Prologue:

With a heavy sigh a tall redheaded man set aside his book and looked out the window. It had been almost five years since his friends' last visit, and although he preferred life in the Ningenkai, he briefly considered jumping the barrier to go see them. He was bored, there hadn't been anything of interest happening since the war a hundred years ago. Not that he'd taken part, but it had been fun to watch the humans plot. He almost never left his little sanctuary of greenery lately, preferring the solitude of the vast green expanse he'd claimed as his own. Once in a while he went searching for a lover or two, but those times were getting fewer and farther between every decade. He missed his friends; it was always a good stress reliever to tease short, black, and emotionally constipated.

It was a wonder all three of them had escaped the devastation of the Cataclysm a thousand years ago. Of course by then the only human of their group was dead already, so the poor man didn't have to see everything he'd worked so hard to protect destroyed by the first major breach of the barrier since their casting so long ago. Sensui was cake compared to what had happened in those years. Still, between the humans and their own talents and allies, everything had been put back the way it should be within fifty years, a long time to humans but short to he and his friends.

Even so, the damage had been done. Most of the world had been returned to the dark ages. Even the shape of the land had been changed, due to demonic powers and nuclear weapons. Japan was now a major landmass with an accompanying island chain, while much of the southern portion of China sunk under the sea. Taiwan was gone, as was most of Korea and Indoneasia, he didn't know too much of what happened in the western world, although there was an appempt to restructure the communication lines. It was too bad it failed. Everyone was cut off from everyone else.

In the Makai, wonder of wonders, his old friend had clamped down on the rest of the populous, asserting himself as the King in one fight, killing all the leaders of the rebellion. It was fortunate that the greater Lords had not taken part, Yomi and Mukuro had proven invaluble to the new king in the early years of his reign, while Enki had gracefully stepped down when the Toushin had challenged him for his incompetence. He knew he had made a mistake in not controlling the lesser youkai, whereas the Toushin didn't know the meaning of holding back.

The redhead smirked. Yes, his old friend had certainly grown up a great deal from the loudmouthed punk he had been. He didn't know anyone better suited to being King of the Makai, the punk in him would just beat up anyone who even considered rebelling against him, likely killing them in the process, while the more intelligent side of him would make sure he had positive proof of rebellion before challenging the person responsible. Even short and constipated was proving helpful.

He himself had chosen to remain in the Ningenkai to regulate the passing of youkai through the barrier. It was one of Yuusuke's better ideas, allowing youkai, who signed a contract written in their blood not to harm humans, through the barrier to live in the Ningenkai. Still, with Hiei staying at Yuusuke's side to act as liason between the King and the other Lords, it did get lonely from time to time. He missed his old partners.

/It's time to go for a run, Kurama./ said a voice in his mental ear. /You're getting positively testy lately. It's unlike you. You need to relax./

/But I've been doing nothing but relaxing lately. That is why I'm so bored. There haven't been any unauthorized breaches in years,/ the redhead replied in an aggreived tone.

The voice in his head chuckled and slid ephemeral arms around his soul, giving him a reassuring hug. /We've been coped up here for too long. We need to get out and have some fun. Why not go visit a human village and stay there for a few years?/

/Hiei needs to be able to find us, Youko. If we leave, he won't./

/Bah. With the Jagan Hiei can find us anywhere in the world. It's not like there's anyone else with two souls in the world. Let's go, hmm?/ Youko knew he sounded a bit childish, but his other side was so devoted to his friends he knew it would be difficult to convince him to leave, even only for a little while.

Kurama, once known as Shuuichi Minamino, stood and stretched, considering the idea. It was getting oppressive to stay here, he thought. /Alright Youko you win. Let's go for a run. Who knows what's going on with the humans these days anyway. It's time to find out how they're getting along./

With a small smirk, the silver kitsune receded to lounge back in his counterpart's mind. Now if only he could convince the baka to take a lover, life would be perfect.
