Hyuuga Neji had never been slow in anything, always the first to pick up on the intricacies of new techniques and the hidden meanings in old texts. He read the people around him in the same way, sounding out their personality through carefully worded questions. He would take note of the little ways their bodies fidgeted at the sound of his voice, or whether they inched closer or further when he approached. It was a little game he played with himself, to see who was genuinely comfortable with him and who was simply pretending.

In the beginning, Neji had no interest in Hinata outside of proving to her that she was useless, valueless, and unworthy of being the heir to the Hyuuga clan. To say that he had been jealous of her status would have been an understatement, and at one point in life, he had wanted nothing more to make her feel the same way he had felt. Confined and constricted to one destiny, one fate.

He had managed to do it, too. He had managed to show her how futile her adopted ‘never-give-up’ attitude was. It wasn’t until then, either, that Neji had realized that the way Hinata was fighting the inevitability of her failure, was the same way he was fighting against his duties as a member of one of the Hyuuga clan’s branch houses. It was then that he realized that he and Hinata had more in common than just their family name.

Yet, despite the way Neji had treated her, Hinata still seemed to like him. And although she had never spent much time with Neji previously, after their battle, she dropped by more often. At first, in Neji’s opinion, it was rather unexpected. Though he had realized his own errors, he hadn’t expected Hinata to see them. He had expected her to avoid him, as he was the source of a large part of her inadequacies. He stomped on all of her beliefs because his felt crushed from the start. Instead, both of their failures to be more than they were bound them to each other.

Looking back, Neji found that fate played with a strange deck of cards.

For months Hinata was quiet, observing Neji in her reserved, shy way. She didn’t make herself distractingly obvious, nor did she interfere with any of his meditation or training sessions. She just sat there, watching as his hair slowly fell out of its bindings with each carefully executed attack. Hinata didn’t offer to train with Neji, to perhaps ask him to help her better her techniques like he originally thought she would. She was just there, a silent companion, like the whisper of wind against the forest trees.

Eventually, though, Hinata approached him with words. His back was turned to her as he pulled his hair back into place, but when she spoke in a soft, barely audible whisper, it didn’t startle him. It was merely unexpected. He looked over his shoulder at her as she challenged him plainly, non-threateningly. Her pale eyes and small smile were playful as she fell into a familiar stance, and so Neji agreed, mimicking her movements. He wasn’t looking for a replay of the Chuunin exams, and apparently, neither was Hinata.

It only took seconds to notice that Hinata improved a lot. As time passed between them in the form of thrusts and parries, for a blissful second, Neji had the distinct feeling that he could get used to having someone around other than TenTen and Lee. There were moments during their sparring where there was a stalemate; Hinata deflected Neji’s blows and he evaded hers, dancing just out of the reach of her open palmed attack. When Neji managed land a hit Hinata only gave him enough leeway to disable one of her tenketsu, before she was striking back, landing a similar stroke.

As he skirted around another of Hinata’s advances, his hair whipped around her eyes, blinding her for just the moment Neji needed to deliver the final, decisive blow. With a barely concealed yelp, Hinata was crumpling to the soft grass of the forest, shaking with exertion. But when she peered up, Neji noticed that she was grinning, wider than he’d ever seen before.

Though he wouldn’t do so normally, Neji reached out to Hinata, helping her to her feet. Hinata bowed politely and parted with an uncharacteristically cheerful wave; Neji found himself refreshed, and went home that night, actually looking forward to next morning’s routine.

The next few weeks passed by in relaxed familiarity. Neji trained at the same place, the same time, and Hinata was there too, back to watching unobtrusively. At some point, Neji wanted to approach Hinata and be the first one to extend the offer of a challenge. Being the challenger and on her own terms, Hinata had seemed comfortable and fluid that very first time. If Neji were to offer, would she still be at ease, or would she suddenly worry of an ulterior motive? To Neji, this was more than a test of abilities, but a test of character.

If Hinata passed, Neji would allow her in.

Neji waited a few days after his decision to approach Hinata. He needed no words, opting to simply drop into position and beckon to her with a flick of his wrist. Hinata’s expression was one of pleasant surprise, but Neji felt no tension. There was the instant of inactivity when they both activated the byakugan, and then there was life. Hinata came at Neji quick and strong, forcing him into constant defense. He could evade only enough to make sure that he didn’t find himself stuck between Hinata and a tree, yet he was fighting just as hard, just as serious as before.

Moments elapsed in a blur and then Neji was on his back, shadowed by a victorious Hinata. Neji couldn’t find where he went wrong, where his concentration broke, but he shrugged it off. Even if he had not been successful in winning his own challenge, he had succeeded in bringing Hinata’s personality to the forefront. She didn’t gloat as she sat down beside him, pushing hair away from her eyes. It was then Neji actually noticed Hinata; it was then that he saw that she was more than just the heir of the clan he hated he was born into. She was a woman, beautiful and strong in her own way.

And she spoke to him as a woman, not as a ninja or his superior. Neji listened to her soft voice as she explained her reasons behind her actions. Her consistent observations, her challenge, and her response to Neji’s issued challenge. It was only because she liked him? It caught Neji off guard to know, finally, why Hinata had been so persistent. Neji had to stop and think about that, but he couldn’t find a reason why he shouldn’t believe Hinata. Lost deep in that train of thought, Neji only barely noticed Hinata inching closer; when he finally turned to ask Hinata why she was so near, he was stopped dead in his tracks by Hinata’s lips abruptly meeting his.

Neji toppled over and Hinata came with him, sprawling on top of him. Hinata’s palms were pressed flat against Neji’s shoulders — whether it was because it felt good, or to ensure that Neji wouldn’t try to shy away from her tongue twining around his, Neji couldn’t place. Hinata was relentless in her endeavor, leading Neji down a new path previously unconsidered. Neji’s hands traced the curve of Hinata’s body; she fit nicely against him, more so than he would have thought she would, and the little noises Hinata made were pleasantly addictive. Neji found his palms roaming over Hinata’s body freely, searching out the places that would make her sound like that again.

Over and over, inches of flesh were revealed, and their bodies made electric contact. Neji was in new territory, with nothing but instinct to guide him through the maze that was Hinata. Depthless, endless, Hinata drew Neji in. Instead of becoming clearer, she had only draped a more mysterious air about herself, and naturally, that piqued Neji’s inner inquisitor.

Instantly, laughter scattered Neji’s thoughts. He had been thinking of Hinata again, much to his own chagrin. The times he remembered were long since gone, thrown to the wind like the ashes of a burnt tree. He almost felt bitter at the way Hinata lead him on. Maybe it was payback, or maybe she didn’t mean it, but Neji did not appreciate her parting words at their last meeting. He had known for a long time that Hinata harbored a crush on Naruto, even when she slept in his bed and had her arms thrown about his neck in passion, but Neji didn’t expect it to come back and bite him in his ass like it did.

Neji snorted and stood from where he sat. Hinata said that she only had one more dream to fulfill, that she would be back for him. That then, she would be his forever.

Neji, on the other hand, doubted he would wait around that long.
