Nightly disorders
“Lee! Will you stop singing?!” Tenten smacked him upside the head.
“Ow! Sorry Tenten-chan...”, he said weakly, while rubbing the spot where his teammate’s hand had connected with his head. “I was just bored.” the girl sighed heavily.
“Just because Neji is a bit late....you don’t have to entertain yourself”, her voice flashed with irritation as she looked up at their sensei, walking around in front of them, humming slightly.
“God....”, she put her face in her hands.
“My students!” Gai said suddenly, his voice overly cheerful. We have waited long enough for Neji, let’s get started!” Lee and Tenten threw each other a glance before standing up as well.
“wait....”, a barely audible voice called from somewhere by the stairs. “Sorry....I’m late...”, Neji walked up to his team and stood there as the other three watched him worriedly.
“Neji, where did you get those...?”
“What?!” he snapped at Tenten, glaring daggers at her. “Can we just begin, I’m tired of...”
“Neji”, he was interrupted by Gai who pushed his students back down to the bench. They sat there, looking up at him with questioning expressions. It wasn’t often you saw Gai looking that serious.
“Neji...before we begin, can you explain where you got all these bruises from?” Neji hated this attention, he couldn’t stand his team looking at him that way, as if he was going to break any second.
“I don’t know what you’re talking about....”, the truth was that he’d had to secretly borrow some of Hinata-sama’s face powder to cover most of the bruises on his face and arm, so to say, it looked much worse under the powder.
“This couldn’t have been an accident, could it?” Gai peered down at him suspiciously while awaiting an answer. Lee and Tenten also stared at him, wanting an explanation. Neji shuddery sighed.
“I fell down the stairs this morning....that’s why I’m late...”, he dared to peek one eye open to look at his sensei, wishing he would buy it.
“Then....what is this?” Gai stubbornly grabbed the boy’s left arm, holding it out to reveal a red mark around the wrist, looking awfully much like a hand. The genius was speechless now as his sensei examined the wound.
“I....my uncle caught me before I hit the floor”, he lied, even thought, he was hesitant they would believe him.
“Lee...Tenten!” the to other students jumped upon hearing their names. “you can’t take some time off, I need to speak to Neji.” the long-haired boy was about to protest Gai grabbed his arm and walked down the stairs leading to the park, with definite steps.
“What was that?” Tenten said fearfully as she turned around to leave with Lee.
“Wait! Where are we going?!” Neji demanded as Gai dragged him down the street and up some stairs. He was torn between the thought of using his byakugan to flee or not to.
Some shouts reached his ears as they ascended the stairs and soon team 7 and 10 came into view. They were standing there, watching Gai and Neji curiously, well, except for Sasuke of course.
“Gai?” Asuma gave him a questioning look and stomped his cigarette. Even Naruto was about to say something when the sensei and his student came into view, but closed his mouth as he saw all the bruises covering Neji’s face and arm
Neji gritted his teeth when he saw the weird looks he received from the other genins.
“Gai? What’s wrong?” Kakashi stepped forward to meet the other man.
“Can you delay the training for while, I need to speak to you”, he said seriously and then looked over to Asuma who looked from Gai to Neji and back.
“Hmmm, well....Sasuke, Naruto, Sakura, I’ll meet you in the park later this afternoon, be off now”, he waved his hand at three.
“But.....Why?”
“Naruto!....now...”, the blonde frowned before unwillingly following his teammate’s downstairs. Team 10 followed quietly, throwing curious glances at Neji.
“This isn’t necessary! Let’s just go back to training!” Neji squirmed himself out of Gai’s grip and rubbed his wounded arm.
The teachers ignored him.
“Where is Kurenai?” Kakashi wondered and looked around them as if expecting her to appear somewhere around.
“I’ll go and get her!” Asuma assured them and disappeared in smoke.
“Now Neji, have a seat”, Gai pushed him to sit down on a nearby bench. Neji didn’t like the seriousness in the men’s expressions, why did they have to take everything so seriously? Couldn’t they just leave him alone?
Kakashi’s one eye peeked at the boy, before turning to Gai.
“What happened?”
“...I’m afraid someone hit him”, Gai explained and was about to continue when Neji stood.
“That’s wrong! I already told you, I fell down the stairs!” gritting his teeth, the genius glared daggers at his sensei before hissing at a sudden pain at his cheek.
“Now, this couldn’t possible have been an accident...”, Kakashi stated as his hand traveled along Neji’s cheek. He gently grabbed the boy’s arm to examine it.
“Ow! Let me go!” Neji backed away and took off towards the park.
“Neji!” Gai and Kakashi watched as the boy went into the woods, probably on his way back to the Hyuuga estate.
It didn’t take Neji long time to get home, he’d hoped to be able to sneak in quietly, without any questions. And he hoped his uncle, and Hinata as well, weren’t home, since he was supposed to be with his team. His keys jangled as he searched for the one to open the front door.
‘Finally, now I may get some rest, why did I even come to training today?’ Neji thought and heard a ‘click’ sound as he turned the key. The door suddenly opened by itself, revealing the form of a very angry Hiashi standing in the doorway.
Neji gulped as the man stared right into his eyes, demanding an explanation.
