“I knew you would find me.” His voice was deeper than Naruto remembered. The blond paused briefly, drawing the chakra-laced, short katana from his back. A man landed no less than three feet from him, his hair long enough to be tied back, his face thinner than before.

But those eyes—they never changed.

“Of course I would. I wouldn’t be the next Hokage if I couldn’t,” Naruto replied in turn. A small smirk graced his lips as the other ninja drew even closer ease in every step.

“So you are the next Hokage. I heard rumors, but never thought those small-minded villagers would let you have it. You’ll be a great leader.”

“Sasuke. Don’t do this to me,” Naruto murmured. The missing nin stood inches in front of him, slowly reaching forward, his hand landing on the shoulder gently. Naruto tensed slightly, fingers tightening around the blade. He knew what he had to do. What he had been ordered to do. He knew it and yet…a pale hand pushed his ANBU mask from his face and Sasuke’s lips were millimeters from his own.

“Do it, Naruto,” came the whisper. The black eyes never left his and Sasuke pressed in even more demanding the blond’s attention.

“What?” Naruto asked softly swallowing hard as the hot breath caressed his lips.

“Take my life with your blade like you have been ordered to,” Sasuke murmured, placing his lips firmly against the blond’s, maneuvering his arm so the short katana pressed at his midsection. He could feel the hand and arm trembling under his fingertips. Naruto couldn’t do it. There was no possible way he could kill him! The blade trembled harder in his hand and the kiss progressed even more. Naruto had a mind to drop it but cool fingers slid to the hilt forcing him to hold onto the handle.

“Don’t weaken your resolve.” Sasuke whispered into the mouth, his onyx eyes boring into the cerulean depths. Naruto closed his eyes slowly before opening them suddenly.

“I can’t kill you.” Naruto jerked the blade back hissing, but Sasuke grabbed his wrist once more and kept the blade pressed dangerously against his midsection.

“But you must.” Sasuke’s fingers loosened and he slowly brought them up to the face, one thumb brushing down the scars on one cheek, drawing him back into the kiss.

“Now,” The words exhaled across his lips and Naruto’s body moved on its own, battle hardened shinobi senses taking over; the blade slid smoothly into the soft body. Naruto’s ragged breath puffed against Sasuke’s small pained smile, his limp body sagging into his own..

“Thanks, dobe. I love you. Never forget that…” Naruto’s eyes went wide and he whipped the blade from the body. It dropped to the ground while his hands clutched the now dead Uchiha Sasuke, his last words only causing the ANBU greater pain…

Naruto bolted upright gasping for breath, the sheen of cold sweat settling uncomfortably on his shivering skin. A wave of nausea caused him to lurch forward and he stumbled up from his bed towards the bathroom. He barely managed to reach the toilet. His insides heaved and after ten good minutes of divulging his late night dinner, the blond sat on his heels, his back leaning against the glass shower and his eyes staring almost listlessly at the ceiling. Would the haunting memories of that day never cease?

“Damn it…” he whispered. It had been three years since…since he had to kill him.

“It was an order I could not disobey…but…” his voice croaked. The back of his throat felt ravaged and burned, the taste of bile strong in his mouth. He heard a knock from the front door. His body didn’t move from the spot for a long while, a shaky hand running through his blond locks. He heard the same soft rapping and slowly pulled himself from the floor, a soft sigh escaping his lip. As the Hokage, the title seemed half-fulfilling. It would have been better if he was still here...alive...

“Hokage-sama,” a voice called in. Naruto grimaced as he viewed himself in the looking mirror and placed a smile on his face, it looked so fake that he quickly tossed it.

“I’ll be out in a second,” he called to the front. Whoever it was didn't seem to be very patient as he heard the click of the front door.

“Doesn’t anyone respect a fucking Hokage anymore?” he growled, throwing down the towel after wiping his face, and stepping outside the bathroom, feeling for the chakra of his would be visitor.

Kankuro. Karuso. Shaking his head, he saw the puppet out of the corner of his eye; it stood in the corner of the room, looking like its master. Naruto quickly made a few signs and it crumpled to the ground.

“Alright Kankuro, I’d rather talk to you in person than that stupid puppet of yours.” The Hokage said loud enough to be heard from wherever Kankuro was hiding. He heard a string of curses from outside and promptly went to the window, drawing the blinds open. It was so bright out. Suna was always so bright. He squinted and watched as the sand-nin marched around the house to his front door. There was another knock before the door was shoved open rudely.

“Hokage-sama,” said a very testy Kankuro as he gave Naruto a curt bow.

“You know I hate it when people call me that. What do you want? It’s early, and I don’t have the meeting with the other Kage’s until this afternoon,” Naruto said, crossing his arms. He had been residing in Suna for the past week for official Kage business, and Sakura had been told not to let anyone in. He looked over to the door at the thought of the high ranking ninja.

“She decided to take a nap,” the sand puppeteer grunted with a smirk as if he had read his mind. Naruto’s eyes narrowed,

“Chakra induced sleep. Break it before I break the treaty,” Naruto growled in annoyance. The puppeteer reattached the charka strings to his favorite marionette hastily, and Naruto watched as it disappeared out the door.

“So, what is so important that you break into my room and force Sakura to sleep?” he asked, wanting to get this over with. His body was feeling weak from the dream and the queasiness had not quite left his body either.

“My brother wishes to see you,” Kankuro replied slowly, watching as Naruto’s eyes widened a bit in shock.

“The meeting is later today. What can be more important than getting this treaty signed?” Naruto asked carefully, his voice on the edge of anger. He wasn’t in the mood to entertain the Kazekage.

“It’s not about the meetings. He just wishes to see you there.” Kankuro paused hearing a low groan from outside the door and slowly pulled his puppet back into the room “She’s awake. I’ll tell him you'll meet him at the Kage Tower at noon.” The nin disappeared quickly before Naruto could protest.

“But I didn’t…damn it.” He cursed under his breath.

Naruto heard Sakura yawn from outside the door. Arguing not to meet with the Kazekage could prove disastrous. He was a fellow shinobi, Kage…and even a friend. Talking with him had helped in the beginning. His mind wandered back to the reason for his sudden wakefulness and he shuddered, pushing the thoughts away. He didn’t need to keep dwelling on the past. It was over….He was gone….
