One Word

Hello everyone, well I was just kicking around some ideas and wanted to know what you thought of one of them. Rehab is still my first priority so don’t think I’m giving up on it. Though I do enjoy vampire fics and thought I’d give one a try. Let me know what you think.

Disclaimer- I stake no claim to Naruto and company (hehe did you see the pun in that!)

Pairing- Sasuke x Naruto, others to appear later on.

This was beta'd by the ever wonderful Shinkamigrl!

| | | | | | Okie Pokie let's get started!

I enjoy these nights.

The nights my mind is plagued by images of you. The nights where your scent burns my nose, your taste lingers on my tongue.

Oh my sweet devotion, how I crave you my midnight prince. The day, she tells me I can’t have you. That you are destined for greatness, and my presence will only hold you back. I have committed so many sins against man. Yet she tells me my sins were done for survival. I feed on the lives of those you will be one day sworn to protect. I steal their young and ravish their women, feast on their men. Though you know nothing of me my young prince, no…for those eyes so cold like the winters rain have never laid eyes on me.

Do you wish to see me, my dark prince? Do you wish to see the face that watches you in your restless slumber? Long to feel my breath like a ghost of a whisper against your neck? I wander this world searching for others like you, in hope of curing my lust for something I can not have. Only night after night to show up empty handed. How is it that I, the undead am haunted by you, the living? By you a child of the day born from the breath of the heavens and the womb of the earth, the same heard that I could only dream to lie in rest one day.

What spell have you cast upon me? Why am I shivering in my slumber from a frost that has yet to come? I feel nothing. I want nothing, I am a hollow shell of man who would lie in the path of the morning sun if only to see the light kiss your face.

…Though…this night. I leave you. I leave you for my time has come. For ages my clan has remained strong defending our home and land from the ones that fear us. Though they fear us no longer my darling, the wish to be rid of my kind, wretched pounds of flesh! Fearing what they do not understand and can not control. I will not be broken; I will not be slain by their hand. I swear on my father’s grave I shall not! Though…I must go, for the four Lords have been called, and I am needed. Though I fear for you, one who is so young and forced to bear with so much, who will watch over you? Who will protect you on your mid-night rides? It troubles me…

With this letter I tell you of my feelings, my devotion, for I show you…My Midnight Prince my weakness. You know not the power you possess, for I smell the death your father reeks of, and his time grows short. I wonder…you will be able to rule without me by your side? You are strong and soon the whole kingdom will know of it. One day I will return for you, I will show myself to you and speak these words from my lips.

Will you wait for me?

Will you look forward to my return?

One these nights, I think of you…I know from this moment on…you shall think of me too.

Forever your captive,
Lord of Southern Lands.

Ivory fingers trembled with indescribable emotion. The words had penetrated though his body and tainted his very soul. How, how could someone write such beautiful words, the trembling had passed from his fingers to his arms, his shoulders until he was left collapsed on his knees on the hand polished wooden floors. His eyes scanned the letter once more, trying to find a clue. Anything to help ease his mind as to who this Lord was!

“…He speaks…he speaks as if he knows me…”

“He does my Lord.” Lifting his head in a startled gasp his found the messenger sent to deliver his beloved letter.

“How…how long has he been watching me?” Without caring his black eyes fell back towards the paper in his hands.

His slender pale fingers floated over the fine hand writing, each letter written with perfection in mind. The grace and power of this man could be found in the Lord’s damn handwriting; his own still quick and shaky. It showed his lack of control. Folding the letter back up, he clenched it to his chest. Raven bangs falling like a curtain before his eyes. This man…this man loved him. Though the words were vacant from the letter the emotion was made clear.

“From my understanding…He witnessed your birth, you sparked his curiosity…and he has been watching you ever since.”

A small smile played across the young prince’s lips. His eyes closed in peace, the night his mother had died; he’d slept as if he was being held in the arms of a lover. Protected, cherished, loved, only to awaken to find him self alone. Though the feel lingered with him from then until this moment, for the first time tonight he truly felt alone.

“Was that you…has it always been you?” His whisper did not fall on deaf ears.

Though the messenger chose not to speak, his warm brown eyes turned toward the night sky landing on the moon. Soon the sun would rise, and time was growing short. He must move quickly if he hoped to return to his master. Though he sighed looking at the stunned child before him, he didn’t look older than a young boy of fourteen. How could his master think the child was ready to know of his feelings at such a young age? It was not his place to speak on such matters; still, it bothered him greatly. Moving toward the boy with years of grace and stealth on his side, he knelt down placing a chilling hand on the boy’s shoulder. He jerked; found the remains of tear streaks running down his pale cheeks. His bottom lip the color of a freshly blossomed rose, from where he’d bitten it to silence his whimpers.

