---Chapter 1: "Dead Bugs"---
To Kiba, Shino had a very peculiar scent. It was strong and smelled like the woods, but not the part of the woods that was the trees, leaves, flowers, and animals. He smelled particularly of bugs – dead bugs to be exact. Kiba didn’t know how to describe the scent at first, and Shino had suggested the words ‘dead bugs’ on his own. Hinata looked at the two of them curiously when they were discussing it, blushing and looking to Shino, protesting that he didn’t smell at all. She then quickly chided herself for even speaking up like that.
Kiba smiled a toothy grin towards the Hyuuga girl and shook his head. “It isn’t an insult,” he carefully explained, “It means he smells unique.” He then quickly explained how it could almost be considered a compliment for him to have placed such a unique smell on the Aburame.
Shino looked at Kiba over the fire, complimented almost by how the other used the word ‘unique’ over ‘strange’. He remained a quiet spectator, though, almost like he hadn’t heard a word of the conversation save for his momentary comment about ‘dead bugs’ being his particular scent. He noted how Hinata’s eyes were resting on him, the white eyed girl seeming concerned that Kiba’s description of him was an insult. A smile twitched at the corner of his lips, but it remained well hidden by his jacket.
Hinata’s face seemed to brighten, having spotted the half grin on Shino’s face, the hidden smile he wore when he knew Hinata was defending him, even if it didn’t bother him. “Shino-kun!” she said, her face flushing with pride, “You smiled!”
Kiba snorted in amusement and relaxed against a tree, running gentle fingers through Akamaru’s fur. “A cute face like Hinata’s could always met a cold heart like Shino’s.”
Hinata’s white eyes widened, if they even could at the state of shock she was in at Kiba’s teasing words that didn’t sound too much like the teasing they were intended to be. “B-but Shino-kun is kind.”
Shino stood up, understanding that it was intended to be a joke. He looked towards Hinata, shifting the glasses on his nose. “Go to bed,” he said quietly to them both. “We have a long day ahead of us, and I will be waking us up not long after daybreak.” He turned quietly on his heel after those few words were said and shifted into his makeshift tent.
There were three tents set up around the fire, one for each of them, mostly designed for privacy as they weren’t far apart. Kiba stood up, and set Akamaru down, telling the dog to keep watch while they slept. He moved towards his own tent, and shifted under the blankets. Hinata didn’t follow far behind Kiba, not wanting to be awake and alone.
~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~
Shino received a rather rude awakening when he felt a body next to him inside his tent, and he rolled onto his other side, taking note of the brown, sloppy hair he was staring down into. “Kiba,” he mumbled tiredly, and rolled onto his back. “Get out,” he said quietly, turning his head to look at the form beside him.
“It’s cold,” Kiba whined. Shino simply frowned.
“How do you expect me to be alert if you wake me up halfway through the night to complain about how cold it is, Kiba?” Shino asked, having been broken of his half sleepy state to a full-awake state. He sighed, and shifted to sit up in the tent, and looked to the other. “Why didn’t you just crawl in with Hinata if that was the case?”
The brown-haired boy shook his head, tossing his hair wildly. “Because she’s not near as warm as you are,” he said with a frown. “And I like your scent of dead bugs.”
Shino simply sighed and reached forward two fingers and shoved Kiba’s forehead with them. “Idiot, get out of my tent.”
“I can’t, I knocked down mine when I was asleep.”
Now that was a far better excuse, and a more believable one now that Shino thought about it. Kiba was a rowdy sleeper, he knew it from the times all three of them shared a tent. He had a tendency to invade everyone’s space, so it was no surprise that his leg managed to find a way to kick down everything supporting the tent.
“Rebuild it,” Shino said quietly, finding a way to get Kiba out of the tent so he could get to sleep.
“What’s the point if we’re leaving tomorrow?” Kiba asked, yawning. “Just sleep, I won’t bother you.”
“Like you didn’t bother me that time your hand managed to pull out some of my hair in your sleep,” Shino said with a sigh. “Sleep out with Akamaru then.”
