Challenge

A/N: Hey everyone, this is Tereshi! I wanted to give you a longer chapter but I'm feeling a little unmotivated lately. I only recieved two reviews this week and I don't know if it's because no one is reading my story anymore or if no one likes it. To answer an anonymous reviewer: Yes this is a yaoi. But as I stated at the begining of the story, I will be going through plot and character development. If you want boys action sooner let me know someone is actualy reading this thing. Okay I'm done now. Thanks for reading and have fun!

Naruto stood in Tsunade’s office looking intently at her across the desk. The boy must definitely have something on his mind, she couldn’t remember the last time he looked so serious.

“Spit it out Gaki. You want something, or are you just going to stare at me all day?” she snapped with a harshness she really didn’t feel.

“I’m ready Tsunade-sama,” he stated flatly.

Tsunade-sama? The boy had never called her that in all the years she knew him. Sometimes she had wondered if the boy even knew her name. He was definitely serious about something.

“Ready for what?”

“You said I would only be accepted as Hokage if I could defeat you. This is my official challenge Hokage-sama,” he stated still using the serious tone.

Tsunade shifted in her seat and looked out the window. Silence filled the room and seemed to stretch out forever. She finally turned back toward him after letting out the large breath she had been holding. “You understand the risks?”

“I am ready to face punishment or death.”

Tsunade placed her elbows on the desk and rested her chin on her folded hands looking at him intently. He had a determined look in his eyes and she knew she would not be able to persuade him to change his mind this time. “I won’t be able to go easy on you.”

Naruto’s half smile was betrayed by the glint in his eyes. “Of course. We wouldn’t want to give them another excuse. I’ll also hold back nothing short of killing you.” He turned and made his way to the door raising three fingers in a wave. “Tomorrow at 7 o’clock. We can hold it in the arena so ANBU will know it is official and not an enemy.” He opened the door to exit then stopped and turned around, “Jiraiya can let everyone know after we start so the villagers are not freighted by the onslaught of our power.”

Tsunade watched him close the door and could not help worrying over what would be the turn of events on the next day. She closed her eyes and moved her forehead to her folded hands, sighing deeply.

“So he’s ready?” Jiraiya asked from the window.

“I’m really thinking of boarding up that window. The Hokage’s office should be private but you guys are always sitting there taking in the conversations,” she stated without turning around.

Jiraiya chuckled as he through his leg over the windowsill, “As if you don’t know we’re there. If you didn’t want me to hear that, you would have gotten rid of me. The boy knew as well.” His smile grew wider when he thought about the boy’s growth. He walked around to the front of the desk and saw Tsunade’s face drawn with worry. “Tsunade, what is it? The boy is ready.”

“I know he is,” she stated as she looked up into her friends face. “It’s the council. Challenging the Hokage is a bold and risky move, and they may still not accept his claim. He really is the best choice the job. He loves this village and the people as much as my grandfather. Even after what they have put him through. And I’ve been grooming him for the spot is secret. He has a better handle on the paperwork than I do, he’s not as stupid as he like to make people think.”

“Of course not,” he smirked, crossing his arms over his chest. “An idiot is not a threat. An intelligent, powerful shinobi… Now that is a threat,” he finished, nodding his head and wagging a finger. “Don’t worry about the council, I have that trump card I told you about.”

“Why won’t you let me know what it is?” she asked exasperated. “Then maybe I can stop worrying so much,” she sounded irritated and a bit hopeful.

“It wasn’t the right time before, now it is.” He pulled out a scroll and opened it. Biting his finger to draw blood he smeared a line across the scroll. He made the necessary hand signs and a small frog appeared wearing a scroll on his back. Jiraiya picked up the frog and unlatched the strap that held the scroll. Removing the scroll he sat the frog down and it disappeared in a puff of smoke.

“Bit elaborate, wasn’t that?” Tsunade asked intrigued. “Must be some trump card.”

“See for your self,” he said handing her the small scroll.

The council room hummed with voices as the members mumbled to each other wondering why they were called there on such sort notice. It wasn’t the time of their usual monthly meeting to discus the ongoing of the village. One council member finally had enough and stood to address the white-haired man sitting the spot usually reserved for their Hokage.

“Jiraiya-sama, why have you called this meeting? Where is Godaime?” Homura asked him looking around the room for the blonde.

“The Hokage has been challenged.” Jiraiya announce to room.

“What?!” A large explosion in the distance punctuated the unanimous cry from the council. The room shook with its intensity and the eyes of the elders bulged with shock.

‘So they had begun,’ Jiraiya thought to himself with a smirk.

“We’re under attack! Call the ANBU!”

“It’s not an enemy,” Jiraiya stated flatly to the wide-eyed elders as he motioned then to return to their seats.

They settled a bit but kept looking from Jiraiya back to the window. “But who from Konoha would challenge Tsunade-sama?”

“Naruto. You’ve turned down his nomination so many times this was his last option.”

“This is treason,” one of the member hissed slamming his hands on the table. “We could…”

Jiraiya brought himself to his full height but still spoke calmly, “Before you let your mouth run away with you and you say something you’ll regret, it was Sandaime’s wish for the council to read this scroll.”

“Sandaime?” The group turned back to Jiraiya and focused on the small scroll in his hand. Homura took the scroll and scanned it quickly. He paled, gulped, and read it again. The other council members watched the expressions flit across his face but restrained themselves from inquiring until he was ready to address them.

“Naruto is the son of a Hokage,” he stated hoarsely.

“Sandaime?!” someone asked incredulously.

The group turned quickly to the sound of outrageous laughter coming from Jiraiya. They gaped at the sight of the Sannin rolling on the floor with mirth.

“San…ha ha ha…San…Sandaime. Ha ah ha ah ha. Old man Sabutobi?!” Jiraiya seemed unable to rise so they turned back to Homura trying to ignore the unseemly laughter.

“Sandaime writes, that Yondaime used his own son to save the village. And wished for the villagers to look upon his son, and not him, as the savior of this village.” Homura looked around the room.

Koharu, ever present by his side mumble, “A family powerful enough to achieve the title twice.”

Homura nodded then addressed the council. “It is my opinion that we have been remiss in the wishes of Sandaime and Yondaime for far too long. Let’s sit and make ourselves comfortable. I believe we are going to be here for awhile.”

Jiraiya smiled from his place on the floor, events were unfolding just like he had expected. He better go and make the announcement about the match before the villagers stared to freak. But he’s bet anything most of the shinobi were already in the stands.
