The Fragile

Haruno Sakura opened her window to let in some fresh air. She had been on a mission for the last two weeks and her apartment was rather stuffy. She cursed her forgetfulness when she discarder her junk mail and was overcome with the stench of rotting garbage. She quickly took the offending bag to the dumpster outside of her building. She opened another window when she got back and lit some incense to quell the malingering odor. All she wanted to do now was kick back and relax a bit, but she knew that the chores would not do themselves. Fortunately enough, she had the foresight to clean most of her apartment before she left, not knowing when she would be back. Just some light dusting and picking up various items and returning them to their intended place was all that was needed to ensure that her house was tidy.

Sakura went into her room and removed her vest and placed it on a hanger in the closet. She removed her small arsenal of shuriken and kunai along with a few assorted scrolls and placed them in the top drawer of her dresser. She shed the rest of her jounin uniform and tossed them into the clothes hamper in the bathroom. After two weeks of bathing in lakes and streams, she was more than ready for a shower. She padded over to the bathtub. After adjusting the water to the right temperature, she pulled on the knob and felt the immediate relief of hot water. She made an amused noise to herself as the steaming water made her shiver upon contact from the sheer pleasure of it. After she was thoroughly soaked, she chose the honey-almond shampoo and conditioner from the gift set her mother had given her on her last birthday a month prior. She inhaled deeply as she worked her hair into a rich later. It smelled simply divine. She would have to remember to thank her mother again. The gift certainly wasn’t cheap, and she felt awkward for accepting such an expensive gift, but her mother refused to take it back. She had a tendency to spoil her whenever she could since her fathers’ death a few years prior, and her mother felt it appropriate since she was turning 21 this year, and wanted her to have something a little grown up. She finished up with the matching body wash, and stepped out of the showers warmth to finish up with her daily ablutions.

She would have to make her “report” to Yamanaka Ino tonight, so she based her choice of attire on the fact that she would be going out. She looked unhurriedly through her wardrobe, but she couldn’t find anything she actually wanted to wear. Then she saw them. The jeans she had bought a few months ago on a whim while on a mission in a foreign village. She hadn’t worn them yet, as she didn’t go out much. Even so, there weren’t many places in Konoha that she felt that she had to look nice to go to. She smirked as she yanked them off the hanger. She remembered how she looked in them when she tried them on. The lady at the boutique insisted that she must buy them. She would be doing someone an injustice otherwise, because no one else would look as good in those jeans. They were made for her. Looking good and feeling flattered, she bought them. But what to wear with them? She didn’t have many choices. She remembered what Ino did once when her options were slim. The results were fantastic. She smiled and went to her underwear drawer. She plucked out a black silk camisole with pick lace trim that complimented her hair nicely. She was dressed in no time, and went to her floor length mirror to appraise the results. The jeans fit her body like a second skin. They rode low on her hips. Her hipbones just peeked above the material. A slim expanse of creamy skin could be seen between the silk and lace of the cami and her jeans. Nothing that screamed “slutty” though. Just enough to jumpstart the imagination of any red-blooded male. She smiled.

She applied a light dusting of powder to her face and some sheer pink balm to enhance her lips. Overall, Sakura thought that she looked pretty damn good. She completed the outfit with a pair of black combat boots, ‘cause nothing says “fuck you” like a steel toe to the face, chest or groin. One should always be prepared. She strapped on her thigh holster and placed a few kunai, shuriken, and her lip balm in the pouch. She ran a brush through her waist-length locks, admiring the way the shampoo was making her hair sleek and glossy. She secured her black choker around her neck, the metal plate in front neatly emblazoned with the Konoha leaf. That was as much a part of her as her arm or her leg. It was her identity. Her life. She was a kunoichi. A jounin. And she was very proud of it. She put a few well-placed sprays of the perfume that came in the gift set on her chest and wrists. She was ready.

