Old Friends

The little blond boy dragged himself from the alley where the villagers had left him. He didn't know why they always beat him and threw things at him, but it didn't hurt as bad as when they called him names or ignored him. At least they were acknowledging his existance. He stumbled back to his tiny, dilapidated apartment. No one bothered him there. As far back as he could remember, he had lived there, alone. Just as he got the door unlocked, he felt a prescence behind him. Quickly turning, he gazed into cold onyx eyes.

"Naruto-kun," the boy, no older than nine or ten, said in a monotone. "The villagers hurt you again. Let's get you cleaned up." He reached past the blond and opened the door, ushering the smaller boy in ahead of him. After closing and locking the door, the older boy went to the kitchen and, grabbing a dishtowel, ran water in the sink. "Come here."

The younger boy, Naruto, walked into the kitchen and stood in front of the other boy, gazing up at him curiously. What did he want him for? No one else ever spoke to him willingly, or offered to take care of his injuries. In fact, no one ever called him by name. He watched as the dark-haired boy wet the towel. When the other brought the towel to Naruto's face, he flinched away. Was he going to smother him?

"Naruto-kun, I'm just going to wash the blood off so we can see how badly you're injured."

Naruto submitted to having his face washed. It felt weird; nobody had touched him before without causing him pain. After he was clean, the boy peered critically at his face, scowling a bit. It was the first sign of emotion the older boy had shown.

"I think you'll be okay. By the way, I'm Itachi. If they hurt you again, look for me. I'll help you. Are you hungry?"

The blond stared up at his savior, trying to figure out what the deal was. The other boy, Itachi, didn't call him demon or monster, or try to hit him. In fact, he was 'nice' to the blond. No one was EVER nice to him. Well, except the old man, but he was too busy to spend any time with Naruto. Now, Itachi was asking him if he was hungry. Did that mean Itachi wanted to share a meal with him? Only one way to find out. "Hai," he said shyly.

"Good!" Itachi said with a slight smile. "Let's go. What do you like to eat?"

"Um...ramen?"

"Then ramen it is." Without further ado, he pushed the younger boy out the door ahead of him, locking it behind them. Grabbing the blond's hand, he set off down the street, dragging the little boy after him.

People stared as they passed. What was the Uchiha prodigy doing with that monster?! Maybe he had caught the creature stealing or something. Maybe he was going to punish him! A few got up the nerve to follow. All were astonished when the Uchiha stopped at Ichiraku Ramen, and helped the smaller boy onto a seat at the counter. The Uchiha turned to the onlookers and flashed his Sharingan in displeasure. They quickly dispursed, finding other things more important to do.

Old man Teuchi asked for their order. Itachi told Naruto to tell the man what he wanted. With a fearful look in his eyes, Naruto asked, "Can I have a bowl of miso ramen, onegai?"

The old man smiled at the little blond. "Of course. And what will you be having Uchiha-san?"

Itachi ordered the same, and said to get anything else that Naruto wanted. With another smile, Teuchi set about making up their order.

"That was great, Itachi-san! Domo arigato! Are you a ninja? I want to be a ninja some day! Can you teach me how? I'll do almost anything to learn how to become one!" The blond boy was jumping around as he spoke. It was as though someone being nice to him had triggered his hyperactive nature.

Itachi smirked. This kid was really something! How could anyone NOT like him? But then he thought of what the boy housed, and he realized that was all the other villagers saw when they looked at Naruto. Even his parents were prejudiced against the child. Well, he wasn't going to be like all the rest. He would judge the boy on his own merits, and so far, he liked what he saw. He took Naruto to the training grounds and began to teach him how to throw a punch, and kick effectively.
