Rain on the Sidewalk

Rain on the Sidewalk

Hello, this is my first fanfiction. I have built up my courage and put my own story up here for all to read. After reading so many awesome stories which have inspired me I have written this Sasuke/Naruto AU. I hope people like it, so pretty please tell me what you think. Pretty please with squirrels on top.

I can feel the night beginning.
Separate me from the living.
Understanding me,
After all I've seen.
Piecing every thought together,
Find the words to make me better.
If I only knew how to pull myself apart.

EVANESCENCE

"All That I'm Living For"

Rain made the sidewalk slick so Naruto could see his reflection in the water. He could see glimpses of his tired face between the rain drops, hitting the ground and people walking past.

"Get out of my way brat." Scrambling backwards Naruto pushed back against the door he was sitting against. Scowling Naruto flipped the angry business man off

"Bite Me".

Turning around the man spat at Naruto and kicked the street urchin catching him hard in his side.

"Stupid Filth. Get off the Streets." Not looking back at the blonde, the man returned to walking down the street.

Naruto looked out from under his bangs and stuck out his tongue out at the business man's back. But he kept his mouth shut this time.

Normally, on a cold wet night like this he would be back in his digs, located in an old abandoned building. But some one had found his squat and had trashed his things. Including all his food, and he didn't have the money to get anymore.

They had ripped up his few spare clothes and bedding. Luckily he hadn't been home when whoever had come calling.

So now he was hunched up huddling under this florescent light waiting for this restaurant to shut for the night so he could scrounge food from the kitchens. The cook at this place had a soft spot for the blonde street kid. Who had been scrounging food from him since he was only a kid.

Rubbing his sore ribs Naruto frowned.

"No one notices me except to kick me back down. Bakas."

The boy didn't have much flesh left on his ribs to protect him from the kicks of bastards like that. A harsh life meant he was slender and his muscles were whip cord thin. When people noticed him on the streets they could see the dirt and grime and avoided him.

Though underneath it he was often smiling.

Clutching his bright orange jacket, that was both his favourite and only, to keep out the rain, he felt the cold wind cross his neck and make him shiver. Water dripped down his neck and under his jacket, it made his normally spiky blonde hair hang limp and drip water on his nose.

Naruto had been living on the streets for as long as he could remember. He had been in and out of shelters since he was a small kid. The first thing he remembered was a women screaming, and not happy, 'Oh look I've won the lottery screaming.' This was more of the ' why isn't it stopped bleeding' sort of screaming.

When he had been small he had, had to pick up a lot of things that normal kids who go to schools and have parents don't get to do. He had learnt how to pick pockets from his friend Kiba who with had dog he called Akamaru and had worked out lots of ways of getting money off the stupid people. Naruto was a master as picking pockets. In fact in he though he, was the best ever at picking pockets and there could never be anyone as good as him.

He also knew how to pick locks and break into cars. It all helped when you didn't know where your next meal could come from.

"Damn stupid rain, stupid weather. If I were the weather guy, I'd make it sunny everyday. Stupid weather guy." Unfortunately today the weather was cold and his gloves that he usually wore, so that he could keep his fingers nimble to slip into people's pockets to steal their wallets, had been ripped off in his race from a pimp who had had ideas.

The weather made his hands cramp, and he couldn't feel a thing, it would be like trying to sew with boxing gloves. it took a fine touch to steal for a living.

He didn't want to be caught and sent to jail. Though a nice warm prison cell sounded sort of good right about now.

As rain dripped steadily down his jacket and made him shiver as it ran down his back. Standing up he shook a fist at the dark cloud filled sky.

"Mr. weather man you come down here and I'll beat you so hard."

The door behind him opened and light spilled out onto the sidewalk heady scents of cooking flooded out. "Naruto you again." A loud voice made the still posing boy jump and spin around.

"Yip, me all right."

"Well get in here before my boss see's ya." The kitchen was empty except for the cook and Naruto. Sitting on the stainless steel bench were bowls filled with leftovers from the evening meals. Racing over to the table Naruto got stuck in hovering the food up. Rice and other foods flying everywhere.

"Look at you boy. I keep tellin' ya to get off the streets." Food spraying as he talked Naruto grinned.

"No one I'll have a bastard, like me."

Sighing the cook began to mop the kitchen floor. "I think ya orta know that Garra's out of jail."

"He can't be. He's meant to be in there for another six months." last time Naruto had run into Garra he had been left with a broken leg, six broken ribs and a sprained wrist. It had only been through luck that he hadn't been caught up in a kid's home.

"He smashed up that cop real good. How did he ever get out?"

"I don't know, but he's out and I heard he's looking for ya." Gulping down his food Naruto stuttered.

" I didn't do nuthin'" Naruto tipped a bowl up and slurped up the soup at the bottom. He had never had the chance to learn table manners on the street either.

"I'm safe, no one can touch me. I'm the greatest." Flinging down his plate he struck a poise both hands on his hips.

"No one can touch me."

The cook sighed. and kept moping.

" Naruto, Garra's not going to let ya just walk away. he wasn't happy with ya when he went away. When he finds ya, it aint' going to be pretty." Naruto went quiet for a moment then laughed grinning.

