Chapter one

"Gaara-kun?" she asked. There was a sad tone underlying her gentle voice.
"Yeah?"
She looked at the ground uncertainly, avoiding his face.
They were walking along a bridge and had stopped near the gate exiting the city. Hinata was crouching near the pole supporting it hugging her knees close to her chest, every so often looking at the gate with an expression of sorrow.
"Gaara...um.."
She pulled her gaze away from the gate she had turned it to and looked him in the face. She inhaled and bit her lip, and her eyes darted back to the gate once again before meeting his turquoise eyes.
"We..uh.. My family they..um. We're leaving." Her eyes shot to the ground.
"What?"
"Tommorrow, dad said that it would be better..i-if we moved."
He didn't know what to say. He wanted to scream, he wanted to take her and run away, but he knew better. That wasn't the best decision.
They had been together forever, all 14 years. No they hadn't ever been significant in such a way...but they were all they had.
"Where?" he asked.
"He didn't say."
'Bastard...knew I would follow didn't you?'
His hand tensed.
"Why?"
She bit her lip and hugged her knees again.
"Because he knows that we are always around each other..and he..um..doesn't want anything to...result...from it. He says that I need to marry someone from another company..to strengthen the this one."
"Money lusting imbecile!" Gaara growled, "What a worthless man."
"Um...I wasn't allowed out of the house today. I snuck out...I wanted to tell you. I can get out again tonight..can you meet me here?"
"Of course."
"Gaara...I have to go back now...or he'll catch me. Be sure to be here, a little after moon rise, when the sky turns that lovely dark blue color." she smiled, "I'll be waiting."
She got up and kissed Gaara on the cheek before running down the path to her home.
He was looking at the ground, stricken and unmoving as he listened to her running footsteps fade.

He walked through the town alone, passing stalls and people. It wouldn't be the same without Hinata here...
He stopped and looked up at a passing cloud, reminicing the times her would walk through the same street so close to him, before continuing. It definetley wouldn't be the same.
'I should- ...what should I do? There is no reason to stay now that she's gone, but I don't have anywhere to go either. And I can't follow her because he won't tell her anything..how annoying. I don't know I don't know..'
He looked up and directly in his sight was another stand just like all the others. He kept walking but something kept turning his attention to it, so he eventually gave in and walked over.
'Worthless items...why-'
Gaara's eyes fell over a beautiful neckalce. It was silver and bore a charm that read 'Love' in kanji.
He had to buy it.
He would give it to her at the gate. He could figure out what to do later. Right now he just needed to stop his mind from spiraling.

She sat at the window all day, waiting for the night to come. She didn't need to pack, her father had supervised that with intensity the moment he had told her they were moving.
Good thing she knew some slight of hand.
It was to quick for her father to notice. She was packing her clothing, her father standing in the door-way supervising her every action. Earlier she had hidden something in between the shirts in her dresser. When she was reaching in to grab a new stack to put away, she quickly grabed it with two fingers and snuck it into the long sleeve of her jacket when it was still hidden by the shadow of the beurea. Her father hadn't seen a thing.
A faint smile formed on her face as she played with it in her lap, looking out at the sky. She'd be able to see him...at least one more time at least.
She finished packing and neatly closed and stood the bag up.
"I'm finished." she said to the man in the door-way.
"Hinata. Get over here."
Hinata hid her nervousness and walked over to stand near her father.
"Stay there for a moment. Don't move."
"Yes."
She watched him walk over to her pack and un-zip it. He went began to go through it.
'Good.' she thought. This would give her time to better secure the braclet.
She stood there non-chalantly, eyeing her fathers movments. She was slowly coaxing the braclet down into her hand from her sleeve, and if he stirred or even looked like he might turn toward her she would freeze.
Gradually she had worked the braclet down to her hand, and was about to slip it into her back pocket when Hiashi shot a quick glance at her.
She froze, nervouse as hell.
"Hinata?"
"Yes, father?"
Hiashi got up and walked to where his daughter was standing.
"You've packed everything you need?"
"Yes." she said, keeping her voice calm.
"Tea?"
"Yes." she said...and jumped back. He had reachd for her hand.
"Why did you do that?" He said, a little bewildered. "Are you hiding somethng from me?"
"No sir, I-"
Hiashi lashed out and caught her daughters wrist...which happened to be where the braclet was hidden.
He could feel the metal push through the shirt at his pressure, and forcefully pulled down the sleeve with his other hand. Hinata bit her lip and looked at her father, trying to guess what he would do.
"What is this!?" he yelled.
"A...a braclet..father.."
"Why do you have it hidden in your coat?"
"Well..I...wanted to..to wear it."
"Then why didn't you simply put it on?"
She glanced around the room. She didn't know how to respond to that one.
The grip Hiashi had on his daughter's wrist tightened, so much so that Hinata flinched.
"ANSWER ME."he commanded.
"BECAUSE..I-I..um..wanted to surprise.." her voice trailed off and she mumbled the last words.
"You were gonna wear it to go see that..that street boy, were you not?"
"He is not a street boy!" Hinata argued. He wasn't at all. "Just because we have more money doesn't mean everyone else is poor!" she said, feeling a tiny bit braver than usual. Maybe it wasn't so smart.
Hiashi back-handed Hinata so hard that she stumbled back fast into the wall, and fell down. She held her face and tryed not to cry.
"I forbid you to see that wretch anymore, why do you think we are moving! You disgust me, what are you? A whore? Why would you associate with someone who's always in the shadows? Who doesn't even have a two-story home!"
'Even if he is in the shadows...he's always there. He was always there for me to run to after you would do something like this or worse. As I was for him.' Hinata couldn't stand it.
"How can you degrade someone you know nothing about!?" she screamed.
Hiashi swooped down and slapped his daughter again, this time making her fall the rest of the way to the ground.
She didn't care, it was only pain. She couldn't let him do something like this, she had to fight for herself at least once.
"Who here is really the wretch?" She said, glaring at him defiantly. "Look at you and-"
Hiashi lost it, he fell to the floor near Hinata and began hitting her. Hinata fought back the best she could and managed to scratch his face, and push him away for a few seconds. Hiashi was much stronger and soon was back. He hit her again and she doubled over. It didn't matter where he hit, as long as he hurt her in his profuse rage.
Open palm soon turned to closed and Hinata was curled into a fetal position, holding on to herself and crying silently.
A few minutes later Hiashi stood up and left as if nothing had occured, leaving Hinata on the floor. She was bleeding and bruised, but she could tell nothing was broken. She lye there, heavily breathing, before turning over a litte and supporting herself with her arms.
She could taste metallic warmth in her mouth as a small amount of blood trickled out and dripped on the floor.
Straightening herself she managed to get up and collapse on the matress near hear, and to her great disgust he was back..with a cup of tea. He walked over and set it on the desk by her bed, smiling a revolting false smile before leaving to go about his buisness.
'You filthy bastard...' she thought as she closed her eyes. 'Gaara..wait..for me.'