Now she was ready to relax until Ino made her appearance whereupon she would be dragged to some club where they would drink and play catch-up, as was their ritual. Sakura made herself a cup of hot tea and settled on her couch to wait. As she sipped on her tea and savored the warmth, she began to get lost in her thoughts. She hoped that Ino would not bring her longtime boyfriend, Nara Shikamaru. She loved him like a brother, but on these visits, she just wanted to let loose with her only friend, and not worry what might come out of her mouth in a drunken state. And his presence only served to make her feel like a third wheel. It was good to see her friend so happy and in love, though. They had been courting for the last 3 years, and now there was talk of marriage. Sakura was very happy for her. Surprisingly, Ino did not pursue Jounin level as she had. She determined that Ino was ready to settle and start a family. It would be hard to have a baby when you are assigned A and B rank missions that could displace you for months or even years at a time.

Sakura on the other hand was beginning to wonder if she would ever find the right person to settle down with. Hell, she couldn’t even keep a boyfriend. After Uchiha Sasuke had left Konoha to seek power from Orochimaru, she felt as if he took her heart with him, never to be returned. Or perhaps more accurately, he shattered it with a power that rivaled his Chidori, never to be fixed. She had made several attempts to start relationships with men, and they had all ended when thoughts of Sasuke would invade her mind at the most inopportune moments, namely while attempting any form of intimacy. She felt as if she was not only betraying Sasuke, but the poor sod as well, so she would dump them. Which was utterly laughable, since Sasuke never wanted her in the first place. The pain lessened with the passing years, but truth be told her heart was still in several pieces.

Sakura felt a tear slip down her cheek. Would she be alone forever? She knew in her heart that Sasuke would never come back to the life he had abandoned. She suddenly felt very depressed. Her life was not bad by any means, but it certainly left something to be desired. She wished that Naruto were here. It had been too long since she had seen him. A year and a half to be exact. He was expected to return in October when his mission hit the two-year mark. She missed him terribly. She allowed a small smile when she thought of how her feelings toward him had shifted and changed over the years. He was on his way to fulfilling his dream to be Hokage. He had accepted the two-year mission to become the first ever Ambassador of Fire Country stationed in the Country of Sand. Suna to be exact. This was the perfect opportunity for him to become involved in the political aspects of inter-country relations. It was just and added bonus for him to be able to spend two years working alongside the Kazekage of Sunagakure, Sabaku no Gaara. The two of them struck an odd friendship several years back when Sakura, alongside Chiyo (an elder of the Sand Country and grandmother to Sasori, the infamous puppeteer and a member of the most feared band of missing- nin, the Akatsuki), Naruto, Kakashi, Rock Lee, Neji, Tenten, and Gai had saved Gaara from the Akatsuki, who had kidnapped the Kazekage and extracted Shukaku, the demon that resided in Gaara’s body, thus killing him. Chiyo had given her life that day so that Gaara could live again. Gaara gained a new respect for Uzumaki Naruto that day. Naruto had stood up for him and saved him even through all of the pain that Gaara had caused both Naruto and his friends. They were very much alike, Naruto and Gaara. Both containers for demons. But Naruto showed him that despite all the in justices that he had endured, he was a master of his own destiny. And Gaara could be too. The two shared a camaraderie that would no doubt carry them through the end of their days. Singularly, they were a force to be reckoned with. Together, they were unstoppable.

Sakura was startled from her reverie by a persistent knocking at the door. “I know you’re in there Sakura, open up!” Ino demanded.

“Coming!” Sakura opened the door and was engulfed by Ino’s bear hug.

“I’m glad you’re back! How was the mission? Get into any trouble? Hook up with any cute shinobi? Come on, let’s go to The Lounge and you can tell me all about it!” Sakura was surprised that Ino hadn’t turned blue from lack of oxygen. Ino had remained her confident, energetic self over the years, but Sakura had toned down significantly. Guess being a workaholic to fill the void where friends should be will do that to you.

“Okay, let me just get my keys and lock up.”

“WOW forehead-girl, you look HOT!” , Ino stated as Sakura moved to find her keys. “Stay away from Shikamaru!”