"Stop worrying old man, I haven't got anything to worry about." Smacking his lips Naruto shrugged his jacket up around his ears and waving to the kindly cook walked back out into the rain, he didn't want to have this talk any more.

Ducking low Naruto ran down the sidewalk, with his stomach full and now slightly dry he felt better and just needed a place to sleep for the night. Maybe Sakura would let him crash at her squat. She usually let him sleep at her place when he was hard up.

The rain was still pouring down and made visibility difficult. With out looking he slammed into someone's chest.

"Oh sorry."

Before he could move away with the person's wallet, a hand reached out and snatched at his wrists. The quiet voice made his neck shiver as it slid down his spine like ice.

"What the hell, are you doing?" Trying to step back Naruto looked up into the face of the man he had slammed into.

Dark black hair framed his face and penetrating black eyes made him look like he was peering into Naruto's soul. His beauty made Naruto stare, this guy was good looking, if he hadn't have, been wet cold and holding his wallet he would have stopped to chat.

"Nothin." Leaning back Naruto kicked out and caught the man on his knee breaking his hold on his wrists.

"Yoink."

Keeping the wallet tight in his hand, Naruto turned and dodged down the street sliding past other people on the street. Turning right into a tight alley. Behind him he could hear the man swear and chase after him.

Swinging his head around Naruto stuck out his tongue and laughed at him. "Na, Na ya never going to get me." So when he ran head first into the brick wall at the end of the alley it came as a complete surprise.

Bright lights flashed in front of his eyes and the world started to turn dark. falling down he looked up and saw the pale face of the man who had been chasing him and found the energy to say two more words.

"Your pretty."

With that he fainted.

Stepping out from behind the bar, Sasuke watched the few stragglers for the night wander out the door, the bar's bouncer held open. It was a week night and they closed early it was only 2 am on a Friday and Sunday they could have their doors open as late as 6 am or 7 am.

Pulling his apron off he tossed it onto the counter. Taking his apron off lifted his T-shirt which was black and tight showing off his stomach, the manager insisted that he wore shirts like this.

He just put up with it and couldn't care less, but every time he was forced to smash and empty bottle of someone's head for propositioning him he felt a grain of satisfaction. Untying his headband he gave his forehead a rub and looked around the bar.

It wasn't the hottest place in town but it wasn't a dive either. A stage at the back of the bar had been empty that night but usually they had some band playing on the weekends. Tables were scattered around and couches lined the walls.

Stuck to the walls were old horror movie posters, classic movie posters, from the sixties and earlier. Stuff like Hammer horror movies and other classy films like that. The owner was a big fan off all those old drive in horror movies. But they hadn't been changed for a while and were begging to show their wear.

It was just him and bouncer left to clean up for the night. The owner of the bar, usually left Sasuke to manage by himself most nights. Grabbing a tray he began picking up the empties littering the tables.

Sasuke was only 18 but he had been left on his own for most of his life and had, had to make his own way, for most of it. He had been working in bar's since he could pour a drink and not spill it. He was use to late nights and was working hard to save up money.

"Ya think we need to get another keg out of the back." The bouncer was chucking the empties into the rubbish shot. Sasuke shook his head.

"No, we're good." It didn't take long to clean up the bar for tomorrow night. It wasn't the ritziest place and all it needed was a quick clean.

"It's Dean up tomorrow. His missus is nearly ready to pop soon." Sasuke didn't try to join the bouncer in conversation. The bouncer was new to the bar and would soon learn not to try talking to the fey looking boy.

After locking the bars safe with the nights takings inside Sasuke looked around and shut the doors behind him.

The night was cold and made him fold his collar up around his face. Pulling him umbrella out He stepped out under it. Quickly he walked down the sidewalk keeping his arms in tight he didn't want to touch any one and to reach his apartment quickly so he could get to bed and sleep.

The rain dripped off the ends of his umbrella as he walked. Stopped at lights waiting to walk Sasuke was caught by surprise when some one crashed into him. Looking down he was caught in two startled sapphire blue eyes, surrounded by golden hair, and a very dirty face.

Sasuke grunted, and reached down. He had felt the kid slip his hand into his pocket. "What the Hell are you doing?" It had been a long night and he didn't want it to get any longer.

Snatching at the thief's hand he watched the boys eye's widen in fright, rain dripping down his face.

"Nothin." With that the kid kicked out at Sasuke and caught him hard on his knee, caught by surprised he dropped his umbrella and let go of the kid. Scampering backwards the thief laughed and ran off.

Cursing under his breath Sasuke quickly recovered and ran off after his wallet. Dodging pedestrians Sasuke followed the kid down the street and watched as he turned to taunt him ever few steps, as if he wanted to be caught. Till finally he dashed down an alley, running hard Sasuke was not far behind.

So he was in time to watch the blonde run head first into the brick wall at the dead end. Slowing to a walk the bar tender stopped standing over the thief, kneeling to pick up his wallet, which had fallen from the kids hand he was surprised at a glimpse of bright blue pupils through the blondes almost closed eyes.

"Your pretty."

Sasuke nearly didn't hear him. Sighing he shook his head and as the rain slid down his neck wished he had remembered his umbrella.