“My master…hoped you’d have something to give him in return.” He kept his voice to a whisper not wanting to startle the boy anymore.

Blinking back tears, the boy looked down once again chewing on his bottom lip in thought. What to give…

Smirking, his stood up his long night gown flapping around his calves as he rushed over to his desk snatching up the first piece of paper he could find he flopped down in the velvet stump and quickly beginning his reply. The return letter lacked the passion of the one he had received, but it was short and to the point and he hoped it would be what the Lord hoped for. Smirking at his handy work, he closed his eyes, lifting his hands to his neck reaching of the clasp of his chain. The silver chain was a family possession, and to be passed down to his own heir. The Lord was right; his father was ill, and he feared his own death, wanting to give it to the prince now before it was too late. Looking down at it he sighed, though never doubting if this was the right thing to do or not. Dangling from the center of the chain was a circle charm. For within the circle stood his family crest, the beloved Uchiha fan, made from white gold and rubies. Leaning down his signed his name to the letter before folding it up and sealing it with wax and placing the Uchiha seal on it as well.

“Take this to your master.” His voice, though he was young, was cold and commanding.

Odd coming from a boy who had been crying on his bedroom floor moments ago; human children were an odd sort.

“I shall.” Reaching for the letter, the teen only snatched it back looking and bit nervous.

“See…see that he gets this as well…” His other hand held out his necklace the crest, shining with the light of the moon falling though the open balcony doors.

“Very well.” Taking the two items in hand he bowed graceful to the young prince who nodded in return without warning he dashed off leaping from the balcony into the night. His body giving away to the air becoming a mass of black winged bats spreading across the sky. The prince ran to the balcony’s edge watching with great fascination the winged creatures take flight into the night. The maids and guards spoke of these creatures; they lived off the blood of others. Childish stories he’d taken them to be. Only now did they not seem too childish. Not when one had come to him, awakening him from his sleep to deliver the letter that had somehow changed his life. His bedroom door was thrown open, his older brother looking concerned.

“Sasuke…are you well?” Turning the boy nodded smiling lightly at his brother.

“Yes Itachi, I’m fine. I only wanted some air.” Sasuke turned back to the sky only to find it clear of everything but stars.

“I heard voices….are you alone?” Sasuke frowned taking a deep breath he turned to his brother once more.

“I am always alone…there was no one here you need not worry…you should go…father needs you.”

“Sasuke…” Itachi knew the death of their father would cause a rift between them, though it was not his intention for that to happen.

“I’m fine…it’s late…and I need my rest. Good night brother.”

“Good night Sasuke.” Itachi bowed his head to his little brother before exiting the room.

Sasuke sighed, moving to grab the letter from his desk and carrying it back with him to bed. Climbing into the massive of sheets, blankets and pillow he snuggled in, draping the cover over his body. His letter tucked neatly beneath his pillow as his mind dreamt up an image to go with the words he’d read tonight.

Black pools watched the skies sighing in relief when the image of bats could be seen just over the valley’s opening. It would seem this would take forever, though there was still some time and they could continue to move forward in their travels.

“My Lord….it seems the messenger you sent has returned.” Glancing over his shoulder his body shivered as his master rose from his place in the shadows.

Hair spun of gold dusted over his forehead while the rest was tucked back neatly in a low ponytail at the nape of his neck. His striking blue eyes lifted toward the sky, a wicked smile forming on his lips.

“It seems he has Sai…I was starting to worry.”

The two watched the mass of bats swam in a formation as if they had been caught in a tornado. Stepping out from the center was the young male, a letter in one hand the charm in the other. Kneeling, his kept his eyes on the ground since he was in no place to meet his master’s eyes, he lifted his package.

“He sends these my Lord.” His voice showed his submissive nature.

“Very good…you’re dismissed.”

Taking his items, he nodded his thanks as the man once again vanished in the same manner he had shown up. Moving back some, he opened the letter, his anticipation hard to hide, but Sai tossed a streak of hair behind his ear leaning over the blond’s shoulder to read the letter.

“…That’s it?!” Sai hissed.

Smirking at the clever mind of the young prince the blond nodded, “It would seem so.”

“‘Yes’…. We waited all this time for one stupid word…all it says is ‘yes’!”

Turning, the blond attached the necklace around his neck, tucking it beneath his chest as he began to walk off into the night, Sai following angrily after him.

“Sai…sometimes…one word is all you need. With time you will understand this…you are still young. I have much to teach you.”

“Yes Master…” Frowning, Sai continued to follow the blond as the shadows of the night consumed them both.