Gaara leaned on the gate pole and looked down the path that Hinata should of been coming from. He had been there for almost the entire day, and Hinata was nowhere to be found. It had been a few hours since the time of night she had described. But he would wait, he'd wait there for days if he needed to.
Suddenly he saw a figure walking with great difficulty towards the gate. He squinted his eyes and was shocked.
Hintata was bloody and clutching the fabric of her jacket over her sternum. She was breathing heavily and limping.
Gaara rushed over to her and held her.
"Hinata! What happened, you're-"
"No, ...not here." she coughed. "We have to hide."
Gaara didn't understand, but he acted without will. Before he knew waht he was doing he had picked Hinata up and ran into the surrounding woods with her.
He stopped when they had reached a secluded lake a mile in, a place they frequently ran off to.
He gently lowered himself and her onto the ground, cradling her upper body.
"Hinata..what happened?" He asked, and lightly rand a finger over the cut on her cheek.
She lay there clutching his shirt for a few minutes before speaking again.
"Gaara..?"
"Yeah?"
"You smell nice." she said, and laughed a little.
He smiled and looked down at her before switching his attention to the state she was in.
"Hinata, please. Tell me what happened." he pleaded, even though he already knew.
That horrible greed driven man..That worthless waste of exsistence..' A single tear slid from his face and he encompassed her a little more, hugging her gently.
"Gaara." She said "Gaara, you already..know..what happened."
"..........."
"Gaara listen to me." she said, lifting her self into a sitting position. "Listen, um.." She played with her fingers a bit.
"Um..I..uh..I.."
"What?"
"I want to run away!" She said, and glanced at the ground.
"Are you sure?" He asked. He wasn't surprised at all, in fact he was happy she would be getting away from her father.
"Yes..Would you, um..will you come..with me?" she said, and closed her eyes.
Gaara brought the necklace from his pocket and placed it on her neck. She flinched at the touch of cold metal and opened her eyes to face his turquoise ones.
"Of course." he said, and smiled.
Hinata looked down at the necklace, and brought away from her chest. "Love." she said aloud, reading the kanji."
"Oh! That reminds me. I had something for you to...but..." she looked away.
"Is that why?" he said, motioning to her body.
Hinata bit her lip and nodded. Then laughed.
"Guess what?" she said.
He looked at her inquisitvley.
"I stole it back from him, so I guess I can give it to you after al." she said, grinning mischeviously. She reached into her pocket and pulled out the braclet she had hidden. It was made of silver links and a small engraved plate in the middle.
It was engraved with the name Hinata over the hirigana for love.
She linked it around his outheld wrist and he embraced her.
"Hinata.." he said, hugging her. "I love you."
She broke down in his arms and clung to his shirt, but still she managed to choke out:
"I love you too." through her cries.
