that tragic incident and while at first Naruto had felt sorry for the boy, who went from being a happy child who idolized his big brother and tried to earn his father’s approval to a cold selfish bastard, three months of being put down and called things like dead last and loser convinced him that the Uchiha was now truly a teme with a stick surgically implanted up his ass.
After about half an hour of Iruka-sensei’s boring lecture Naruto, Kiba, Choji and Shikamaru finally grew tired enough with what they saw as a pointless review and slipped out the back window. The four boys and one small puppy took of running for their lives as their teacher screamed at the top of his lungs for them to get back to their seats with the entire class laughing behind them.

When Naruto arrives home after school he finds a rather ticked off Raven waiting for him. “What have I told you about sneaking out of class during Iruka-sensei’s lectures?” the man asks the now slightly frightened boy.
“To not get caught,” Naruto answers meekly while staring down at his feet.
“Exactly,” Raven says before pointing to the door the boy had just walked in. “You now the deal.”
Naruto nods sadly as he feels Kyuubi increasing his chakra weights another twenty percent as he slowly makes his way outside to wait for Hoga. Once the wolf summon arrives they both take off running with the wolf falling only a couple steps behind the boy to keep the pace of his 50 laps around the village.
“I swear that boy’s becoming more like his mother everyday,” Raven sighs to himself as he sits down on the couch in the living room to wait for Naruto to finish his punishment so that they can begin his nightly studies.
“Kushina was a wild one,” a voice says from behind him.
“Hai,” Raven replies without looking at the newcomer “What brings you here Tousan?” he asks.
“I came to see how Naruto was progressing,” the Hokage tells him taking a seat in the armchair across from the younger man.
“If you’re asking for a status report I’d have to put his basic skills and chakra control at currently that of the Genin level though he is still improving," he tells his adopted father. “His physical and chakra levels are easily Chunin if not Special Jounin with the restraints in place. Without them I’d put his power at roughly that of a full Jounin possibly ANBU though I’m not entirely sure as I haven't tested him without them yet.”
“He has really become that powerful in only six years?” The Hokage asks in amazement.
“Hai,” Raven answers before pulling out a pack of cigarettes and taking one out before putting the pack away. “The problem is that for all his power he still lacks the self-control and discipline to fully use that power properly.” Raven lights the cigarette with some chakra from his finger before taking a drag. “That and as you’ve heard he’s becoming more like his mother everyday. Combine that with Kyuubi’s Kitsune nature and you’ve got an unpredictable prankster with virtually limitless stamina and power that not only has the attention span of a 5 year old on a sugar high but is just as easily distracted.”
“I see,” the old man chuckles, “I seem to recall a time when another Jinchuuriki used to help the boy’s mother with her own pranks.”
“Yeah well…” Raven chuckles as he grins sheepishly while scratching the back of his head. “Like mother like son I suppose.”
The Hokage smiles warmly at the man across from him. “How is his other training coming along?” he inquires.
“Honestly if it wasn’t for him being so young and impulsive I’d say he’s almost ready to head his own clan,” Raven answers honestly. “He’s got his father’s knack for reading people and mother’s clever mind.”
“Sounds like he’ll make an excellent Hokage someday,” the older man says. “I have no doubt that he’ll be as great if not greater then his father when his time comes.” The two of them talk for a few more minutes before an ANBU wearing a Cat mask arrives to inform the Hokage the he’s due back in his office for a meeting. After the Hokage leaves Raven goes into the kitchen to prepare dinner for him and Naruto before the boy returns from completing his punishment.

A/N: I apologize for the short chapter but I needed to end things here before it started to run into the next chapter forcing me to leave a cliffhanger where I really don’t need one. Yeah I know Naruto didn’t learn the Tree Climbing, Shadow Clone and Water Walking Jutsus until later in the series but I have other ideas for the points where he would learn them. I also know that he never learned the Body Flicker or the Fireball Jutsu in the series but that’s what makes this an Alternate Universe.
The next chapter is going to contain things not found anywhere in the series and are there for semi-unique to my universe. I say semi-unique in that some of the things I’m using are my own version and twists on ideas I’ve found in other stories both here and on FanFiction.net. I’ll spare you the details here and explain them further in the next chapter.
