he says forget what you have to do

pretend there is nothing outside this room

and like and idea he came to me

but he came too late or maybe too soon

The room was cold and dark, Sasuke stared at the things around him. He felt like he should be packing things, but every time he started getting things out he decided he didn't really need them, and put them back away. He knew he'd be leaving everything behind, he needed to leave everything here. He had to do it, to cut the ties he'd made here. Naruto was right, he was bound here by connections now, little lines that were not quite kashi(1), because that he understood.

The knock at the door jarred him form his brooding. He didn't have to go until tomorrow, and he had told himself a thousand times he was not going to run off early, like some eager little lap dog. He had a life, important things to do. AT least, he'd thought so, even though now that it came down to it he was still sitting in a dark room alone, trying not to talk himself out of leaving. He had to leave.

He got up reluctantly, not sure who could possibly be coming right now, of all the disastrous times. He paused, his hand not really touching the knob yet and considered not opening it, pretending he wasn't here. The small sound of a throat clearing from the other side signalled him that whoever it was knew he was standing there, and he cursed under his breath. There was nothing to do for it now. He opened the door, but didn't undo the chain lock.

It thumped to a stop within three inches of opening, and the face staring back at him gave him pause. Shikamura. Of all the people he had half expected to come to him tonight, this boy wasn't anywheres near the list. He had always gotten a distinct impression that the lazy ass hated him. So why was he here. He lifted one perfectly sculpted eyebrow at his visitor, trying to scowl but not quite having the energy.

"Sasuke, I need to talk to you, can you let me in." His voice was clear and even. Sasuke grunted.

"There's plenty of room to talk this way Nara." Shikamura sighed, mumbling something under his breath about having to go to all this damn trouble.

"You're leaving, aren't you?" Sasuke's eyes went wide for a second before he caught himself, pushing the mask he wore back into place. No one was supposed to know. It was supposed to be a secret. He sighed, closing the door a little and undoing the lock. This was not a conversation he was willing to have outside, this needed to be private.

As he stepped back, the other boy slouched past him. He should have realized Shika would be the one to figure everything out. He was smart, that one, too fucking smart for his own good sometimes. He supposed everyone would know by tomorrow night anyways, and it didn't look like the shadow nin had brought an army of angry ANBU to his door or anything so he supposed he'd be alright.

He turned to the other boy, facing him with a glare.

"Alright, well I'll get down to it then. Sasuke, you shouldn't leave, it doesn't make sense at all.-" He put a hand up to stop Sasuke's angry response with a shake of his head. "- Now personally, I don't give a crap if you leave, hell I don't even like you. But it will cause problems, and I'll have to deal with them. You leaving will hurt a whole lot of people here, people I do care about in one way or another. Now, Is there anything I can do to convince you to stay?"

I said, please try not to love me

close your eyes, I'm turning on the light

You know I have no vacancies

and it's awfully cold outside tonight

Sasuke stood, looking the boy in the face. His uncertainties came rushing back in on his. What was he doing, doing this? It wasn't like Orochimaru was that much more powerful than Itachi, at least from what he'd seen so far. Was this really a mistake?
He chewed on his lip, not aware of the indecision written across his face. He felt weak then, and confused, like he had before. Sitting in the dark there was doing nothing to reassure him either.

He wasn't sure what he was looking for when he surged forwards, he felt like he wanted to hit the other boy. That must have been why he grabbed his collar, twisting the fabric between his fingers. It was merely a slip when their faces were that close, he faltered, his other hand falling to the boy's chest.

There must have been something of that showing in his eyes, because he barely registered Shika's hand on his cheek, the other boy's eyes confused for a second before they resolved themselves. It was Shikamura who leaned in first, pressing their lips together lightly, almost a question, instead of the answer Sasuke had been looking for. It surprised him to say the least, but he couldn't bring himself to pull back.

He'd never done anything like this before, he didn't let anyone close enough to do it with, even though the list of people who would love to was longer than the list of all the awful this his asshole brother had done to him, or was still capable of doing. Something in this contact though, it quieted that desperate little voice in the back of his head, the one that told him he shouldn't be leaving, the one that said it was all a mistake.

Then there are tentative fingers in his hair, stroking lightly, and he doesn't have to think about that any more, because there are nicer things to think about, like skin on his own, and how nice the warm tongue in his mouth feel sliding against his teeth. He's not sure how things moved so fast, every thing was blurry, and the next thing he registers is the warm hand cupping him through his shorts, when he can't even remember getting hard.

the rain stains the brick a darker red

slowly I'm rolling out of his bed

and the rain stains the streets a darker black

I dress my face in stone

cause I can't go back

The afterwards is all calm and warmth, the darkness around them like a blanket. Sasuke feels safe then, a little more sure. He wants to stay, the futon the stumbled onto halfway through it's own little universe, where nothing has to happen, nothing is wrong, and no one has to leave. The insistent push of the sun on the horizon brings it back though, like the beams of morning heat that will burn the dew off the grass outside by 9. Everything sets in his mind then, as he rolls off the soft surface. There are things he still has to do, no matter what.

He rises, and h hears the shift of the warm body on the futon behind him, pushing up from under the blankets. He looks over his shoulder to see half asleep eyes. The boy pushed his elbows under him, arching his back, stretching it idly. Sasuke's breath catches in his throat. But he has to go.

"You're not leaving, are you? Not after that..." Shika's voice is thick with sleep, relaxed and lazy as stares from half lidded eyes. Sasuke shivers slightly under the gaze, shaking his head.

"No, I just have to pee." The lie falls off his tongue automatically, falling to rest between them. Shika flops back down onto the mattress, pulling the blankets up.

Sasuke closes the door quietly, stepping into the small living room. He finds his clothing as quickly as he can, grabbing each piece from where it was thrown and putting each one on in order, strapping the braces of shuriken on each leg, his kunai holster on his belt, each one sharpened and shines meticulously during the long wait of yesterday.

He glances back at the door briefly before he slips out the front, leaving the last one he'd ever expected to care sill cocooned in his blankets, warm and safe and sleeping. He could see it in his eyes that he hadn't believed the words he'd spoken, and he smiled at the fact that the boy just let him go.

he says forget what you have to do

pretend that theres nothing outside this room

and like an idea he came to me

but he came too late, or maybe too soon...

(1)kashi is the web of social obligations that connects people. It is a subtle intricacy that is very important to Japanese society. Kind of hard to explain, especially when im this half awake.
