Love

This idea just struck me and wouldn’t leave me alone. For starters, I think we all know that stage in a relationship when you just completely idolize the person you’re with, when every look in their eyes is important and it’s not what they say but how they say it that makes all the difference. The time of pure bliss and extreme fragility – and complete and total idiocy. People in love sometimes provide a perfect walking visual for the word “lunatic” – surely everyone experienced (or been subjected to) the sweeter-than-candy-apple conversations or the sappy love letters that are borderline creepy along with the dog-like devotion that is borderline obsession. Fortunately (or unfortunately, depending on how you look at it), the feeling wears off after a while, swapping places with comfort and intimacy OR seeing you and your sweetie off in the opposite directions. BUT! Sometimes people stay together, their union fueled by a memory of that constant “high” rather then situation at hand. I tried to depict that sort of relationship in this story. No surprise here – it’s SasuSaku (did you ever realize that the spell-checker’s first suggestion for the correction of SasuSaku is Sausage? LOL…erm, anyways XD ) On to the story!

Warning: Contains character deaths.

Summary: A promise made in the days of affectionate bliss is brought up three years later. Can love ever truly be routine? SasuSaku

The soft rays of moonlight lit up the room softly. The sinuous shadows crept all over the small space, the darkest of them concentrated in the centre of the room where two figures sat on a couch, two pairs of eyes staring adoringly at the other.

“Do you love me, Sakura?”

“I love you, Sasuke-kun.”

Their whispers were as soft as the gentle breeze rustling the leaves outside.

“How much do you love me, Sakura?”

“Enough to die for you, Sasuke-kun.”

Their soft breathing and sweet nothings was the only thing disturbing the serene quiet of a late summer night.

“Me too, Sakura. I love you so much. I don’t think I’ll ever get enough of you.”

“Will you be with me always, Sasuke?”

“Forever and ever, baby.”

Sasuke wrapped his arms protectively around his lovely Sakura, sighing contently into her strawberry hair. Sakura, in turn, threw her arms over her lovely Sasuke’s torso, hugging him tightly. If the world would end right then, neither would care enough to break their embrace. Sakura smiled into the boy’s chest.

Then she frowned.

“Sasuke?”

“Hmm?”

“You know…I’ve always been told that…well…love doesn’t last forever.”

The hug suddenly stiffened.

“This isn’t going to happen to us though? Right, Sasuke?”

Sasuke’s breathing wasn’t being very informative.

“Right?”

The boy released his grip on his pink-haired wonder.

“Let’s make a promise, baby. If we ever…If one of us ever starts loosing this feeling…If our love ever becomes mundane…Let’s die. Together. Let’s not let out love fade away.”
Sasuke couldn’t see Sakura smile in the dark, her eyes welling up with tears all the while. Nor did he need to. The girl nearly squeezed the life out of her precious Sasuke when she tackled him, throwing her arms around his neck.

“Oh, Sasuke! I’m so happy!”

Burying his hands in Sakura’s pink locks, Sasuke closed his eyes and sighed. He was in heaven.

Three Years Later

He was in hell.

“Sasuke!”

Thud.

“Sasuke!!”

The sound of approaching footsteps.

“Sasuke, are you at home?! Come help me carry these damn groceries upstairs!!!”

Sasuke sighed, as irritated as skin with a rug burn. Where did things go wrong? When had his precious, gentle, little girl become a bossy, grouchy woman who never knew when to keep her mouth shut?

Sakura stomped up the stairs of their home, purposely trying to make as much noise as possible. She was damn near tears. Sasuke promised he’d meet her after she was done shopping. Sakura came out and stood outside of the store for 30 minutes like an idiot. Obviously, Sasuke never showed up. He never did what he said he would these days. He just didn’t care enough to anymore. When did her precious, caring man become the useless crybaby boy he was now?

And there he was. Sitting on the couch, not even bothering to turn around and face her. Mister dark and brooding as always. Lately, that’s all Sakura had seen him do – just sit there on that damn couch and attempt to look like he was thinking about something. As if there were any rational thoughts in that empty head of his!

Really, Sakura didn’t feel like arguing. Not today. Not after this house has heard nothing but arguments for the past two months. She simply threw a can of tuna at the arrogant back of his head. It was seriously getting on her nerves, the way it was just there.
Sasuke yelped as the force of the impact almost made a dent in his skull, sending him forward until his almost fell onto his knees.

He turned slowly, rubbing the back of his head, to see Sakura’s face twisted in anger, her breath coming in heavy pants.

“Thanks for meeting me today, “darling”!” Sakura spat the last word out like it tasted bad.

Sasuke was now seeing how right he was in his musings. Right there, in the flesh, was the living breathing proof of his hard-hitting conclusions. Their love was now mundane. It was official. They’ve become the couple who argued over whose turn it was to take out the trash or wash dishes. It wasn’t that they didn’t care for one another anymore. Oh no! Indifference constituted a total lack of feeling. Sasuke and Sakura, however, had many feelings towards one another – the prevalent one being the desire to get their hands on the other’s most erogenous zone – their neck!

“Sakura…”

Sasuke came towards her slowly. He had plenty of time to mull this over since they weren’t speaking to each other most of the time lately.

“Do you remember that promise we made? About three years ago?”

What promise?”

“…If we ever turn into…well whatever we are now….”

Sakura stared at Sasuke like he was insane.

“You mean…? That?! Yeah, I remember it. So what of it, Sasuke? That was three years ago!”

Sakura’s breathing was becoming heavier with every word, her intonation rising in pitch as anger began to cloud her mind once again.

“That was when I was still in love you! With you!! Not whatever you are now! Not what you have become!! You self-centered jerk!!! You don’t care about anyone but yourself! You..!”

Sakura gasped, her rant cut short as she felt Sasuke pull her into a tight embrace. Her first impulse was to push him away but, as if reading her mind, Sasuke’s grip tightened almost to the point of crushing the girl. Sakura gasped, having trouble breathing. She began to thrash in Sasuke’s arms when suddenly she felt him release her only to slip something around her neck. Something thin. Something that was now digging into the delicate skin of her throat, cutting off her air.

“I care about you, baby. Enough to put you out of this misery.”

As her arms flew up to try and get rid of whatever held her in a chokehold, the frantic woman looked up into her lover’s face only to find him grinning insanely down at her. The pressure on Sakura’s throat tightened even further. Her vision was becoming obscured by black dots, the pain in her neck becoming unbearable. Sakura tried to scream, but couldn’t.
Her limbs became shaky; her hands feel limply to her sides as her vision went completely black. Sakura’s hearing would be the last thing to go. As she felt herself slipping into the oblivion, Sakura heard a whisper ringing all too clearly in her dying brain.

“I love you.”

Sasuke watched the woman collapse in a heap onto the floor, her face blue, her lips puffy and bruised. The white throat he’d kissed so many times was now an ugly color of a bruise. But she was still so beautiful. The most beautiful woman he had ever seen. Sasuke just couldn’t let her go, he couldn’t…So that’s why. That’s why he had to do it. Absent-mindedly, he reached to rub the back of his head. He could feel the blood spreading slowly inside. There, below the surface. The strange bubbling noises in his ears told him the blood must be shooting in torrents, drowning his brain in deadly fluid. The internal bleeding would kill him within an hour, he knew. Sasuke had to smile at that. He knelt to stroke his dead lover’s pale cheek. Inadvertently, she had fulfilled their promise.

He was simply returning the favor. He was simply returning their love to life.
