From Friends to Beyond

Chapter One: Captive

Sasuke stared wide-eyed as he looked from the tree branch into Naruto’s window. The entire floor was covered in sand and blood, while Naruto was nowhere to be seen. Sasuke shivered as he finally convinced himself to leap from the branch into the small apartment. He nearly slipped and slammed into the wall on the wet sand. Regaining his footing he straightened himself up and looked around the space. Food was still out and the chairs were turned in odd angles as they were tilted, flipped over, and faced each other. Upon further inspection, he noticed that even the table had sand upon it. His brow furrowed in confusion as he walked back to the bedroom. The door was partly cracked open and he was becoming more and more disturbed by the silence that had been greeting his ears. Pushing the door open slowly, he peered inside and all the muscles in his body tightened at the scene before him. The bed was made up perfectly as if it was never slept in and the only dirt anywhere was the small bit of sand that had leaked under the door. He growled at the emptiness and took off out the window and into the trees, his senses on high alert to find Naruto.

Naruto slowly opened his eyes to the world around him, cringing at the sudden invasion of small bits of sand to his azure orbs. He sat up swiftly blinking his eyes rapidly, as his tear ducts kicked into action and watered his eyes up to relieve the blonde ninja from the sand. After a minute his eyes were finally freed from the torment of the sand, but now stood red from the irritation. Coughing haggardly from a dry throat, he leaned over his crossed legs and spat out the sand in his mouth along with a little blood. He stared at it for a moment before remembering the horrid sand storm that blasted through his window last night.

“Ow…what happened…?” Naruto asked in a soft hoarse whisper.

“I took you away from the world that has wronged you.” The voice was soft and deep, full of sorrow.

Naruto pushed back his long bangs off his face as he looked toward the direction the voice was coming from. Now a grown man of nineteen, Naruto was muscularly toned. He had let his hair grow out to a shaggy shoulder length of varying degrees of gold from the time spent in the sun. Thanks to the Kyuubi his body was free of scars, and some of them he regretted not getting to keep. He shifted slowly to stand up and as he moved his right foot, it felt heavy and clanked against the rough floor.

“Wha…” he looked down and grabbed the big black chain attached to the thick cuff around his ankle. “Hey! What’s going on here?!” His voice was slightly panicked and full of anger.

“It’s like I’ve said…I have taken you away from the world that has wronged you. I have brought you across the lands to give to you what you and I truly deserve.”

“What the hell is that supposed to mean?! Who are you anyway?” Naruto was getting unnerved as he pulled at the chain.

“It has been four years since we last saw each other Uzumaki Naruto…” A tall slender figure in loose clothing stepped forward into the pale light of the cell. Long red hair was pulled back into a ponytail and shaggy bangs loosely covered pale turquoise eyes. The dark circles that he was so well known for were now gone.

“G...Gaara!” Naruto’s eyes widened and he involuntarily reached for Gaara, falling when the chain pulled on his ankle. He hit the floor hard landing on his right forearm and his left palm. Wincing in pain he looked up at Gaara in confusion. “Why have you done this to me? I thought we were friends now.”

“We are friends Naruto…but you must be punished for leaving me alone for so long again. Only when you have realized that you were wrong for that, can we regain our friendship fully again. I have to tell you though that I have missed you…” Gaara squatted down and leaned his face in close to Naruto’s, who just stared at him in disbelief. “Truly missed you…”

“Gaara what are you…” Naruto’s eyes widened beyond their normal expression of shock as Gaara cut off his question with a soft kiss. Gaara’s lips, though they were gentle, stung against Naruto’s causing him to pull back and touch his lips. They hurt. They were so dry they were split and crusted with a little blood.

Gaara merely looked at him. Slowly standing up, Gaara turned and walked from the room to leave Naruto to his thoughts in the cool dark dungeon in which he was chained.
