Expectations
Title: Expectations

It felt as though something had broken inside him.
Like something precious and important that glittered faintly in all of his darkness had been found. Had fractured and was now so scattered and dulled - tainted - that even the biggest pieces could no longer catch the light.
If any remained.
Sasuke was almost certain, at this point, that none had. Maybe it didn't matter. He had expected it to but then again, he had expected a great deal of things that had not - and never will - come to pass.
He had expected to kill Itachi. He had expected to look down and see his hands trembling - not with sadness no no no, but perhaps with some manic sort of joy yes - and clothes soaked in blood that was hisnothis and feel triumph. To know that he had won and find some sick, dark satisfaction in being the last and therefore the strongest of the greatest clan Konoha will ever see.
Sasuke had not expected to let Itachi live. He had not expected to look down at his untrembling hands and find them grasping desperately at his brother's flushed and hardening cock and still feel triumph. To know that he had not won but he had not lost, and perhaps he had won some very different battle than the one he had always imagined because Itachi did not fight this. Itachi stared at Sasuke in a way that told him that this time, he had not disappointed his older brother at all.
And the satisfaction of that burned so brightly within him that not even the thought of Itachi dying at his hands could compare to it.
Something had broken inside of him.
Or maybe...
Itachi's eyelids fluttered slightly; his only real reaction as he came in Sasuke's hands and smiled at him in just that way, and Sasuke wondered.
Wondered that maybe nothing had broken at all.
That maybe, at last, everything had come together.
