-Assignment-
“Haruno get you ass in here!”
A young pink-haired woman stiffened in her seat. Green eyes flickering to the man in front of her. He nodded reassuringly and they stood together.
“This is it Sakura, promotion time, you deserve it.” He placed a fatherly hand on her shoulder before offering the customary handshake.
But the smile on his lips didn’t reach his eyes. “Even if that means leaving your old partner behind.”
Sakura looked up into the familiar face. Patient eyes shining with worry, unruly pineapple-like ponytail, rough scar running across the bridge of his nose. She stepped forward and hugged him.
“Stupid, it’s not like I’m dying or anything.” He didn’t correct her even though they both knew a promotion could mean exactly that. He wouldn’t spoil her moment.
Iruka recovered from her unexpected show of affection to return the embrace, gently wrapping his arms around her. She squeezed him a fraction tighter.
“Thanks for showing me the ropes; I never would have gotten this far without you.” Her voice muffled against his chest.
“You’re going to ruin my reputation as a hard-ass rookie taskmaster.” He sighed despairingly making her giggle.
“HARUNO NOW!” They startled apart a little guilty and a lot awkward.
“You better get going it’s not a good idea to keep her waiting.” Sakura nodded and made her way across the room.
“See ya.”
“Good Luck.”
*******
Sakura hesitated in front of the door, hand above the knob, fingers twitching.
This was really it…
Joining the Konoha Police Force fresh out of high school had been a rather impulsive decision on her part. She hadn’t had the money to go to college, and had already been so far into debt no one would give her a loan, the department had been desperate for…warm bodies. Luckily she fit the bill and they accepted her application.
In the beginning she had been eager for the chance to make a difference. Consumed with a passion to protect the innocent, better the community, and bring evil to justice.
She had been righteously naïve.
Three years of hard truth and life in a starched blue suit had put things into perspective. Murder, rape, and drugs had become her reality. Konoha was a thriving metropolis seriously lacking in the law enforcement arena. It was impossible for the police to compete with the gangs that ran the city. They didn’t have the resources. No money, no manpower, no experience. Hopelessly outclassed, they were reduced to cleaning up the messes left behind instead of preventing them.
When times were good, gangs patrolled the streets more efficiently then the cops ever could. But when things were bad…they were very very bad. Power and greed reined supreme.
After her fist year she had been beyond frustrated. Nothing she did seemed to be having an affect. That spark which made her such a good cop was dimming.
Iruka noticed her depression and in an attempt to rejuvenate her disclosed the department’s greatest secret. Root. AKA ‘the Network’, an undercover organization formed to monitor gang movement and activity. Its members were the law enforcement elite, sacrificing their normal lives to become intimately involved in the crime syndicate underbelly.
Sakura found new purpose. New determination. New strength.
Iruka warned her of the group’s high selectivity and the hazards that arose from having a double life; gangster and informant. But Sakura didn’t care. From that moment on she was determined to be become a Network associate. Refocusing her training, she specialized in physical fighting, chakra manipulation, and gang mentality.
And now here she was. This was what she had been working so hard for. Sakura took a deep breath and opened the door.
“It’s about goddamn time.”
“Sorry Chief Tsunade.” The blonde woman remained facing out the window.
“I’m sure you know what this is about.” It was a rhetorical statement. “It was Iruka who recommended you. ‘Called you a fine officer, an exhalent partner. He said you have a good head on your shoulders and ambition enough to drive you forward. Officer Genma reported that despite having a formidable temper your skill at knife fighting is exceptional. And although its not often called for these days he commented on your phenomenal chakra control and talent in genjutsu.”
Sakura gritted her teeth. Genma was an ass. The man seemed to have a single minded mission to get into her pants. His teasing had turned more serious, bordering on creepy when she began taking his martial arts classes. Overlooking the obvious liberties that he took touching her body when they sparred; there was something about him that unnerved her, he felt dangerous.
“Genma is a former member of Root.” Surprise widened her eyes. She hadn’t known that. “He is the only survivor of the Python massacre.”
“Python? As in the Python led by the legendary Orochimaru. The Great Gang Massacre ending in Black Leaf dominance?”
“Yes. You seem to know your history.” She sighed. “But we aren’t here to discus Genma’s past. This is about your future. I know of your interest to become Network. This opportunity is rare, especially on such sort notice but a situation had come up and we need an operative prepared to step in immediately. You are they only candidate that has had the requisite knowledge and abilities. Not to mention you have the least to leave behind.
The words stung but Sakura couldn’t deny their truth. Her parents had been murdered when she was eight, and she didn’t know of any other family. The only person she had let close to her since their death had been Iruka. Sakura was very good at faking social interaction. She had perfected a way to gain others’ acceptance and respect but she didn’t have many good friends. It wasn’t that she didn’t care about people; she just didn’t seem capable of making deep and meaningful relationships with them. She opened her mouth to answer Tsunade’s unspoken question.
“Before you agree, understand that joining Root is not a decision to be taken lightly. The things you see will be unpleasant; requirements will be made on your mind, body, and soul. Being an attractive woman will only make it worse. Are you sure that this is what you want?”
“Positive.”
“Good, I was hoping that would be the case. You’re fired. Please turn in your badge and leave the premise.”
