ch. 1

Underneath, the fire roared.
It was unlike anything that had ever been kindled in a hearth, anything that had ever wrought destruction or charred bodies to ash, anything that had ever blazed forth from a newborn sun. The flames were bright orange, sinuous, twisting themselves into sleek shapes that almost had coherent form. Their song almost made sense, the growl too real to be air currents and tinder being consumed.

Most of all, it burned. Predictable for fire. Naruto was vaguely aware of the obviousness of that by itself, gazing out on the maelstrom as though he were far away despite being near enough to feel its heat intensely. It bit through layers of his flesh, hurting vaguely. He cringed away, but was trapped.

A deep voice boomed through the enormous room, through the dome of his mind.

"Looks like someone broke the seal, brat."

He'd heard it before, right here in his brain, just like this. Then there had been the comfort of gigantic steel gates holding the ravening teeth and claws back, the barrier put there to save him from the wolves they had thrown him to. Now it was gone, and Naruto huddled helplessly in the raging red light and shadow.

At least the feeling wasn't unfamiliar. The pain was pain, but he knew it well. It was the sensation of the Kyuubi breaking out, clawing its way from behind the seal, suffusing his being with its heat and flame. Even though he knew this time it was different, knew it was irreversible, it didn't frighten him to feel his hair stand on end, the soreness in his jaws as the lengthening and sharpening of his canines forced them apart. He was never afraid.

This was what it was to feel alive.

It was almost as though he could spit fire, breathe the tempest. Swirls of deep red-orange chakra danced around his body even as he slouched in the gloom rapidly being eaten away by the evil light. His eyes burned, and it was as though he could see for the first time. The odor of smoke and brimstone assailed his nostrils, tingling and gagging him like he'd never smelled before. Naruto leaned back into the ungiving stone wall, unable to care that he was trapped in his own subconscious, unable to do anything except feel the delicious pain and power flooding through him. It was like being magma.

In the distance, torn paper fluttered from the bars of the broken gate.

He was free.

Kyuubi was free.
