I do not own Naruto, nor any of the characters from it. I do not make any money from the writing of this story.
Slayer
A flash in the dark underbrush that would have probably gone unnoticed. Just the slightest of movements, like the fluttering of the wings of an insect. Like a leaf falling from a tree.
But it was neither of these.
It was frantic.
It was searching.
Where WAS she?
He’d been looking for hours now. At the most frantic of paces he could muster. She wandered sometimes, but in her condition, she never wandered far. This time, her scent was not even trace-able. He couldn’t feel her anywhere near him, nor taste her on the wind.
In her condition, she couldn’t have gotten far. She couldn’t have.
But apparently she had.
His leg muscles bunched, preparing him for the jump into the canopy overhead he was going to make. He completed it flawlessly, but years of practice, years of it being critical lessened his pride in such a task.
Sakura…
_____________________________________________________________________________________
Uzumaki Naruto stretched out underneath a large sprawling tree. The sunlight shining through the leaves gave his tanned skin and blonde hair a dappled look.
It was so warm today. The sky was so beautiful. His eyes could chase the horizon forever. Today, he felt he did not have to worry about anything.
He was nineteen today. His birthday… only he knew it was his birthday. No one else needed to.
There was no one else around to care, and he loved it that way.
Normally, he wouldn’t lay so out in the open, but today was a special day.
He wore only a loose white tee and a pair of old charcoal sweatpants. His feet were bare and as brown as his face. He wiggled his toes with a smile.
He’d told Sakura he was going out to do… something. He’d forgotten what exactly it was.
Sakura.
He loved her. More now then when he’d had that silly crush on her all those years ago. It was the love of camaraderie, companionship. It was the kind of love that happened when you could trust no one but each other.
He hadn’t trusted anyone but Sakura in longer then he could remember. No, that was a lie. He remembered exactly when it all went to shit.
He tipped his face upwards, the warmth felt so good. So different from the hiding he’d been doing for so long.
Naruto blinked and peeked an eye open, gazing into the canopy above him.
There, crouched in the branches was a very familiar figure, leaning against the trunk of the tree, reading a very familiar book.
The man had every semblance of Kakashi-sensei.
That was when Naruto knew something was very wrong.
He scrambled to his feet, years of practice helping him gain footing quickly and stay low to the ground in a crouch. His hand went automatically to the shuriken pouch attached to his left leg, strapped around his thigh. It may have been a lazy day, but he never went anywhere, anywhere without some sort of weapon.
He clenched his teeth, the feel of the enamel grinding together was jarring. It helped him focus, even as blonde tufts of unruly hair tumbled into his face, obscuring his vision somewhat.
His words were guttural. He was angry. He was pissed off beyond reason and he shouldn’t have been, but something was stopping him today from doing all the running he’d done previously.
Kakashi just looked up once from his book and smiled. That smile he’d smiled the first day that Naruto had met him, the one that had said pass. You Pass.
He racked his brain to think of something scathing. Something biting. Something he could walk away having felt proud to have said, but in his jangled mood, he only managed to spit out one sentence.
“What are you doing here?”
What are you doing here. Good one Naruto. Wasn’t it obvious? Isn’t it obvious?
He wants to kill you, that’s what. Stupid Dobe.
Kakashi sighed. As if this game was oh so tiresome and dropped his book. As it fell it collapsed into the shadowy illusion Naruto had known it to be.
His lanky body seemed impossible long as he stood, feet curled around the tree limb comfortably. Naruto hated that smugness. The way he was perching like … like he belonged.
But it was not long before Kakashi melted away as well, replaced by a somewhat smaller, but no less jovial young man.
Naruto growled.
“Orochimaru…”
And Sasuke smiled.
________
Well that’s the prologue. Got an evil idea in my head and here I am, shakin it out. I like this concept. Makes for interesting things. Where’s Sakura? What’s going on? O_o; I don’t know either. We’ll see what happens.
