Chapter 1: The Top of the List

Hinata had waited for her eighteenth birthday eagerly. When she was eighteen, she could sleep with anyone she wanted and her father couldn’t have her lover punished by law. The great Hyuuga Hiashi, head of the mighty Hyuuga clan, couldn’t have the man that was gifted with his eldest daughter’s virginity killed, jailed, or fined unless he could prove it was rape. Hinata was, however, a chuunin. Of course her cousin Neji was already a jounin, but then Neji had always been better at everything than Hinata—everything except love. It’s hard to rape a chuunin. But Hinata wasn’t going to leave any room for doubt.

A week before her birthday, December 27, things were rather hectic with the holiday season. Hinata had made sure to make the appointment with Shizune, the Fifth Hokage’s loyal assistant and extraordinarily gifted medical ninja, over a month ago. Hinata had indicated that the medical visit was related to her coming of age and had asked Shizune to be discrete about it, but to please make sure she could see the Hyuuga heiress. Shizune had done both. Shizune, however, was surprised at what Hinata had asked for to do to prepare for the visit as they had talked in mid-November.

“Shizune-san, I will likely have to marry for the sake of my clan, the Hyuugas,” said Hinata in her quiet, hesitant voice. “I would like to experience sexual love before this happens. I have not wanted to embarrass my clan, so I am waiting until I turn eighteen.” At this point Hinata was bright red, but she had become a chuunin, she had changed herself into someone more assertive and capable of leadership than had been expected.

“I would like to talk to you about contraception and the men that I am interested in as partners. Since you have access to all of the shinobi’s files and have directed and supervised so many of them, I respect your judgement, Shizune-san. I would like to know if you think there are any medical, psychological, social, or political reasons I should refrain from approaching any of the ninjas on this list. When I come in for my medical exam in December and to verify my contraception is working, I’d very much appreciate it if you could have crossed out those nins you would recommend I avoid.”

Shizune had taken the list and agreed, not bothering to look at it in front of Hinata. Hinata had been glad. As bold as she had grown, it would still have been difficult to deal with if Shizune had indicated surprise or disapproval of Hinata’s list. Hinata had been a little amazed at the list herself.

First on the list, of course, was Naruto. Hinata had loved Uzumaki Naruto for as long as she could remember. Before she even had the concept of a list, he was on it. In her heart, she hoped that Naruto would be her first lover and her last. But in a way, Hinata didn’t expect it. Her family would never let her marry Naruto—unless he did become Hokage. And if he became Hokage, he could have anyone. He would want Sakura, not Hinata. Sakura had fought for him, protected him. Sakura had hit others who had tried to criticize or hurt Naruto. Sakura and Naruto yelled together, fought together, and cried together. Hinata had seen them. If only Sasuke had taken Sakura with him! Damn her! But more than she wanted Naruto, Hinata wanted Naruto happy. He was special; she loved him so much so would let him have whomever he wanted gladly, even if it wasn’t her.

Neji, her cousin, was not on the list even though some rumors had always flown about that they might be pressured to marry. Hinata knew that Neji was the most talented Hyuuga, the one that should be head of the family. It was not normal for cousins to marry, but it would put the strongest Hyuuga in charge of the clan and insure that children with the important Hyuuga bloodline were born. Hinata knew her cousin had never thought of her as an equal. But if she bore his children, that would change. It was a tempting vision of the future. Neji—the beautiful, the powerful, the talented—forced to marry her, to impregnate her, and to owe to her his change in status from branch to main family. Only she could give him what his birth had teased him with and denied him. But without marriage Hinate would never sleep with Neji—he had hurt her feelings too many times in the past. Although when she could detach Neji’s personality from his body, the thought of him as a lover seemed a bit more appealing. Hinata knew every bit, no well, to be honest, only almost every bit, of Neji’s body from watching him day after day as she brought her father and Neji tea and watched them spar. She’d looked at him with her Byakugan after all. She knew the exact spots on his body where his chakra emerged, the exact shape and form of his every curve. But she’d spent more time looking at Naruto naked than Neji. Since the amount of time Hinata had seen Naruto naked could be easily timed on an egg-timer, well, she could hardly say that she “knew” Neji’s body—not that it mattered anyway since he was off the list.