“Thanks, Ino-pig! You don’t look so bad yourself! Don’t worry, Shikamaru’s not my style anyway.” Sakura was ashamed of her own pretended confidence. She knew that she wasn’t ugly, but she wasn’t pretty in the way that Ino “the blonde bombshell” was. Where Sakura had smaller pert breasts, Ino was very well endowed. She also had a beautiful face where Sakura possessed more of the girl-next-door look. Shikamaru was envied by many men.

“Come on, let’s get something to eat before heading to HQ.” Sakura said. “I’m starved.”

After a quick dinner at a deli, they made their way to shinobi headquarters. The Lounge was an exclusive bar for shinobi of chunnin level or higher to let loose without the problems that sometimes came with ninja visiting a public establishment. The bar had a very laid-back atmosphere, not unlike that of a large comfortable living room, with a full service bar and a small menu for appetizers. Most shinobi would come in their uniforms after work for a little down time. It was an added bonus that you never needed any cash, they would just deduct your tab from your pay. The made their way to a darkened corner and lit the candle on the table, signaling the barmaid they were there. Sakura was glad that Ino chose to come here instead of a public club with pounding music and flashing lights. Sakura decided to go light and ordered a sweet white wine, while Ino opted for a vodka and tonic with a lemon twist.

“So, how did the mission go?” Ino asked.

“Fine. Boring, but fine.” She replied.

“So, no action then?” Ino quirked her eyebrows suggestively.

“No, there were no altercations if that’s what you mean.” Sakura said, looking a little confused.

“I meant with Shino!” Ino said, as if it were the most obvious thing in the world.

“Shino?” Now Sakura was really confused. “What do you mean, Ino?”

“Didn’t Shino…umm…talk to you?”

“Of course he talked to me, Ino. We were on a mission together for gods’ sake!” Why wouldn’t she just say what she wanted to say instead of beating around the bush?
“No, no, no. I mean didn’t he talk to you? Didn’t he ask you out?” Ah, finally.

“Nooooo….” Sakura drawled and shook her head. The thought of being with Shino intimately made Sakura’s skin crawl. ‘Funny’, she thought, ‘Shino must feel like that all the time!’

“He didn’t ask me, Ino, but even if he did, I don’t think it would work.”

“And why not?” She asked.

“Well, it would really bug me out…” Oh I know you didn’t just say that!! Inner Sakura piped up. “NO! That is…. I mean to say…. That it would be really weird, that’s all.” Sakura turned red with embarrassment at her obvious faux pas. Ino couldn’t help but laugh. Sakura looked around, afraid that Shino might be here, but he wasn’t. The only ones she recognized were Genma, Raido, and Anko, all sitting together at a table large enough for several more people. They were probably expecting more to join their party. They sure sounded like they were on their way.

Ino let the subject of Shino drop, but went straight into another, more uncomfortable conversation.

“So, Sakura, when will you finally accept the fact that Sasuke’s never coming back? When will you let his memory go so that you can move on?” She asked carefully. But as sensitive as she thought that she was being, her words cut Sakura very deeply.

“I don’t know what you mean, Ino.” She lied. “I’ve been over him for a long time. I know he’s not coming back.” She made sure to leave out the part where she had ‘moved on’. Sakura wouldn’t lie if she could help it. She emptied her half-full glass of wine in one smooth swallow, and promptly ordered a refill.

“You’re my best friend, Sakura. I just want you to be happy. Don’t you think it’s time to let someone into your life who will love you, the way you deserve to be?” Ino pleaded to make her understand. Sakura drank her second glass in record time before biting out a response.

“I appreciate your concern over my love life, or lack thereof, but really Ino, I’m fine. Don’t you have your own love life to tend to?” Sakura couldn’t help the bite that came with her words. She knew in her heart that Ino meant well, but it didn’t stop the pain that her words had caused.

“I need to use the restroom. I’ll be back.” Sakura strode off leaving a very sullen looking Ino. Once in the bathroom she let her tears fall as silently as she could, praying no one would come in. She wasn’t in the mood to explain herself, and she most certainly wasn’t in the mood to socialize anymore. Besides, she was sure that Shikamaru was bound to show up, so she didn’t really feel too bad about leaving Ino there. She made quick work of opening the bathroom window and jumped to the ground below and walked off into the early night.
