(((Chapter 1 - Eazedropping))
Sleep overtook him the moment he laid his head down. The trials of the day taking their toll on the young shinobi, blessed sleep that delivered Naruto into the subconscious where the chill of the air in the clearing was no longer being registered by mental monitors that would have him normally seek the warmth of the campfire.
Kakashi looked on in envy as his return pupil slipped deeper into a solid slumber.
“Kakashi?” he heard his name queried openly.
“Hmm? Ah.. I’m sorry Tenzou, what did you say?” Kakashi turned his attention away from the dozing blonde and back to his comrade whose head dropped in defeat at hearing Kakashi’s words.
“Kakashi- I really must insist,” he said shaking his head “that you address me by the name Yamato. Being former ANBU I really didn’t think it would be such a hardship to maintain secondary identities.”
Kakashi felt his cheeks redden as smiled, rubbing the back of his head. “Ah! Sorry sorry, Yamato-san. I must have gotten lost in the ideal of teamwork during Naruto’s training and it just slipped.”
“That’s all well and good, but Kakashi- that was the fourth time today.” Yamato replied. “It’s hard to think that such a skilled shinobi as yourself is able to let something as critical as a code name just-slip.”
Kakashi looked at Yamato and smiled even more, squishing his eyes closed in his tell-tale way. “Ah- you are right. I apologize. I’ll make sure to pay better attention to using your code name from now on. So—what was it you were saying before?”
Yamato smirked and nodded, “I was asking if you wanted anymore of the rice before I dump it out.”
“Mmm.. nope. I’m good to go.” He patted his stomach as he leaned back against the log, stretching his legs out in front of him. “All full and ready for some relaxation after a hard day of training.” He finished, reaching in his sidebag for his favorite book, he flipped it open to a very worn page marked by a folded down corner.
“Hard day of training, was it Kakashi? I seem to remember it was I who.. doing most of.. “ Yamato’s voice trailed off as he walked further and further out of earshot.
Kakashi smirked and lowered his eyes to the page in front of him, picking back up at a spot in the paragraph that was always his favorite.
Within a few moments Yamato returned, taking his seat on the log and adding a few more pieces of the wood he had fashioned earlier to the fire in front of them.
Smiling, he watched Kakashi turning the pages of his book as Naruto’s slowed breathing gave away the depth of sleep he had slipped into.
Knowing they were safe within the perimeter of the training grounds Kakashi and he had set up, Yamato placed another log onto the campfire, breaking into a good strong stretch as he watched it settle on top of the rest of the wood, already ablaze.
“.. mmm.. Sasuke.. please.. feels good..”
Yamato stopped dead in mid-stretch, his eyes immediately locked in on the direction of the mumble. His eyebrows scrunched together. Had he just heard what he thought he...? He shot a glance over at Kakashi to see if he had heard that as well and both his eyes and his mouth flew open as he saw Kakashi looking up, past his book, eyes just as wide, staring at Naruto asleep in front of them.
Kakashi blinked a moment, then glanced at Yamato who was sitting to the right of him. Kakashi’s face began a confusing smirk at Yamato as his mouth opened in an attempt to say...something.
“ah.. Sasuke.. I do too.. don’t stop.. it feels good.. mmm yes.. more, more Sasuke..”
Yamato and Kakashi both stared at each other. There was no doubt. They both heard it that time.
Yamato simply stared at Naruto, processing what was unfolding before the both of them, applying new found information to what was assumed to be already solid facts regarding Uzumaki Naruto’s rivalry with Uchiha Sasuke.
Kakashi dropped his book down to his lap, bringing one knee up to his chest, resting his chin in his hand.
“Hnn.” Was all he could say, staring now back at the young genin whose own mind was betraying him by sleep-talking.
“..sasuke.. please.. mmm sasuke.. stay.. please come back..unh.. don’t leave.. im sorry.. sasuke.. its ok.. im sorry too.. just stay here..”
The shock written on Kakashi’s face turned to sympathy hearing Naruto, even in sleep, even in the most private of dreams, beg Sasuke to stay.
“Even in his own dreams, does he fight so desperately for the recognition of his rival..?” Kakashi muttered aloud to Yamato as they both remained locked in the moment.
Naruto muffled in his sleep slightly, raising his arm to his face covering his eyes, clenching his blanket tightly with his other hand. In a moment, his voice was heard, half asleep-half crying as he rolled over, his back now to his teachers- “I’m sorry.. just come back.. don’t leave me alone.” And in another moment, a deep breathing sleep had overtaken him, whisking him off into another round of slumber.
Yamato slid down to sit on the ground next to Kakashi answering him, “I don’t think Naruto sees Sasuke as ‘just a rival’ anymore, Kakashi.”
“.. Ah.” Kakashi agreed. “Things seem to have become more complicated.”
“And clearer- when you think about it.” Yamato suggested.