Now Kiba, of course, Hinata had seen—but anyone who really wanted to see Kiba could easily. He and Akamaru often bathed naked and even ran around naked playing when they were alone. With their extra sensitive noises and other skills, Kiba and Akamaru could easily avoid or hide from prying eyes—if they cared to. Kiba had become quite the stud, and when Akamaru would prevent people from getting close to him in the woods, it was often because someone else was already there underneath Kiba moaning in pleasure at his fierce, intense loving. Hinata didn’t doubt it for a second; she didn’t have to. Kiba got a kick out having her watch him make love to other women. He knew her smell, of course. Akamaru would even lead her to the best place to watch from—and Kiba would put on a show for his teammate.

Hinata was, in fact, in a strict semantic sense, sleeping with Kiba already—they had kissed, cuddled, and snuggled together on various missions. Kiba and Akamaru had licked more of Hinata than anyone else. But Hinata had always been passive, blushing, or passing out, and Kiba expected more encouragement and enthusiasm. Kiba knew, moreover, what Hiashi and Neji would do to him if he was getting himself or Hinata off when they were supposedly training or on missions—and Kiba wasn’t into pain and was getting too much sex elsewhere to risk anything for Hinata. If either of them was too aroused, they would immediately separate. But Kiba would be waiting for Hinata after her eighteenth birthday, maybe even expecting her. He wouldn’t push her or chase her, but he would be there, ready, when she wanted. He had been the third name on Hinata’s list, one of only a handful that had been on the list since it first came to her at age 13.

Shino, her other teammate, also was on the list and had been there as long as Kiba. How could Hinata not love her teammates? They helped her to change and supported her. It wasn’t a sexualized love—even in Kiba’s case—his clan was just physical like that. She knew that many marriages and romances bloomed among teammates. Even before she understood physical desire, she’d accepted that she would probably marry one of her genin teammates. When she’d been assigned her team, she’d thought about marriage with Kiba and Shino in the cold, calculating way she had been taught was appropriate for the potential head of a clan. But soon, she had realized that a love match was possible. If you didn’t go for the opposites attracted theory, but rather believed that similar people made the best couples, Shino was the best candidate. They had a lot in common. They loved to be silent, to watch others, to huddle in their large, oversized, baggy coats. Both of them preferred to be overlooked and underestimated. Yet it still hurt when Kiba was chosen over them to go help rescue Sasuke and for other missions. They shared many of the same pains, same fears, same goals, same dreams. And Hinata had never feared Shino’s bugs. The Aburame Clan had always been something she knew about from childhood on—the heir of the Hyuugas had to know all about Konaha’s powerful clans. It’s hard to fear something when it is just a normal part of your world.

Sasuke had once been on the list, very briefly. He was off the list. The Utchia clan was doomed. Neither Itatchi or Sasuke seemed likely to ever married or have children. They weren’t good husband material nor even good prospects for lovers. No missing-nins would ever make it onto Hinata’s list.

Chouji and Shikamaru were on the list, however. It would be a bit rude not to include her other classmates on the list. So only Sasuke of the males of the rookie nine had been removed before the list went to Shizune. The Akimichi clan and the Nara clan were not as prestigious as the Aburame or Inuzuka clan, but they were both strong clans that were well respected. Their sons had been among the famous rookie nine who made chuunin, and Shikamaru was the first to have made chuunin. His brillant leadership on that ill-fated mission to try to reclaim Sasuke had been just the first of a serious of famous missions for him.

For all his laziness and whining, Shikamaru still accomplished so more than Hinata, it enraged her at times. Hinata didn’t often feel violent, but Shikamaru seemed to bring that out in her. If he tried as hard as she did, my god, what could he not do? Shikamaru complained and whined about women, but strangely that just made Hinata feel more aggressive with him, not less. Shikamaru was the only—well, no, not the only one, but definitely he was the first guy she had ever fantasized about tying up and spanking. That hair of his sticking up in that messy ponytail—Hinata wanted to grab it and force his head to move where she wanted. She wanted to order him to put his whining, complaining mouth to good use. She liked the thought of pulling Shika’s hair, smacking his ass, ordering him to just shut up and obey her. He wouldn’t expect it from her. Hinata knew how Nara Yoshino dominated her husband and son—how they let her do so. The though of Shikamaru submitting to Hinata--because it would be “too troublesome” not to-- thrilled her. But it also was scary and stressful. She didn’t see herself ending up with the Nara boy.