“What?”
Tsunade turned to fix her with a blank stare; she dragged out the words, “Turn in you badge and leave now Ms. Haruno or I will be forced to call someone to escort you out.” The pink-haired officer choked back her objection. Unhooking the badge from her belt she gently placed it down on the older woman’s desk and walked out of the room.
The return to her desk was hazy with confusion and hopeful confidence in her ability to read between the lines correctly. If she was to join a gang she could hardly remain employed as a police officer. It was just that her termination had been so abrupt.
Looking over the tidy stacks of reports, the neat rows of pencils, and her temperamental computer she realized there was nothing personalized about her work space, except her coffee mug. It was the same one she had brought in on her first day decorated with overlapping golden retriever puppies, full of soft brown eyes and lolling tongues.
No one had noticed her. Iruka was gone probably on duty…or out getting doughnuts. That man had an unhealthy obsession with baked goods. Sakura smiled to herself as she shrugged on her jacket and shouldered the backpack that doubled as her purse. She picked up the mug…and that was that. Leaving seemed as though it should have taken longer. The sudden realization of how detached she was from the place she called home for the past three years was uncomfortable and somewhat depressing.
It was time to go, the fine for loitering was $250, and as the newly unemployed she couldn’t afford to pay it.
Her head rose and her eyes catching on a familiar toothpick. That seemed to be attached to smirking lips. Genma winked and gave her a little wave.
Sakura resisted the urge to gag and made her way out of the building as quickly as possibly.
Outside the sun was shining and the sky was nearly visible through the blanket of smog that hovered over the city. The walk home would be pleasant. It had been a long time since she could enjoy an afternoon off.
Two blocks later panic set in as the shock wore off. The anxiety of so many unanswered questions was weighing heavily on her mind. Had she mad the right decision? In accepting her new assignment as Root? In walking out on her job without a fight? What happens next? After a few minutes of hyperventilation, Sakura managed to regain control of herself. The choice had been made. There was nothing she could do about it.
What harm could be done intrusting a little to fate? Her massive brain whispered ‘A LOT!” but she chose to ignore it and focus on what to have for dinner. Candy or Ice Cream?
Routine got her through the rest of the day without a major breakdown. Eat, read, watch TV, polish knives, take a shower, fall asleep.
The 567th sheep had just sprung over the fence when someone began pounding on her door.
The red numbers on her clock glowed angrily at her. What the fuck?! It was three in the fucking morning. Brain foggy she fell out of bed and frantically fumbled at the locks trying to undo them before her caller reduced the battered wood to splinters.
It was a man. And certainly not a man she expected at this hour or…ever. Not that she expected anyone at this hour.
He was old, with a mass of wild snow white hair that came to the middle of his back. He was wearing loose shirt was red with a large green and yellow toad on it. His jeans were faded and his Birkenstocks seemed to be falling apart. A stripe of red ran from his eyes down his jaw on wither side of his face. His sour expression quickly transformed into a wide smile as he shamelessly took in her half-clothed form.
“I didn’t think you would be a girl.”
“…” Sakura was too surprised to respond. He pushed past her to enter the small apartment.
“Too bad you are to be my long lost family relation.” He sighed woefully.
“Who are you?”
“Forgive me, my succulent sugar blossom. How rude not to introduce myself. But your beauty rendered me speechless.” He took her hand and with an overdramatic bow, placed a lingering kill on the back of it. “Call me Uncle Jiraiya. I am the proud proprietor of the Come Come Paradise Club and Bar. And you my ravishing delight are Haruno Sakura. I am here to assist in your Root assignment.”
She snatched her hand away. “You are from Root?”
“Ha ha, hardly. But I do own Tsunade some favors…stupid underage drinking and soliciting laws.” The last was said under his breath.
Sakura remained silent waiting for further explanation.
It didn’t come. Her guest began poking around. “This place is pretty nice. You are going to have to move. How lucky for you I know the perfect…”
Jerking the mug she had brought home from the office out of his hands she scowled at him. “Is there a reason that you are here, now?”
“Hnnn” He tossed her an envelope. “I was supposed to give you that. So I came by after I closed up the bar. All the information you need should be in there including the club’s address. I‘ll be expecting you to drop by around four. And though my body begs to bask further in you glorious presence it’s getting late and I’m sure you want to read over your orders. Sleep well, my sweet sweet angel.” She felt his hand grope her behind as he made his way past her.
She was left blinking at a closing door. What the fuck had just happened.
Shaking her head she looked down at the package in her hands, a tremor of anticipation ran through her. Finally, she was finally going to do something important, something worthy.
She ripped it open…

Spiral
Spiral is the newest gang on the streets of Konoha but one of the most infamous due to its continual challenging of Black Leaf supremacy.
All known crime organizations pay tribute to Black Leaf with the exception of Spiral. It is assumed that their insubordination will not go unchecked for much longer. Many believe that war will soon break out between the two.
Very little information has been gathered on Spiral. Other then it has risen to lofty heights of power and influence with remarkable speed. All members have a tattoo of a red spiral overlaid with three black tears arranged in a circle. They also exhibit highly individualistic behavior, uncommon in most gangs where authority is unquestioned and noncompliance is severely punished.