Kiba sighed and looked at Shino under half lidded eyes. “I don’t see the big deal,” he grumbled. “It’s only a couple hours.”
Only a couple hours, right. Shino could handle a couple hours was Kiba’s assumption. Within two hours he was sure Kiba could have completely flipped in the tent and would have found a way to knock off Shino’s sunglasses with a straggling foot. “Alright, fine,” Shino said, too tired and frustrated to care at this point.
~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~
Much to Shino’s dismay, his assumption was right about how he would wake up. His eyes opened, and he noticed things were a lot brighter then typical. He was also staring into big brown eyes and sighed, shoving the form away from him.
Kiba smiled, “I didn’t know you had blue eyes, Shino.” He shifted to sit beside him, and crossed his legs, Akamaru crawling into his lap. “I’m a bit proud that I got to see them. My sleep maneuvering must be getting better to have not woken you up but to have managed to toss your sunglasses out of the tent.”
Shino moved, reaching his arm to grab the glasses before he covered his pale eyes again, and shot a glare to Kiba. “Next time you sleep in the same tent as me, we better have a large tent so you can’t kick me in the face anymore.” He shifted the glasses onto his nose, hoping his friend understood that his casual picking at him was no more then teasing. Kiba was so easy to tease, and Shino knew that, but Kiba was also really easy to upset.
Kiba shrugged, seeming to understand the unsaid words of it being a joke. “You know you don’t mind,” he teased, and Shino’s body visibly tensed.
“I do mind getting kicked in the face, Kiba,” Shino said lowly.
Kiba’s body shuddered and he looked to Shino. “Creepy,” he said He looked to Shino as the other Shinobi started to pack up the remainder of the items that remained unpacked by Kiba or Hinata, who was sitting quietly by the fire watching it die out.
Hinata looked up to Kiba, noting earlier how Shino visibly got irritated by Kiba’s words, and didn’t know why completely, since it seemed like a joke.
Kiba moved over to Shino, and poked him on the forehead. “Na, you mad at me?”
“No.” A short, simple response, showing a slight irritation.
“I can always carry your stuff, too, if it makes you feel better,” Kiba volunteered. Shino seemed to shrug off the offer, ignoring it rather then saying ‘no’. Kiba sighed, “I’m sorry,” he said with a sigh, not typically the type to lower himself to make apologies.
Shino looked up to him, “I told you I wasn’t bothered by it.” The remainder of the objects were soon in the bag, and he realized they were ready to go.
“Does that mean I can sleep next to you tonight?” Kiba asked cheerily.
“No.”
“But you’re warm,” Kiba protested, Akamaru barking from his shoulder. Hinata looked up, and visible blushed at the mention of Kiba and Shino sleeping near each other, let alone right next to each other in a bed.
“If there are only two beds at the hotel, then we will be sharing, but otherwise, no, and I can always sleep on the couch,” Shino said flatly, and waved his hand to Hinata. “Let’s go,” he said only to her, since Kiba was already nearly walking on his heels.
“Kiba-kun,” Hinata said quietly, moving to go stand beside him, she leaned up to whisper to him. “Maybe you should leave Shino-kun alone…he doesn’t seem to like the attention you’re giving him.”
Kiba shrugged and sighed a bit at the words. He was absolutely not going to leave his best friend alone, not when he seemed so uptight and stressed out about this particular mission. Kiba still didn’t understand the details of it. It had been something about tracking a random assailant who came into town and disturbed the peace. It wasn’t a big mission, or particularly important, but they were to do it, since the more important and difficult missions were still being handed to the Jounin. Tsunade had figured that she didn’t want any of the Genins to get into trouble on a mission they definitely couldn’t handle.
That and it didn’t seem like she well understood the abilities of the group that Shino seemed to have taken up the position of leading. He would prove to her that easy missions could be completely easily, but there was something suspicious about this one that gave Shino a feeling he couldn’t quell. Like there was more to it – there almost always was.