Chouji, for all his loudness and strength, was more like Hinata in spirit. If you kept him feed, he was a simple, kind soul. Hinata saw this, but she didn’t like his etiquette. It wasn’t up to snuff for a Hyuuga. Oh, she was being too kind, he was a pig when it came to eating, an embarrassment. But he was a warrior too, and he had the famous Buban Baika no Jutsu, the ability to change the size of a part of his body. Every female in Konoha had had at least one fantasy about that famous Akimichi jutsu. Hinata’s younger sister, Hinabi, and one of her friends had been discussing their own fantasies involving it one night when Hinata had approached her sister’s room. She had been shocked, then intrigued by what the two young woman had been talking about. She had fled back to her room, her nose bleeding a bit, but she hadn’t been able to forget about Chouji’s jutsu entirely. It probably would never happen, but Hinata felt she had to keep his name on the list.

There were three other names on the list that had been there a long time. It would be rude to not include Lee-san thought Hinata. Of course, like Naruto, Lee loved Sakura. That was probably part of the reason that Lee was on the list; it would feel so good to steal a man from Sakura! If Sakura had the heart of Naruto, she didn’t deserve Lee-san’s heart too. Even before the time of her first chuunin exam, Hinata had admired Lee for his dedication and his support of Neji, despite Neji’s own beliefs about destiny—those awful beliefs that were so hurtful to Lee, Naruto, and Hinata. That Lee and Naruto had wanted to beat Neji up after he had come close to killing her in round two of that exam had moved her. Hinata would always admire and respect Lee.

All through the month of December, Hinata had thought about what Shizune had thought when she got past the unsurprising names on the list. The next name on the list made Hinata blush, but she wouldn’t take it off. If you could love Lee, that meant you could love Maito Gai. Yes, he was fourteen years older than her. But older men and young women were biologically compatable. It was a fact of life. And what Lee was, Gai was only more so. Gai was an elite jounin, a proven warrior of Konoha.

Umino Iruka, however, was not. But Hinata’s first love was Naruto, and Naruto’s first great friend and mentor was Iruka-sensei. Iruka had been willing to die so that Naruto could live. Iruka’s orphaned state, his loneliness, his betrayal by his one close friend, all moved Hinata’s heart. She had watched him teach, experienced his teaching, and had admired his good looks many times as she sat in the academy. Back then she would never have admitted to anyone she found Iruka-sensei attractive. But as she had made her list, Hinata had gotten bolder and bolder as the years had gone by.

She had watched the other female ninjas date, then take lovers. Ino, Sakura, and Ten-Ten were no strangers to the bar scene. They had gone on romantic dinner dates; they had danced in sleazy bars; they had received flowers and love letters. They knew how to flirt and to kiss without blushing or fainting. Hinata had grown up without learning these skills. But she was a chuunin, and she believed in her way of the ninja. She wanted to change, to be a woman who experienced love, who tried to find some happiness. Hinata knew that she couldn’t deny her family when it came to marriage, but she was not going to go into an arranged marriage without some basic experience.

And then it all came back to Naruto. She could never marry anyone unless she knew she had tried her best to win Naruto. Naruto must not be in danger from her family, so she waited and waited until she was legally of age. Naruto would not casually sleep with a woman that was a virgin or who took dating and love very seriously. Hinata was determined that she would sleep with Naruto at least once before she married. She had been the shy virgin around Naruto for years, and it had not won her any dates, any kisses, let alone any romantic love from Naruto. Hinata was not going to let another year of her life go by without changing that. She would have a lover before she was nineteen—she knew it. Hinata knew she could have a night of love with Kiba and with any of a slew of genins and non-ninjas who would be happy to sleep with a rich chuunin from a powerful clan. But no point in settling for just anyone.

Hinata was eager to see what Shizune had made of her list of thirty names. She usually hoped that it would have at least four names still on it—to give her more of a chance, more of a choice. On other days, she worried that anything under ten might not be enough—she was shy, inexperienced, nervous—and she was prepared for rejection and “no.” Then on other days, it seemed as if she could never love anyone but Naruto. She didn’t know what to think. But tomorrow was December 20, and at two o’clock Hinata would be sitting and talking to Shizune. And a week from tomorrow was her birthday, when Hinata would come of age.

This year, she would show them all just how much she had grown up.
