At the Memorial
Summary: The evening before Raven's test to become a Jounin Kakashi visits the memorial and remembers an old friend from his past. He also thinks about why he misses his other friends so much and the reason he continues to mourn their deaths even now.
*****************************
His visibal eye reads a name he hadn’t thought about in nearly five years. “It’s been a long time Hino-san,” he says softly. “Hokage-sama wants me and Fei to test Raven to see if he’s ready to become a Jounin tomorrow. I decided to visit you tonight so that I don’t dishonor you by showing up late like always.”
As Fei had stated that afternoon Hino Hiroku had been the Captain of Kakashi’s ANBU Squad. Though Kakashi had only worked under the man for a year before Hino retired the two had become friends. Kakashi had attended Hino’s wedding and had even visited the village Hino and his wife had moved to after his Captain’s retirement.
The year before Hino’s death his wife had given birth to twin boys. Kakashi had intended to visit the family but his missions made that impossible at the time. Now that Hino’s widow and sons were living inside the Hiroku compound Kakashi couldn’t bring himself to see them.
Five years a go a group of missin-nin had attacked Hino’s village forcing the former Konoha shinobi to fight to protect his home and his family. Hino Hiroku had single-handedly fought and killed all twelve missin-nin before dying from his injuries.
“You lead a good full life and I’ve always envied you for that Hino-san.” He admits aloud. “You had a beautiful wife and two healthy sons. You had everything a man could ever hope to want and you gave your life so that your family could be safe. There is no higher honor then that my friend.”
Of all the friends Kakashi had lost over the years Hino Hiroku was the only one he had never mourned. Mostly because Hino was the only one of his friends to settle down and have a family. All the others had died before they had that chance and Kakashi always felt like they had so much left to live for but not Hino.
Hino had lived his life and though Kakashi couldn’t bare the thought of visiting the man’s wife and children it wasn’t because they reminded him of his lost friend it was the fact they reminded him of what his other friends could have had if they had lived long enough.

A/N: This was originally the beginning of Chapter ten of my Shadow Shinobi story but I felt it was good enough to stand on its own as a missing moment since the effect would have been somewhat cheapened otherwise.
